First Rifter, Hurray! Anyway, I'm new here but I managed to buy/fit out my first rifter. I have read many guides but the one thing I haven't seen answered is this.. what ammo should I use? The rifter is a beautiful Frigate, from the limited time I have flown in it, it's absolutely amazing. So, if anyone can help me select the right ammo, I'd be very greatful. If it helps I'm using 150mm Light Autocannons.

Depends on target. For mission running against Angels (Gist) use Fusion. Against Serpentis (Coreli) consider using Phased Plasma. Against rogue drones use EMP. You've got a lot of good options there... I prefer Fusion for all that nice Explosive damage.

Oh, okay. Cool. Thank you very much sir! What about pvp? Is there a good all rounder for that?

If there was your opponent would counter for it and it would no longer be good. Parrots, commence!

You got a point there. So in pvp just use whatever you fancy I guess then? Thank you very much.

If you go boom, you had the wrong ammo. If they go boom, you had the right one.
If you have the wrong one, get out! And hope the opponent wants to get out too...unless he notices he's got the upperhand.

I think fights are judged by many thinks before ammo and resistances kick in... So I would rephrase that: if you catch something and you cannot break his tank, then you might have the wrong ammo (it depends on the "something" - you might never break it with a rifter, no-matter the ammo).
@Tommy Reslin There are two main categories of ships: shield tankers, and armor tankers. Generally, Shields are weak vs. EM dmg, and armor is weak vs. Explosive dmg - that goes for all T1 ships. EMP projectile ammo does both, so its a nice "all-around" ammo for someone starting with the Rifter. Barrage T2 ammo gives you better range, but you need T2 small ACs to fire it. Well, of course i didn't mean that ammo is everything, but having the wrong ammo will make things go hairy quite fast. Having the wrong ship/target does that too. Heck, anything can make things go hairy :)

This.
Also, carry some Hail S. Mind you, the use of Hail S is very very situational.
Carrying some (RF if you fancy) EMP S and PP S is nice too for targets weak to them.
For instance: killing a Hawk, reload to RF EMP S. Killing any gallente frig? Barrage S and try to keep them from coming point-blank for as long as possible, or Hail S if you suspect he wants to be at 1km and you can't do anything about it. Vengeance? RF PP S, but unless it's a gimp fit you'll never break it. So on.

I suggest for your rifter something on the lines of this
3x Autocannons, 1x standard missile launcher
1x mwd, 1x warp scram, 1x web
2x OD I, 1x Nanohull I
this is a very cheap basic fit, about 500,000-650k isk investment and insured means you can have alot of fun testing pvp out It is better to light a candle, than to curse the darkness |

A lot of useful advice and I understood everything except the OD. What does Od mean? I don't quite know the terms. Anyway, there's a lot here that's very useful. Going to copy this down for future reference. Thank you everyone. :)

Edited by: Raul Endimion on 09/06/2008 09:39:28 Maybe Branko should post his fit(i cant remember it right now, but i know its plated+ab). Problem with nano fit is that even with barrage, u will have 8-9km falloff+optimal, so u will get webed.
Edit: OD is for overdrive injector, they increase ur ship speed, but reduce ur cargo ammount. And nano is nanofiber structure, it decrease ur mass so u get more speed from propulsion module(ab, mwd)

Also, a PvP Rifter setup for you:
3x 150mm AC II, 1x Rocket Launcher II
1MN AB II (or cold-gas), warp scrambler, patterned or better webber
SAR II / 200mm Tungsteen plate / Damage Control I (or II, if you want to double the price for 10% hull resist).
Works like a charm for general low-sec piracy. 400mm plate fits are possible and good too, just a bit less maneuverable.

Thank you very much. Once again, I appreciate everything. So how much does your setup cost? Not that it's a problem, I can always make more ISK. That's the best thing about this game. Earning ISK isn't so hard to come by which allows for you to do many fun things. :)

I try to make fits so I get the most bang for the buck, which is why there's a few bits of low-end named or T1 where it doesn't matter all that much (DC, scrambler) and solid named (web, I generally use X5). Frigates are disposable anyway, so no point in making them cost any more then they need to.
Roughly, it's 250K for Rifter, 650-700K for the guns+rocket launcher (if you don't have T2 rocket launcher, use OE-something, it's only 100K), 50-500K for the AB (cold gas vs T2, you're really fine with cold-gas most of the time), web/scram are 400K together (x5 web isn't free, but patterned is als o OK and drops price a bit), the SAR/200mm RT/DC I are maybe 400K. Loaded with max of 100K worth of ammo.
Basically, total is about 2.3M for the T2 AB version and <2M for the cold-gas AB version. Rather disposable, really, does solid DPS for a frigate and can take a bit of fire.

Really cool. Right now I don't have the skills to use most of that stuff but I'll be sure to work on it. Right now I have a simple setup that I got from guides.. I'm using x3 150mm Auto Cannons 1x Small Nosferatu 1x Warp Scrambler 1x 1mn afterburner 1x Stasis Webifier 1x 200mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten 1x Damage Control 1x Small armor repair
So far this is what I find that I can use with my current skills and was going to run this through the FW. Is this a decent setup? I also plan to make Rifter's with different variations like the ones mentioned above. Someday when I have the skills I'll try your build out but unfortunately I can't just yet. :)

My big guns rifter setup
Hi 3x200mm T2 autos 1xRocket launcher
med 1x1mn MWD 1x x5 web 1x7.5k point
low 1xsmall rep t2 1xdamage control I 1x100mm rt plates
I used to use a 200 mm plate with 150mms but wanted to increase the damage so i had to drop downgrade the plate. It loses some armour but gains some maneuverability and speed with the mwd

Er, what? Use a 200mm RT or get fitting skills. It's easy to fit 200mm ACs plus the 200mm RT plate.
I only use 150s because they're way cheaper, 200s on a Rifter are in fact superior, just not by a significant enough margin to warrant the extra mil and a bit. The Rifter is all about killing stuff on a budget anyway :)

Not with MWD - although, it might if you have AWU, would have to test it as I haven't been using a MWD Rifter in ages now (and the 150mm setup fits with MWD), I go for AB fits. However, don't downgrade the plate to get 4% of the total DPS output anyway.
My error for not spotting the MWD though. I just don't use it on low-sec Rifters.

Just don't.
(a) You will get webbed. You have a MWD. Running a MWD when webbed can be worse then running nothing at all - and running a AB in webrange is so much better. If you're not webbed, you don't even need any speed mods while webbing the target to speedtank him, unless it's something very fast.
(b) You will get webbed. Or you won't, but you'll be faced with something nano and faster then you (say, a PvP fit Stabber, and it's a fight you can absolutely win with my setup even though it's extremely iffy). If you cannot counterweb due to being a shield-tank, a battleship doesn't need any speed mods to bring the angular velocity to 0 rad/sec, since it will be faster then you. Then you die
(c) ODs and nanofibers are fine, but did I mention you'll get webbed without means to speedtank or counterweb?
Don't listen to people sprouting this sort of nonsense fits, I've killed tons of them in everything from another Rifter to a Hurricane with amazing ease.

Does anyone else here miss the days where you could fit a small nos and run a pretty decent armor tank? Now it's pretty pathetic........
However, you asked and I give you the gank rifter:
highs: 3x 150 autos
mids: 1 mwd 1 med shield extender 1 warp disrupter
lows: 1 gyro 1 OD 1 nanofiber
Enjoy!

Meh.
3x200mm AC II Rocket Launcher II
AB web scram
SAR II 200mm RT plate Gyrostab
Or:
150s+the above fit
MAPC 400mm RT Gyrostab (note: I'm not sure if the MAPC is avoidable with AWU and all that jazz. It might be.)

Edited by: Willy Eckerslike on 09/06/2008 14:13:18 My PvE fit:
3 x 200mm AC II with Barrage or Phased Plasma ammo Arbalest Missile/Rocket
Cold Gas AB Cap Recharger X5 Webber
SAR II Overdrive II Named Gyro
More than capable of handling all belt rat spawns in systems down to 0.1
My PvP tackle fit:
3 x 150mm AC II with Hail/EMP ammo NOS
MWD Web 7.5k Scram
SAR II Overdrive Gyro
Pulse the MWD, as required, once within range. For solo work I would go with the 200mm RT fit detailed above.
