I know this is a noob question but I have spent most my time so far either doing pvp in 0.0 or running missions in empire so this is all new to me. In low-sec space what range do sentry guns fire at. I just found out that it's more than 75km the hard way so thought Id ask here.
Also, is the Manticore stealth bomber any good for piracy?

Manticore can kill cruisers in 2 or 3 salvos but the best thing going for the stealth bombers is being at range, and when your 100KM out you cannot tackle. I can see it working for frigates though. As for sentry gun range, 150KM IIRC.

150k, now that sucks. I know that I can kill a ceptor in one salvo as earlier I took out a Raptor interceptor. As for lowsec gate kills I think 150k range is too much as it would take forever for my missiles to hit the target, they would probaby be long gone before I even reach them.

The stealth bomber just isn't much of a solo ship imo... no tank, so the standard setup is a bunch of sensor damps to kill a target's targeting range. Have a friend to tackle, though, and it can shine.

I gotta agree. Bring someone to hold them down or bring a bunch more and the SB is great. I wouldn't much bother taking them out solo, though. Better off with an interceptor or even some t1 frigs. |

Carebear whineage about sentry guns got them buffed to the point where you cant really get away with using a stealthbomber on gates.
Youll need a friend or two in tacklers to assist.
OFC then the same carebears will whine about being blobbed and why cant you 1v1 like a real man

Manti isnt an awesome choice for piracy if you want to make money doing it, theyre a bit expensive to fit up well and a bit fragile for the work. it should be noted that the sentry guns respond to aggression within 150km of the object theyre gaurding, if your right next to the gun, but 151 km from the gate, it wont shoot, i dont know that caldari is gonna put quick damage down with anything short of a rokh at that range,

If you look at the related kills, the Claw I popped afterward warped in to the belt and started burning hard for my mate in his Purifier, so I told him to warp out and come back. As you know how slow SB's move, you'll understand how long it took him to get out of the belt and back and re-engage. During that time, my Hail S was burning through that Harb's shiny gold paint job like so much butter.
Then, having seen what directiont he Claw warped off to, I warped to that planet and boom, landed right on top of him... Lesson: if you warp to a planet to try to escape death, warp to the planet at an odd distance, don't just WTZ.

Thanx for all the replies. Well I am on my own so I don't have anyone to help with tackling which is a bugger, the range is a big issue as allready said. I think it maybe time to look for some friends to tag along with as on my own I doubt ill be doing very well at this, especially with the lack of experience in piracy.
Just been looking at the Hawk assault ship, I might give that a try in belts or something.

Thats a nice kill, bet he wasn't too happy at loosing his BC to frigate class ships.

He aligned and loosed ecm drones toward the end of the fight, but with 3 frigs pointing you, that's a desperation move at best. <SCARY> is solid folks, though. We've gotten a couple of their ships, they've gotten a couple of ours - always good for a good fight :)

bombers suck for piracy tbh and anything that dies from one, expecially intercepters, fail at flying ~~~~~~ doin it for the stats

Although you won't get lucky with this that many times, engaging from that distance can have some interesting aspects:
when you know you will pop your target with one salvo, from 150+ km, fire one salvo and stop your launchers. Your target will see the red brackets as long as the launchers are active but once they shut off, the red brackets are gone. Your missiles will still be flying towards target though.
So if your target thinks... kay, he stopped firing and he stays there, he'll pop when the missiles hit.
Won't work a lot but some will be fooled.

Contrary to popular opinion having a couple of Stealth Bombers along with an inty/AF swarm works a charm for losec. Very nice for mission busting DPS support as well.
Solo is probably quite boring.

The issue is that it's rather risky if you try to do it within point range. Of course, I used to bait SBs (when I saw them) by sitting at 0 on gate and pretending to be AFK. Engaging a Rifter in <10km in one is naturally pure suicide.

This is a good example of how a SB can shine solo. Doing it's job as covert ops, then taking an opportunity with the passive targeter. Then again, it was SCA, so can't be too proud.
On the other hand, this is a grand example of just how fragile they are, however unfitted. Notice skunk's small guns....and it didn't take long

This is how SBs truly "shine" in 0.0. Which is the only place where they are of any real use.
