And this is what happens when you start name-calling.
The point is, we have to look around for a free lab slots because some people are renting up slots which they do not NEED and will not USE in a meaningful way. And then because we have no clue who has them, all we can do is ask in Local again and again.
Not all of us are willing to run 25 jumps or even just 5 jumps, with a valuable BPO in our hold especially when there are perfectly good labs that are sitting unused in the system we started in.
Now I've made my peace with this, because no matter what I'm out of here. But this needs fixing badly.
If people should be allowed to remarket lab slots, then they must advertise them, and this should be in the game interface so that a) it's easier for the buyer to find one at a price that suits them and b) nobody gets ripped off.
If people should not be allowed to remarket lab slots in any shape or form, then this must be enforced by the game. Jack up the rental so it's not so attractive. Allow players to collaborate (work in the same slot) so legitimate research gets done faster. Set maximum levels to which research can be done, and a maximum to the number of copies of a blueprint that can be floating around. This means that in order to tie up a lab you must be doing legitimate research on blueprints. If you have the money to shell out and buy lots of BPOs just to keep labs tied up, then you're not going to want to hold on to too many labs. This of course is just a small selection of possible solutions and no one in particular will do the job itself.

Why not simply raise the prices of the lab slots? after all, this actually worked for the factory slots, coupled with the changes to force unrenting if the lab/factory wasn't used in the rental period.
I'm not saying it's the perfect solution, but as a first step to finding a better solution it could be worse. Simply raise the prices of the lab slots to be more in line with factory slots, as at 1000 isk per rental period (compared to 60-80k for factories) they are far, far too cheap, and see if further tweaking is required.

Raising the price of labs does not guarantee that they won't continue to be abused. Someone commented that the increased price would simply be dumped onto buyers. So you have to come up with a way to combat the abuse as well as make sure that the true value of these facilities is reflected.

I am very ticked off person since the last updated i have lost all four of the research slots i did have. Only to search the empire to try to find a new one or wait for someone else to loose theirs. But yet again something is wrong with the research, i place a item to research to (me 20) to be ejected at (me 15) and lost the only slot i had. Something needs to be done to fix this problem CCP wants to create more BPS for the users of the game yet we are pretty much !@#% out of luck unless we have been in the game since the beginning and wait patiently for the research to be finished as if we had no RL. Not even 3 hours past completion was i robbed of the only slot i had. Now forced to go to the trade to spend excessive amounts of isk to research or pay someone for a copy .. HOw fair is that

Are all these labs that are lost due to long time durations on research jobs? The simple solution in that case seems to be don't put in a research job that last a week. If everyone uses these labs as frequently as they would like people to think I don't see why it would be a problem to only put in jobs that last a day or two. It seems to be known that if you put a research job in that lasts longer than the rental period you stand to lose that BP. I would stop doing that personally. But that's just me.

Don't think it can be entirely due to that, i've been researching frigates to me10, which with my meager skills is well over a week, and nothing weird has happened yet (crosses fingers and touches wood).

If that's not it I guess that's a good thing...but there has to be something in common with all of the lost BPs. This is a computer system so I don't see how it could be random. Something has to be keeping the flag from being switched to used=1 or whatever the heck they use in the code. Computers do exactly what they are told. We need to find out what is happening to cause it to be told the wrong thing.

This probably isn't a contributing factor but have you noticed that while skill training keeps right on going through downtime, labs and factories cease all activity? Of course, why then would you get a lab unrenting in downtime? It shouldn't be possible.
