How about removing local chat as we know it? Their will still public chat channels but they will no longer function as an early detection system. My ideal is simple, remove local chat in non empire space. In it's place their will be a constellation or regional chat channel. You will know who is in your local constellation or region but never know exactly where they are. This simulates real life intelligence in the aspect that you know you're enemy is near but not exactly where.
This also serves other functions. Non empire space is usually pretty empty so having more people in the public chat can help lighten up the mood. This will be helpful to alliance members and other pilots. You also have the option to add people to a ôlocal listö such as gang members or corporations. If they accept to be in your local list they will always appear if the local channel if your both in the same system. This way the removal of local chat will in no way have any negative impact in helping to coordinate gang or corporation activities.
Empire will still have local chat since it's relatively safe in empire and it's so crowded. I think this helps answer many problems we have about ôstealthö and detection and mirrors real life in several ways. I think this solves many more problems then it will create and will only better the game. What do you good people have to say?
What are you going to do? I'm going to kill them all sir |

Local chat should certainly remain, but it shouldn't have a character list. . . names should only appear when people talk.
But on the same note. . . the map features that show pilots in space/docked/killed/podded, etc. should go away as well.

Ok, what about just removing pvp out of the game? I'm glad your idea wouldn't work because of the server architecture.

I have seen this notion pop up a couple of times. One of the suggestions I remember having been posted was "introducing some sort of "radio scrambler device" (mid-slot item or so) that could remove your name/icon from the local chat."
I kinda liked that idea |

Umm, this would help PVP. (Especially if map is changed as well) Without the early warning system that is local chat + Uber map, you could actually sneak up on someone. You could lay an ambush, and you could camp a gate without a big flashing sign saying "HERE I AM"
You could actually catch miners at a belt unaware. You could send a party into enemy territory without them knowing hours in advance. You would actually need to patrol borders to keep people out.
For a PVPer, you're pretty clueless as to how local chat/map makes it really simple to avoid PVP. ANYONE can avoid combat if they want to.
I like the idea of a constellation wide chat, instead of local. I also like the idea of restricting the map displays. Perhaps 1.0 - 0.5 would be like current map. 0.4-0.1 should show info only in your current region, and in 0.0 you can only see info for your constellation.

I just came from a system where people were talking yet not registering in Local, what would be the new feature?
Nerf the map to hell!
Display only what race the pilot is at first if and when talking, the language or dialect would give it away, scanning reveals what type of ship he's in and the name thereof, add that, further scanning may or may not reveal what corporation he represents.
Still more time and effort spent reveals who the actual pilot is, should he not choose to reveal this info himself upon spelling out his own name, he'd then be listed in Local for those being there upon him doing so...

Aitrus, some of your arguments are wrong. Having local chat removed would not help us to catch people, because nobody would fly through countless systems scanning the whole system all the time just to find a ship. Nerfing the map would probably help pvp, but I actually don't want to have it changed, somehow the map became a tool that not all people can use to their advantage.
And where the hell would all those kids smack talk then?

Good point about the smack talk. :D
I would intend these changes to happen AFTER the cover ops frigs come into play. would offset the changes a bit, and still allow tracking. If you're gate camping, this would be great. just set up at the gate coming into a region from another, and you are not seen on map until people are already at the gate with you. You have the upper hand there.
If it was done, there would eb alot more ships blown up in 0.0 space, and more than likely alot less Blob wars. Whats the point of a blob, if noone sees it but you?

Get rid of the local chat and the "pilots in space" feature on the map. Instead, create new skills and player-owned radar beacons/modules that take their place. Scanner and radar module that allows you to see number of pilots in adjacent systems, or give you a wider scan of pilots in a system, radar beacons that can be placed in various parts of a system, etc.

Edited by: Nuala Reece on 13/05/2004 12:35:17 Edited by: Nuala Reece on 13/05/2004 12:34:16 Don't the jump gates register each ship/pilot as they come through? Based on that it makes sense that the local channel and the map would be able to have ready details of each person in system, whether it's empire space or not.
Rather than getting rid of the local channel completely it would make more sense to have some kind of hacking/masking skill or module through which a pilot could hide the register of their ship using gates/stations. And through that hide their avatar on local chat.

I dont see how this idea relates to PvP?!
PvP have nothing to do with local chat, unless "Smack Talking" is some sort of PvP!!!

I support the map losing the fuction to scan 0.0 space.
Less comprehensive information in 0.0 whould reflect it being lawless space and so not actively scanned by CONCORD. So many ingame benifits to this

The benefits from geting ride of local and map could be that you would have more use of smaller ships for scouting and exploring. also it would make it harder to avoid a fight but in the same time harder to find your target. there would be a need for more people out in 0.0 space but it would also be easier for more players to move out to 0.0 without someone seeing them on the map and sending 10bs after them. and with pos you could actually have some us of radar or some kind of system that gives you a warning when someone enter the system. would be nice to atleast try a eve without a long range scanning system built in for everyone to use.

Wouldn't work because of server architecture? Well - why not? They have corp channels that work throughout eve. If they caused the 'Local' channel to become a 'region' or 'constellation' channel, what about the server design would stop it? I realize I'm just playing devils' advocate here, but you underestimate the power of the technology running this little micro-universe of ours.

I think what Xpohoc was saying was if you get rid of the map and get rid of local chat then people looking for pvp will spend a lot of time scanning empty systems in 0.0 looking for someone to fight.

Keep the local channel. Kill the number of pilots in space off the map.
That would solve almost all the gripes I have with the map/channels. Oh, let us look at the local region's market in space. It makes no sense to be able to see how many pilots are in space in a system 50 jumps away, but not be able to get some basic market information from the local system. ----------------------------------- A gun and a packet of sandwiches.

If local chat removed and regional or even constelational chat implamented.
Upside :
1. You can talk to everyone in the region. 2. You can see everyone in the region. 3. You can enter a system and search and find pilots before they know what hit them. 4. People wont know where you are when they look for you. 5. Your enemies can never feel secure when they see you in chat even if you are 10+ jumps away. 6. is there more and if so feel free to add.
Downside :
1. Everyone in the region sees what you write in local and you have to see what other people write as well wich can be annoying when talking to a group of people. 2. Everyone in the region knows if you are there. 3. You have to manually scan every single system in the region when looking for specific pilot/s. 4. much chatter causes lag, lag is bad. 5. You can never be secure when you see enemy pilots in chat even if they are 10+ jumps away. 6. Is there more and if so feel free to add.
In my opinion, I care not either way. Spawn of the Devil

I very much like the idea of radio silence. Imagine mininhg somewhere dangerous and having to focus-beam scan the nearby gate to keep an eye out for possible trouble arriving.
Local chat could be optional, i.e. people can see local chat but not have to appear in it (radio silence). Although this would mark you out as "up to no good" immediately.
To counter the increased difficulty of keeping tabs on local I would expect:
1. new deployable scanners (deployed at gates?) that could scan passing ships and relay the results (name/corp/type) to a seperate gui screen.
2. a larger more permanent deployable that would effectively show all local activity. (local list effectively).
3. Skills that increased the current scanner range of the scanner.
4. A general overhaul to make the scanner UI more clear and easier to sort/navigate.
You can expanmd this to remove the F10 map pilots in space option, again with skills and modules that allow you to see X jumps ahead. This would give rise to a whole new class (scout) of player with specialised skills and a very specific role. Additional deployables could also supply this information then viewed in the F10 map.
Alliances would then have early warning outposts (deployables) that would alert them to intruders without the current omnipresent 6 man ganksquad who can keep an eye on multiple regions at a time (which is pretty stupid imho). Such deployables would in themselves become strategic emplacements. (For god's sake CCP please implement this...l think l just did a sex wee)

Not sure if that is the best solution to the problem, nstuff- if only because in the current situation keeping local open is prudent: it is very useful to know who are in the same system as you (hey, if there's a way for me to know if Tank CEO is in the same system as me, I will only be too happy to use it, even if that way is illogical and annoying at times )
And, er, to be honest, I also find the notion of radio scramblers, tight beam transmissions and whatnot as purrty as you can get. Good excuse to bring More Gadgets in Eve too- Eve can never have too many gadgets, now can it? |

the map in its current state is useless anyway. dont believe me ? well try it. it registers pilots in space totally out of sync , what more do you want ?
remove local chat ? hell why not, while we are at it why not allow people to register as a pirate and stay cloaked while camping a gate ?
it is rediculously easy to camp a gate so why make it easier ? but wait, the very same person who started this thread will prolly come in here whining once he has been jumped by a gang of pirate hunters who he didnt see coming. in any case, most blockade runners woulr be pretty much unaffected anyways if there was no local and no map because as long as you dont pull us out of warp with a mobile warp disrupter we are almost uncatchable anyway. and so we should be.
