Don't adjust, place sell or buy orders while well and truly hammered. I miss read and mistyped some buy orders for around 260K and put them up for about 2.6 million. Needless to say, I now have a hangar full of these items and would really appreciate sine electonic *****-shiped device to leap out of my monitors and throttle me about the head.
Consider this is a PSA. You are welcome.

true story...I did the same thing, and lost 60mil because of it

I made a typo when changing the price of a buy order (without being inebriated, even), so I ended up paying almost 200 million ISK for some stuff that was only worth around 20 million ISK, before the 5 minutes were up so I could correct the price.
After that, I've always double-checked the price before hitting the Return key.

One drunk and hazy night I managed to enter a quantity of 10 billion instead of 10 million and was narrowly saved only because I hadn't trained Margin Trading L5. One more level and I'd have lost a billion to taxes....

Wow. I just logged in to tell everyone this story form last night, only to find I had already typed it. I don't remember typing it, like, at all.
There really needs to be a sobriety meter accessory for EVE. After all was said and done, in just the five minutes it took me to correct my error, I had lost over 300 million.

As a new trader I'm glad this wasn't me or it would have ruined me.

Yeah, I'm still fine. It did evaporate a few days worth of profits for me, making me a bit upset. But this does give me a great idea for an IPO:
Phase One: You give me many billions of isk. Phase Two: I buy many billions of isk worth of 200mm AutoCannon I's at 1,000,000 ISK per unit. Phase Three: ??? Phase Four: PROFIT!
I could seriously just kick myself in the head right now. :(

If you press tab, instead of return, when you have finished entering the new price the interface will engage digit grouping. Thus it'll change 1000000000 into 1,000,000,000.00 and help you avoid such mistakes.
To Shar -verb: 1 - To say what you mean. 2 - To say what it means. 3 - To say something mean. |

First off, thanks for this tip. I now no longer have to count my digits twice to make sure I'm putting up the right order.
But, my problem, after copious amounts of wracking my brain and going over my other orders was that I wanted to put a new buy order up for an item for around the 2.6 million mark, but my drunk ass instead right-clicked an existing order and changed the price. I have no idea why I did this.
Needless to say, in the five minutes it took for the timer to let me change the order back (or even cancel it) I ended up with over a hundred of them in my hangar. Happy birthday to someone!

you should actually go back through your logs, find out who sold to you and say exactly that. who knows, some of them might even feel sorry for you and return part of it :P

Nah, I'm writing this off as a valuable lesson learned. I can drink beer all day without any ill effects. I can even toss back a margarita or two and still be in good shape. But the second I get a bottle of Jack Daniels I lose all rationality.
Honestly, I consider myself lucky for not waking up in a foreign country married to a transvestite named Dolly.

Oh come on, just take a quick look at the right of your price box. If it's 5000% above regional average don't press OK. Never hurry.

Something still vivid in my mind, I once had the opportunity to rip off someone for 400m via a courier contract that I've accepted with an alt. The poor guy actually counted all the zeros including those after the dot (two more) when setting the collateral. Later he tried to convo me of course but to no avail. I'm not too sure but I think a 1000 words essay (all tears and stuff) might have made me laugh even better.

I knew that already, but thanks for posting it. It might be useful to some of the less experienced players.
However, my own typo was setting a Buy price to 90.8 ISK p/u instead of 9.08 p/u, and the tab key wouldn't have helped there. I used it all the time when I type in larger numbers, however.

So why did you ask? Wouldn't have been better to say: "Hey, I know if you press tab it'll fill in all the commas and decimals for me so I can at least see what a stupid price I'm typing in; aside from that, does it do anything else? Like generate a 50% profit passive income stream, make me coffee and get me dates with models? No? Well then screw that! Tab sucks! Ain't no friend of mine!"

Edited by: Tree Ox on 09/06/2008 02:48:51 this is going to seem silly to some of you, but I just lost another 100mil to a typo.
I'm sober, refreshed, sharp of mind. I'm ready to go.
So how did this happen? Lag.
My market and wallet windows lag all the time(is this just me?), but never this bad. My pricing textbox lag spiked as I was about to hit enter, the screen didn't update what I typed. As soon as I realized what was happening I tried to pull my finger away from the enter button so I can wait for the screen to update in order to double check, but it was too late. 200k p/u turned into 2mil p/u.
In a split second 100mil is all gone. Gah this is frustrating....

Which is why "tab" is your friend. It is just enough of a user created delay, slowing you down, that helps you avoid this kind of frustration. Of course posting this again and again only creates the opportunity to be trolled about it or for those who haven't learned to ignore good advice. You can only tell children that the stove is hot, just can't ever seem to get it through to them before getting burned.

Ironically, I was reading this thread right before it happened. And believe me, I was being extra careful. In fact, I even used the tab-tip(something I wasn't aware of btw, thanks!). But like I said, the price window was simply not updating at its normal speeds, and everything I typed was lagging behind by 0.5-1 second.
When adjusting dozens of buy orders in a roll, after first 10 or so I get into a groove where my fingers move on their own since it's the same motions over and over again. That's why I said I "tried" to pull my finger away, but it was too late.
Guess I'll be triple checking from now on, and finding ways to reduce lag in transparent windows.
EDIT: On a separate note, why do you get a warning window for placing a price that's more than 50% below average, but not when you place a price for something waaaay above average? O_o

Although I have alot of ISK, my wallet is always < 1bil.
This helps against such typo's of +bil. Although I never made them before... ----------------- Destiny is not a matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It's not a thing to be waited for - it is a thing to be achieved. |
