Noooo!!! It's hockey!!
Max Talbot just tied the game with 33-ish seconds left. It's game 5, Detroit leads the series 3 to 1, a PIttsburgh loss tonight means Detroit takes the cup and nobody wants that :P Penguins gotta win the rest of the series and Talbot just extended the dream \/

20 MOOOOOORE minutes!! I'm a Flyers fan first and formost, but since Pittsburgh knocked them out, and they're another Pennsylvania team, they're my surrogate home team vs. Detroit.
Back in 1996 (I think it was '96) there was a Stanley Cup Finals game between my Flyers and the Detroit Red Wings that went for like 5 overtimes, didn't end until 3 am or later... it was epic. Detroit won. Hoping for a different outcome here \/

And OH MY GAAAAAAAAAWD Sergei Gonchar taking that fall in the 2nd, how much guts do you have to have to still be on the ice. MALONE, taking the puck to the face like that and coming right back - the Pens DESERVE THE CUP!!!!!!

EPIC game! I'm so glad hockey survived the lockout and has come back to this level of intensity again. I was really afraid there for the first few seasons after the Dark Times.

That was an epic game. Family tuned back in just in time to see the tying score with like 37 sec left on the clock, as the Detroit fans went from raucous to quiet as hell. Next 2 full OTs were insane, and that shot that ended it, sweet - what's more sweet?

For the record, I hope Detroit wins. All my friends are Detroit fans, and they are closest to Canada. Normally I'd cheer for the Leafs or Canucks, but they didn't make it. So *cringe* GO WINGS!! -------------------------------------------------- Everyone is born right handed, only the great over come it.

Dammit, I was working, as usual during the cup. I'm not much of a hockey fan, but some of my many cousins are from Pitt, and my dad's from York, so I gotta back the PA team. Though I usually prefer the East side's teams, except for football nowadays - the Eagles need serious help.

tbh I was totally cryin' with 3 minutes left in regulation. After Detroit went up 1, it was like the Pens were broken. I just kept thinking, "How can you give up with six minutes left...?" and then Talbot came through with heart and tenacity.
Damn right though, the whole overtime stretch was amazing. It's incredible how those guys could pull so deep from the well on both teams to maintain that level of intensity for soooo long. Everybody's pretty much got Pittsburgh written off at this point, but man! If you don't have a reason to root for Detroit already, it's hard not to get behind a dream like that.
And for anybody who isn't already a hockey fan - watch this game(s). The sport is being very well represented by the Stanley Cup finalists this year. See ya Thursday for Game Six o/

I agree on every point - and I remember that Primeau winner omg years ago! <3 Philly!!!
I hope and pray for a Game 7, whoever wins (though I would like to see the player touted for so long as the next Gretzky make it official with some more ice time and get his name on the cup... idk what the hell Coach Therien is thinking about with playing him so little and worrying too much about match-ups but I'm just a pubbie.. I'm probably wrong)

The biggest shock so far in this series for me has been Malkin. I mean what happened to this guy? He absolutely tore it up through the entire regular season, was doing really well through the first three rounds and now he seems like a liabilty most of the time he's on the ice. I can see nerves/exhaustion to an extent, but the guy has done nothing but turn the puck over and look lost most of the series. And, it's not like he's even being matched against Detroit's shutdown players.
IMO, if Pittsburgh wants to have a chance to take this series, or even get out of game 6, Malkin has to step it up big time. Crosby is a great player, but he and Hossa can't do it all.

I think two things have come out of this series for me.
The first an immense respect for the skill and work rate of the Red Wings, I know they perennially end up doing well in the regular season, now I understand why, the system they play fits them perfectly. It's simple but damn effective, it's built for consistency and the players buy into it, not only that but they have tremendous skill level in depth.
You can never have enough veteran but good defencemen.
The second is that realistically these days teams don't stay together but if the Penguins keep a core unit, maybe if they return to the Stanley Cup final they'll now know what it takes to win. You can't buy experience.
btw having just read this article I now have the perfect response to any "all athletes are selfish fools" arguments.
I've heard a fairly acceptable argument for Malkin - he's used to seasons finishing in April not June. He's probably tanked, plus Philly played him extremely hard - wonder how many injuries will be revealed after the series finale? Like Crosby's broken foot last year.

It will be very interesting to see how this plays out, obviously Malkin/Crosby will be in Pittsburgh for a while, but for sure Hossa is out, and I believe the Pens will have something like 14 unrestricted free agents when the season ends.

The Pens are operating $10-15 million under cap because they know they have to sign Fleury, Malkin, Staal etc to long term deals.
The more the cap goes up, more chance the Pens have of keeping the core together. Plus moving into the new building in a couple of years will help those finances too.
I don't think the Pens would have given up so much for Hossa without thinking they could sign him to a long-term deal. On the flip side is his demands would be roughly 50% of whatever they're keeping back for the younger guys.
Here's hoping for some creative accountancy.

I went to see a fight once and a hockey game broke out.
Long ago I recall a match between the Blackhawks and North Stars (long since defunct) get into a 15 minute bench fight before the game even started. Those were the days.
Since I care for neither team in this year's playoffs I have mostly given it a pass but seems I should pay attention (from other sports, particularly basketball as I am from Chicago, I really dislike Detroit so by default I'll cheer anyone who beats them).
