Now networks are not my thing, in fact i hate them with a passion.
I am currently using a bt home hub, for the second day in a row the wireless has completely cut out, it appears sometimes but wont connect and most of the time it is completely non existent.
Atm i am connected using a very long Ethernet cable i discovered, and as you can see the internet connection itself is definitely not the problem, or else i could not be talking to you..
Now since im not a network boffin of any kind, would it be possible to replace the home hub with another router, bought from say (god forbid) PC World for example?
I have absoloutely no idea about this sort of thing past opening ports and such!
Currently Bt home hub is connected straight into the phone line and all computers connect wirelessly to the hub.

You should have no problem whatsoever replacing it so long as you know your username and password. BT sent me a Voyager and a Home Hub, I only used them to make sure the connection was active and then replaced them with my own, no problem.

what username and password do you refer to? the one for the hub or the BTone (i know the one for the hub but my dad probably knows the the bt one, or he should do at least)
So i can replace it with any router? or does it have to be a specific type, im happy to be sure.. but i really am in the dark about the entire thing...

Well, normally there is a username and password which you enter into the modem for it to access the network, they will not have been chosen by you, it'll be some gobbledy**** like [email protected] for your username and your password is probably just as fun. There will also be an "admin" password required by the Homehub to access it's setup pages but generally this is blank or "admin : admin" by default.
The details you need will have been sent to you in a letter from BT a few days before the hardware arrived.
Also, the homehub is a combined Modem & Router so if you replace it you'll need to buy another combined one OR A seperate modem & Router, I'd recommend a combined unit for simplicity's sake. It'll be obvious once you're looking at some. (Assuming you've got a regular ADSL line and not some weirdo Cable setup? )

Well i looked on the bt home hub, and under password it just says not configured.. the user name does seem to be bthomehub in a few interesting combinations though like you say.
It just told me that my password to access the home hub had changed, and that it also changed all the passwords to everything to that aswell, which i have.. so i am hoping thats the case. im Probably going to go ahead and buy a new router now then..
Any suggestions as to a good one.. one that wont drop out every couple of days.

I get the feeling that the details you've been looking at were not your account username and password but the homehub's OWN username and password to allow access to it's setup, you'll really need to check the mail they sent you to be sure or call them and ask for your details.
As for suggestions... I dare not give any for fear of being set upon by a flock of angry nerds for recommending something other than a "g" class network and my knowledge of g these days is a little out of date. i'm sure someone will come along with some good suggestions though.

No worries i found the letter with the given user name and password on it from when they sent us all the rubbish, ive copied all the homehub details and such down as well just in case though.
Thanks for your help, hopefully get this sorted tonight and save myself more grief in days to come.
lets hope i do get some suggestions.

pretty sure the BT ones they send you don't require user/pass, since they connect to a default one. (I used to connect as 'voyager205user' or something) Don't know if you're able to use that on diff routers...
seems a bit expensive from Argos, even for Netgear (who are reknowned for charging wayyyyyyy too much for their stuff), but it's not my money...
ADSL one might be cheaper here btw ...

Ahh, maybe then. My account needs the correct username and password to connect but maybe the regular broadband service doesn't need it.

They did supply a username and password for the service, and i now have the new router up and running.

Just had another wireless dropout! Using the new router, and since the hub is completely gone and could not possibly be causing the problem, it must be interference of some kind, given that 3 different computers all have the same problem.. and an xbox and wii.. and the computers are using 2 different wireless cards.
Alas through my insistence on some sort of interference (not sure if thats even realistic) my dad turns off the wireless speaker system in the back room, and the network comes back up! Interesting thought occurs..
Could our wireless speaker system be causing all the problems? or it just pure fluke that it worked this time?

Microwaves, Mobile Phones, Cordless phones, Radios, Speakers, Televisions, Walls, Rain, Sunshine and almost anything else you can think of can cause your wireless to fail.
Try to minimize the interference by making sure nothing that transmits is near to the router itself and also try using WEP/WPA key encryption if you aren't already (I know, you wouldn't think it but I've known this to help solve dropping issues)
It's a damn shame we didn't know it was something else first off, could have saved you the cost of a router and the trouble of setting it up.. I hope we can figure this one out for you.

Ive been using WEP all the time, wouldn't do without it tbh.
I wouldn't worry about the money spent on the new router, homehub wasn't exactly a fast piece of kit, and it was a ***** to try and do anything with.
Im tempted to turn the wireless speakers back on to see if it drops out again, might annoy the other people in my house though . The router was sitting next to the main home phone, which obviously transmits to the wireless receivers around the house.. and that has been moved now.. hopefully its sorted.
Do you think fixing the router to one wireless channel rather than having it on automatic might help? just an idea.
EDIT: The reason i decided to try and fix it today mind you was that rather than having it just drop out and then come back up, or require a restart as it had done previously, it stayed down for a good 5 hours.. and it was only the wireless, just the pieces still don't fit in my head about it.

Hmm... as for channels I leave mine on auto but I think 1, 6 or 11 are generally the best? I think that's what I've heard. You could try those.

shouldnt this be quite easy to test? just try it a few times, maybe with the router close to the speaker systems, to augment the potential effect.

Its convincing the other 3 internet users in the house that a potential dropout is worht testing for now that is working again.

Diagnostic discussion time, kk few of questions
1) Does the wireless drop out still occur even if you park the wireless device right next to the wireless transmitter.
2) Does the wireless transmitter have an external aerial
3) Have there been any changes in the local electronic environment in the past couple of days, new devices etc.
4) Any other wireless networks in the area ------------------------------------------ Sig removed as it lacks EVE-related content. Mail [email protected] if you have questions. -Hango

There's no "best" channel. It all depends on how many other wireless routers you have around you. If you all share the same channel there is a good chance of interference. Chose a channel that's not in use. Download Networkstumbler - this will let you scan for wireless networks in your area and tell you on which channels they're running.

True but I believe those are the least commonly used by other devices
