I'm just breaking into exploration and doing a little high-sec exploration until Cloaking is trained and I can explore in low-sec and 0.0. I've run into an issue though and I simply cannot find a site within a system. My multifreq picks 1-2 up, I position the proper quests on every planet and have at it. My scan time is 230 something seconds and I scanned for an entire hour. No hits.
How long have you waited until you actually got a hit and is one hour not long at all? __________________________________________________

Are you 100% certain that you have complete system coverage? If not then you may never find the site.

It's possible that you have horrible scan luck, or that your current skill levels for pinpointing, triangulation and such aren't sufficient to give you a decent discovery rate for the probes.
If the sites show up on the multispec, they're there somewhere.
It is, after all, possible to roll a dice a hundred times and never get a number above a two... just very unlikely.

Yep, not 5 mins after posting this I found it. Terrible scanning luck then as the poster above me pointed out. __________________________________________________

Another thing to point out, for future reference, is that someone else may have found the site and completed it while you are still scanning. It may be worth doing another multispec if you can't find it after a few hours.

It varies so widely that I can't even begin to describe 'average.'
For example: 4 days ago I found a Ladar site in a single scan of one Quest, then a single scan of a Sift. Took me about 10 min tops from the time I entered the system till I had the site nailed down.
That exact same system, again looking for Ladar Sites, has had a site which so far has caused me to burn up 9 Sift probes! I keep getting 1000km hits to the site. Between going back for more Sifts and searching for the site by burining in various directions from those 1000km hits, I've wasted the entire weekend looking for it.

It's not unheard of to scan for several hours without results. However, my scanning experience is limited to 0.0, so I don't know if it goes the same way in +sec.
If you do want to continue beating your head against the wall, though, perhaps it would make you feel better to know that the good plexes typically seem to take more time and effort to scan down.
Be sure to get Astrometric Triangulation and Signal Acquisition up to four at some point. They help quite a lot.

Yea scanning is tedious - get your scan time down to get more scans off, finding LADAR/RADAR Sites can take up to an hour easy easy easily! But the rewards in 0.0 are in the billions sometimes.

Edited by: White Ronin on 10/06/2008 21:01:54 Day 3. Using Radars. Found 3 complexes. Hierarchy and 2 Radience. 3 Grav sites. Bistot and something else I couldnt care less about. Pinpointed so they should despwn soon. Using radar based probes. About 16 hours in this system alone.
Still the radar site shows on multspec probe. Still I try.
Still it is a whisper in the void. A sound just out of hearing range. You know its there but where is there...?
AND I CANT LEAVE TILL I FIND THE DAMN THING!

At a 1000kms you sometimes will see the site objects show on overview for a brief second when coming out of warp. When I'm that close to a site, I'll start trying various warp-ins on the hit to see if I can get a direction to move back towards. --------------- This sig has been censored in fear of recieving the ban hammer... |

I once spent 6 hours scanning with quests before i gave up and logged off for a little bit to scream outside at innocent bystanders. Once id done that for about 10 mins i logged back on, layed out another set of quests at the same points and got the site in one which i found after another hour of sifts. It was a Ladar site that had maybe 6 gas cloud harvesters and nothing else but then the next day i got a radar site in about 20 mins that had two encryption books and a T2 ship maker thingy that i sold before the prices plunged for 450 mil iskies.
That was with 1.5 mil SP in exploration and id been doing system wide scans in between ladars.

Yeah, I'm at the point where it seems like my Radar probes work for basically everything but Radar sites. Two unknowns and a Grav site after about 2 hours, but the Radar site is still there!!
Of course, after I post this I'll find it on the next scan.
As with everything, skills make a major difference on how easily you find and how close you get to sites when scanning. Get you probing skills up to 4 and you may never need a Pursuit probes again (except for the really tasty sites!) |

If you're doing it a lot get yourself a sisters probe launcher, ~40mil, but cuts your scan time nicely! Also there are rigs to help. |
