I doubt I will get any positive feedback from this thread as most people have given up on England...and I dont really blame them. But seeing as this game represents both the UK and US players of eve (if you follow football/soccer) and it is our last competitive match (lol) of the season (trinidad and tobago doesn't rly count) its the last we are going to see of England. Im going to miss being disappointed that England got knocked out in the quarters but...meh. Anyways, on a positive note, England managed to pass the ball around nicely and we seem to have got a good solid and stable team now, maybe we might reach semi's or something in the World Cup. The yanks didn't really count as an opponent, they were poor, but we usually do quite badly in friendlies against lesser teams so..
What are your thoughts

USA got beat in a sport we don't care about. Big deal. Not one news outlet here is going to report on the matter.
Now, if this had been a sport we actually care about, like say American Football, the sport with all the pads and the brown oblong shaped ball with the white laces, we'd be rioting. --- My cat Putter approves of this post. I didn't realize we (US) had a soccer team, guess you learn something new every day. It's just never been that big in the states....women's basketball, NASCAR, professional wrestling and even golf each have more viewers than soccer here.

Well football is better then American football, at least the game does not have a commercial break every 30 seconds in order for you to keep your concentration or to give the players a break after 30 seconds of "tough contact sport"

I don't know who you're talking to, but not really. I think there was a couple weeks when we went "interesting our team aren't doing half bad". Then we forgot about it again. _______________

Meh the people I have spoken have been quite young around 16-20, maybe its something for the future. Im pretty confident it will catch on, theres a hell of a lot of money being put into it over there. Lets not start this into a omg american sports suck thread cos of advertising and then later a rugby > american football thread. It was mainly for english people to read, just if there was a few of the american contingent that followed it they could jump in.

I'm 21. Anyways there was a couple weeks when a small part of the US took notice, probebly only a couple %, because the team did pretty well. In the end though it was really nothing lasting. Most of us have forgotten about it again. _______________

It is catching on a little more but very very slowly. To give an example, 2007 was the first year MLS (Major Leauge Soccer) sold network rights, up until then they had paid to have their games broadcast. The thing is that there is no feeder for it....a lot of kids play in grade school and maybe even a few in high school, but by the time college hits it has about the same draw as underwater basket weaving. So very few folks get interested in a game they aren't familiar with and the best talent is going to move towards football, basketball and baseball not soccer. I know Fox has a soccer channel and i think ESPN too, but I'm pretty sure there has never been a soccer game on any of the national tv networks.

As an american living in England things like this always make me chuckle. You beat us well done, that doesn't stop your team sucking balls. And seriously, this is like your national sport, you claim credit for inventing the game, and still you brag about your world cup victory that was over 40 years ago.
Every four years the english football fans are convinced they will win the world cup, and every time they suffer humiliating defeat.
To be honest despite all this America's football team has been steadily improving, we got pretty unlucky in the last two world cups. We'd have made the semi's in 2002 if it weren't for the German's little handball offence that went completely unnoticed. We suffered a similar offence in the first round of 2006. We go pretty unlucky there aswell, and what seems to go unnoticed is we scored a draw with the eventual winners.
So ye if you wanna diss our team/country I suggest you:
A) look at how crap your own team is first
B) look at the bigger picture and not just one of our games. - Violence isn't the answer, it is the question. The answer is yes. |

Well, I was vaguely aware there was a U.S. national team. I remember a few years back when the women's team won something or other, and there would certainly be a men's team to compliment them. I didn't know they were competing in some kind of international contest, but now that you have informed me, I am sad that we lost. Damn.
TBH though, the last time I saw anyone over 11 playing soccer was... well... never.

The Day the US as a whole cares about world football is the day the world accepts and embraces American football as the one true sport that should have the name Football. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

I do have to agree that it's not really that big a deal because most Americans don't really care for football - Europe's football I mean, not talking about our sad sport...
As a result of the fact - we don't have the best team, in fact - would it go as far to say we may even have one of the worst teams?
But as an attempt to troll - don't really care This is something that could only possibly bother the flag-humpers who will not tolerate anything less than positive that is said about their country; wither it be completely justified and right, or not. ____________________

I suggest you re-read it yourself. You claim England have a good solid team now, while slandering other country's sides.
As for me being a noob I'm not sure how that is relevant to an out of pod discussion.
