Did you truely expect players would change the most basic rule of warfare (more = better), just because it had a "FW" label on it? ------------------------------------------

While generating lag is not the defining factor of a blob, a small skilled surgical strike team is not a blob by any definition of the word.

Not if the skill in of itself rests in the players hands rather than any material measurement, no. But if your "small surgical strike team" is a handful of tacklers, a couple heavily tanked cyno ships, and multiple carriers waiting to hotdrop on a force mostly composed of cruisers with a couple battleships and T2 hulls, it's most certainly still a blob, regardless of the numerical advantage the other side might possess.

We could bring 10 polyrigged nanohacs to a fight, with highly skilled pilots who know how to handle their ships, with expensive implants etc. But what use is that when there is a long delay activating your MWD or you cannot move around to manage your transversal, or don't even load the grid before you die.
If a dozen skilled pilots turn up, in nice ships, thats not a 'blob' by any reasonable definition of the word.

Im sorry but you would be wrong. In general, a blob does use lag to negate the advantages of superior pilots and/or ships (though not necessarily deliberatly so)

I'm sorry, but you would be wrong. While in general, the term "blob" in Eve is most easily associated with the lag large player gatherings generate, and it is indeed separate of the actual intentions of the group, a blob is determined by numerical superiority of any sort over your opponent that predetermines a battle.
Also, /hi5 me for derailing a thread and verbally dancing in circles around those of simplistic intentions and a simpler belief in the straightforward nature of those they feel the need to correct. It's 4 AM and I must to bed.

You're right about one thing, you do need a large hitpoint buffer if you're going to be shooting a blob at close range and have much less numbers than they do.
Or you'll just die before inflicting any losses. Which is of course pointless.
However calling a smaller number of high-HP vessels a blob isnt really fair or realistic. I can see where your logic is going, its just not how the blob mechanic is generally recognised in EVE.

Edited by: CRUSH BOSS on 11/06/2008 11:54:30 Edited by: CRUSH BOSS on 11/06/2008 11:53:29 Great day had by the Caldari indeed, 10+- ships our loss, 120+- thier loss. and plenty of frozen corpses to top it off.
For a fleet to work as well as it did with high skilled players down to low skilled players one would assume that once the FC (great job) stepped up to the plate and took control of this hord of players the results were quite clear.
Everyone shut up and did what they were told, end result was a smash frenzy that acted like a huge steam roller, the (fresh) PVP players drew strength from the leadership and gave amazing combat results.
I for one have played eve for over 4 years and will stand for the record; that FW was the most fun i have EVER had in eve, except for JIHADSWARM, that was fun, but on a different level.
All in all, a great day indeed; i was hell proud to fly with these guys, big or small, everyone did thier part (even if some of our more excited players decided to pwn on the Caldari NPCs) and that all from a single day of FW PVP, i look forward to what the future brings for our new Caldari pilots.
God dam it, if i was capable of it, i would shead a tear at the honor i felt.
Crush.

I'm so happy I was there, the first bit of organized Caldari factional warfaring... Joined for the first major combat op, stayed until right after we smashed that pirate fleet (though they got me to 60% structure... heart attacks r us :D).
I'm sure to sign up again tonight :D
Props to our scouts and of course also the FC who managed to herd the pvp nublets as well as the more experienced players!

good to see over 100 guys already in militia chat and 49 in gangs on first day for one faction alone. Lets hope those numbers stay steady and the fun continues.
See you in the Fed Militia soon.

Battle report for this fight ==================================
I'm cacye ( i can be seen scrambling sally in the first pic)
Cross posted from SHC. ----------------------------------message follows------------------------------
Ok, so when the cluster came up early last night, i raced back to Black Rise to check it out.
Black rise looked pretty empty, just a few neuts waiting for the action to start, so i headed to Jita, quit my corp and joined the militia. There was about 10 in the militia channel at this stage (about 15 mins after cluster came up)
Over the next hour the number rose to close to 400 and fleets started forming.
A pretty good FC named XXXXXXX (redacted) set up a gang, with Eve-voice being mandatory (and at least 90% used it.)
Gang was pretty in-experienced, obviously a few peeps with 0.0 experience, but actually lots of low-sec pirates who were more interested in popping everything that few past.
It was actually good to have pirates in the gang as they understood the flagging mechanics better than the 0.0 types.
So we formed up really slowly in nourivaiken. One nublet who didnt have evevoice on jumped in to the low sec, and then started typing "Help.need help" in fleet.
After leaving him for a few mins as punishment for not having voice on., we jumped in and ganked 2 neutral pirates (who were flagged to the whole gang now)
Last night was a bad night to be a low sec pirate. All that talk of pirates looking forward to FW for the increased number of targets seemed laughable as we popped them one at a time all night.
Anyway we headed in to deven and our scout (XXXXX redacted) spawned the control point. The control point in this system was unrestricted which meant no accel gate, but...
You can't warp around in the deadspace, "complex" rules apply, which was funny cause pirates sent a ibis scout, who we didn't pop (militia rules we don't kill caldari neuts), but a few minutes later his mates obviously tried to warp to him, and landed in the middle of our blob. We popped them.
The complex spawned 5 waves of npc's starting with 3 cruisers and escalating to 3 BS, 5 cruiser.
After 15 mins we had captured the point and we went to move on to fliet (next door)
The whole time we were in deven there was 2 war targets somewhere in system so we knew there would be hostile intel on us in their militia channel.
Our scout jumped in to fliet and yelled "dont jump" but it was 2 late by about 0.1 seconds as we'd all jumped.
So there was 40 of us, but about half in T1 frigs (thought we'd need them to capture L1 points) and the rest in cruisers, a few hacs and 1 bs.
There was about 30 of them and we got into a great fight, which i didn't see cause i lost my kessie and warped off.
FC called primary all the way to the end and we held the field with maybe 2/3 of our fleet still in ships.
I headed back to Jita in my pod and apparently the fleet went on to capture 2 more systems.
All in all an awesome night.
What worked well ==================== eve-voice. Seriously its ace. FW mechanics worked flawlessly. Lucky to have a good FC
What worked badly ==================== TS discipline was pirate standards half the fleet had no clue 1/4 of the fleet didnt enable eve-voice. There is no Caldari Faction KB to post kms to and battleclinics doesnt accept FW Kms yet.

Nice report there dude.
For the people there having a byzantine argument about the true definition of a blob:
The fleet had an average of 50 ships in same system at all times. Hardly a lag enducing number! even the biggest fights went really smoothly.
Several plexes were defended from gallente attacks and we scored several major plexes. It was also nice to see people playing smart and breaking up to take several plexes at the same time. That's what the CCP Devs were talking about in the live devblog.
I think it was great that from day one the caldari militia managed to organize this operation. If only the gallenteans were not busy suiciding against the Leviathan over Caldari Prime then maybe we could have run into serious competition.
The 30-something fleet we ran into fought well and held their ground but I guess we were better organized, hence the light losses. Too bad i missed the scuffle with the minmatars, had to go to work :)
Come on frenchies, get organized and bring it on! ____________________________________________ Start every day with a smile and get it over with |

So far there are about 3k pilots on each 'side' so both groups can bring equal sized fleets to the table.
That said, hope it doesn't just turn into big blobs on gates. The missions are supposed to help break things up, I think, but currently they are kind of le suq.

Yes we had a one hell of a nice roll there. I was in the fleet from start until i had to get a shuteye at about 9am EVE Time. Believe me, the fights where all fair and we did not engage non hostiles. Regarding the Gallente fleet, we completely obliterated that one a few times. At the end they withdraw for an extended time before reentering FW area of space. Unfortunately we did not catch as much of the Minmatar fleet as i would have liked, but still i think this proves once and for all that good tactics and teamwork is the key to any engagement. I would also like to thank the author of this post, who was a great part of our hunt, as he was an exellent forward observer. I would also like to extend my thanks to our Amarr brothers whom we fought together with. They made an exellent addition to the fleet, both in Minmatar space and Gallente. Last but not least id like to say exellent work to our FC Boromir for his good judgement and sound tactics, they where all keys to our success. |
