Edited by: Xparky on 31/05/2008 00:12:52 CCP get John on the payroll, along with 2 guys to make a movie making team. Also throw in TonyG, give'em access to the ambulation models and make a series about FW.
Would make for a great marketing opportunity imo.

If you've already downloaded the movie from eve files or other mirrors you can still help with seeding by opening this torrent and choosing to save the vid at the same location on your disk you already have it at. Seeding will then start immediately.

Most clients can't simultaneously download from multiple torrents. I'll seed both for the time being, but I'd prefer one of us remove our link so we're all on the same torrent.

A potential gold mine for CCP and a smart producer. I would certainly buy EVE - the Series, where we are presented with different aspects of what it is like to live in New Eden, just think about all the Chronicles we have, each one can be a self contained episode.

The OP has openly admitted he has no professional experience whatsoever film-making. It's not a professional project, he wasn't getting paid, he was working (for the most part) solo and the whole thing is completely experimental.
What the hell did you expect?... Yes, it has flaws. Yes, the editing is a bit dirty, he didn't use AA and the voice actors lack the enthusiasm you'd expect - That dosen't stop it being enjoyable.
Actually it's originally by "Tomiko Yoshida" not Apoctasy ....

Everyone grab your nearest locator agent and repeatedly pod this guy.
Or you could try to rebut his points, right?
Clear Skies is AFAIK the first EVE machinama and in that respect it's amazing. It's also a groundbreaking technical feat to combine the HL2 and EVE engines so seamlessly. However, it is not perfect, nor is it the first machinima. There are hundreds of other Machinima out there, some much better, some much worse than Clear Skies. The way some of you talk you sound like a bunch of fundamentalists defending the bible.
Defending the bible ? Hmmm... I think we got a new target !
Originally by: Janus Duo
Aside from Tomiko's comment about wanting the time he spent watching back (I wouldn't go anywhere near that far) the technical skill apparent in this production is much greater than the artistic skill. That's not to say it's not a passable production especially when considered it's amateur work. Still there are lots of great amateur films and machinimas, there are amateur conventions that feature amazing work. Thus claiming that it's to be classed as perfection despite its failings because it isn't professional isn't a valid argument. Ad hominem attacks on those trying to provide constructive criticism (eg well lets see you do better) also prove nothing about the original work. The critic might not have done better personally, but I have seen better amateur machinama than this.
It's a start for an eve online machinima contest. So far, it's the best Perfect ? No, I agree. But saying "I want my 40 minutes back" deserves some rude comments.
Originally by: Janus Duo
I used to play a certain console game 4-5 years ago. In the community very few videos existed and few players owned video capture cards or had the technical knowledge to make a film. I bought a capture card, filmed a few games, then clumsily pieced clips together using default Windows Move Maker templates with poorly synched and timed music in the background. It was awful. My first ever editing job and it was terrible. I didn't realize exactly how much so at the time, but pulling it up...yeah. Bad. But I was praised up and down for it. Why? Because nobody had seen something like that in the community before. Later on when better montages came along people finally admitted to themselves how bad it really was. Now however I have learned much more about video editing and can produce a much better video. I learned from the experience instead of stubbornly refusing to see my mistakes.
It's one of the first! Praising all around! If we all go "the montage and cutting sucked, voices sucked, hire actors, you wasted your time, etc", even though the producer says it's his first try, the next guy would give up even before starting, seeing how high expectations are. So people cheer a lot, because it's new and never done before and also to encourage future similar productions.
Originally by: Janus Duo
I'd like to address the creators directly and say that you've certainly created something great here, but if you strive to learn and improve the next could be brilliant and the one after that amazing.
Pretty useless advice, since they probably know it already, being their first video, having no experience, etc. But it's a start, and there's no need for these kind of comments. It's human nature to improve on its own, and doing 'better' next time!
Bottom line: screw you, "i want my 40 minutes back" people, and to the producer and his crew, good work, move on to next episode!

Extreme positions eh? "I want those 40 minutes back" ... isn't that an extreme position ? And yet you went to defend the troll. Quote: [...]it was lazily edited, poorly written and the acting was even worse.
[...]the technical aspects were nicely done, but this doesn't make up for the cast being wooden, uncharismatic and obviously better suited to being behind the 'camera' than in front of it.
The producer should, if serious about the project, get in other people to write the script and act in it so that he can focus on producing.
8.9/10 for effort.
Cast being wooden ? They're computer generated for ****'s sake! Uncharismatic ? What did you expect ? Bruce Willis ? They're COMPUTER GENERATED people!
Or maybe he means the dialogue. I personally found it extremely funny, nice accents and pretty well synced with the character's graphic models.
The story-line ... yes, maybe the "get a contract that turns out it's a trap" idea is a bit overused in movies...
Quote: 8.9/10 for effort.
That's like saying
I'll give you 8.9 on that essay. You have proper structure, introduction content and conclusion, you can use words, phrases and proper punctuation so I'll give you 8.9 for that. Though the content, motifs and line of thought are crap. 8.9 for typing! feel good!

What is the exact size in bytes of the video on your disk ? It should be 476,008,510 bytes.
To check its integrity download Microsoft's FCIV utility (File Checksum Integrity Verifier - small file) --- download.microsoft.com
After you install it go to its folder and run FCIV clear_skies.wmv It should report 1c83572ab1614cdc932810c3966b6603 clear_skies.wmv
If it's anything different then your movie is corrupted. Redownload from the torrent or eve-kill.net (mirrors list)
edit: FCIV installation instructions : support.microsoft.com
Also, it would help if you remember which mirror you used, since we may have a fake/saboteur mirror

The only problem is that the MKV torrent has only 12 seeds and I couldn't find a direct download link...
I've reconsidered your request for automatic rescues from prerecorded messages begging for help, since you've helped me troubleshoot VLC's problems with the subs. Only problem is I'm a forum alt, but have no fear, if you find yourself surrounded by trolls I will be there with the most cutting remarks!

And the ability to invite others to our ships, hold them hostage for ransom. Also allow to suicide oneself, so if they don't pay ransom they can suicide at risk of losing the skill points learned since they left the pod (so suicidees who ambulated a lot lately would lose more).

Ask them what kind of coverage and from what sites/magazines/etc warrants a wikipedia article and then let's start pushing

We demand hot naked Gallente women and epic fleet battles !
Also, an ETA of the sequel would be nice. Month, day, exact hour and minutes if possible

Edited by: Xparky on 11/06/2008 18:19:53 Try the torrent then. One of the seeds is eve-files so it'll be like downloading from eve-files, but interruptions won't matter anymore.
edit: if you don't like bittorrent you can download wget and run :
wget.exe --tries=0 --continue --timeout=3 --waitretry=1 http://www.eve-kill.net/download/Clear_Skies.wmv
which will resume download automatically if interrupted. |
