Edited by: Larkonis Trassler on 29/05/2008 14:02:29 Earlier, just after DT I tried to ransom a CNR, the pilot was 14 days old. It seems he had run afoul of a gatecamp a few systems further up the pipe as well. He logged off. I waited until the last safe moment for him to log back on again and proceded to gank it. I sat and waited for his egg and ransomed it. I then asked him WTF a 14 day old character was doing in a CNR. 'It was a gift from some friends' What the hell? What are people doing? I see it more and more, older players bestowing gifts on newer players, either large sums of ISK or expensive ships. Give a noob a billion isk and he will probably go and buy the biggest most expensive ship he can and lose it within 24 hours. Give a noob 10 mil isk and some advice and he will be in a much better position and not make those expensive mistakes early on which will make him quit. I've given 500K Isk to noobs I've seen in asteroid fields.
But a CNR?? Even 10M is extravagant. I had a great time flying frigates, ratting in high-sec, and learning the game.
Hell, I've got an alt that I can pose as a noob, just tell me where the free Ravens or 10M Isk is and I'll hang around there like a Calcutta beggar.

There's a slightly different version of this adage that I think is a little more suitable to the world of Eve:
Give a man a fire, and he will be warm for a night. Light a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.
OP: Nobody gave him a CNR, he bought it with GTC. He is obviously not dumb enough to tell you that after you destroyed it for him.
Keep up the good work though :)

I don't believe this story. A 14 days old newb simply doesn't have the skills to pilot a cnr, nor use bs-sized modules. Should have written of a 2 months old newb to make the story more credible.

As a 14 day old newb, an experienced player gave me 20M.
I spent it on the shiniest, fanciest ships/mods I could. I lost them in hours.
I then worked like a son-of-a-gun mining for weeks to build up the 20M, which I gave back too the player that gave it to me (by choice).
Both the blowing of the initial investment, and the repayment pay dividends. I can't thank that player enough for the two valuable lessons I learned.

Edited by: Amastat on 29/05/2008 15:24:14 If someone blows that kinda money giving billions to a absolute noob and idiot, it's their loss not yours, or mine.
I can see how giving large amounts of ISK, to a good friend or something, is a great way to jump-start things for them - so they don't have to go through the 1-3 months of the dark ages most of us go through when we start off. Personally I like to build on myself, not take money from others - however if I had someone like that around when I was new, I would of probably taken advice to invest it into blueprints or something, or kind of stockpile of items I could trade for a huge return several months later when I am more experienced.
I'm not really much a indy, I have super minimal manufacturing skills, I research more than anything - and BPO's are the kind of things you want to hold on forever and reap their rewards. If I was new and I was given a few billion to spend on stuff, I probably would of bought several BC or Battleship BPO's and eventually saved up a POS and research/copy them.
That much money I would never give to someone brand new - I would maybe give that kind of money to someone I know really well from outside the game, and I gave them a rundown, been mentoring them, and I know they have some form of a brain.
A noob I meet in game, though they seem to have a good head on their shoulders, I wouldn't give that much money still - but I'd maybe give them up to 100m at the most. Only because I trust their judgement and they would really benefit from it, and/or they would be a great help and repay me in the future for it. This is a good way to make life-long allies to depend on as well.
As for a complete noob and absolute moron, never in a million years. Some people like this will eventually beg, I've had a few people like that in the past trying to mooch off me. They usually ended up on my ignore list and/or I blew them up to make my stance very clear to them.
Great thing about EVE is that unlike most MMORGPS, WoW in particular, u can blow a beggars f*cking brains out. |

All I can say to that is: learning is fun!
I personally agree with you that it's pointless to simply throw large heaps of ISK at a newer player... it would be far wiser to give them a crash course in frig combat or something and let them earn their own ISK... otherwise they'll always be dependent on others for their income or otherwise will lose interest in EVE as soon as they have to start organizing their own income.
On the other hand if you do give a noob a CNR then he'll simply be ganked and laughed at which may also prompt the newbie to turn on his brain (or quit the game). Both is good.
Actually come to think of it I think I like the idea of noobs making their first PvP experiences in a faction BS... as long as I wasn't the person paying for it.

Know the feeling - even though back then we were absolute nubs; it's always the most awe-inspiring when you first start.
My first love was the Cormorant I believe - lol - eventually the Ferox was my new prize ship. This was a longgg time ago during RMR though... way before tier 2 battlecruisers. This was during the period of time when there was the golden omber rush; Isogen was like 100isk/pu or more at the time. ____________________

5) A fool and his money CNR are soon parted
4) A journey of a thousand miles jumps begins with a single step {that's lowsec. sure you want to go there?} click

Guys don't give isk to newbs, not even 1 mil. You think you do something good to them, but in fact you destroy their fun to get the first isk themselves.
I still remember the first day i entered eve few years ago, i was hunting small rats in a training complex (as part of the tutorial) and wham, there was a 20k isk warp disruptor in the loot. That was like a jackpot, half the isk for a frigate. Then killing rats in a 0.8 system, was quite challenging in an ibis but it was awsome to get the first isk and to earn the first frigate, which then allowed me to hunt 0.7 or even 0.6 systems, killing guristas in belts to make isk for skillbooks and some better modules for my frigate. That was an exciting time, glad noone ruined it by donating millions of isk. Making the first millions was much more fun than making the first billions. Don't spoil that fun for newbs, let them enjoy that part of the game.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.
Build a man a fire and he's warm for a day. Set the a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.

Teach a man to play a game and he will be happy, teach a man how to use a creditcard and people like asfgh and ghghkda will become his best friends.
Teach a man how to use the internet and he will get caught chatting up minors in a chatroom by the police. Teach a man to use a forum and he will spam it with nonsense like you lot going totally off topic.

I'd love to see that skill training sequence.
Would really like an answer to this question.
Get ready to be disappointed. :)

I gave this to the last newbie I helped: - Advice, lots of it. - a destroyer setup for salvaging, and a basic t1 cruiser for ratting. - I made him follow me in a few lv4 missions, so he could get salvage/get half the money and stnadings, and access a good lv2 agent. - I told him to use the money won by buying some +3 implants.
Anything more would have not helped him, rather the contrary. ------------------------------------------

Edited by: Quelque Chose on 30/05/2008 13:28:49 Somebody gave me the standard issue 10 mil cute li'l newbie bonus and I used it to run NPC buy orders. This pretty much kept me in gear while the mining corp I'd joined tried to figure out what the hell the payscale was; I managed to negotiate a pretty sweet deal on that one too. ___________________________________________

I don't have a spare character slot, but it would go something like this:
1. Minmatar Brutor, slave child, industry, engineer. 3 points in per, 2 points in will. 2. ~14 minutes to +3 implants across the board. 3. Approximately 1 day to learing/spacial awareness/iron will IV and clarity/spacial awareness III
From here it's ~1 day to caldari frigate IV, 5 days to caldari cruiser IV. There you go, 7-8 days to get into a CNR battleship. Useful torp skills are another 3 days, leaving you 3 days to round out fitting skills, electronics, weapons upgrades and navigation from an already useful engineer starting point.
