Hi there,
I am currently doing research on virtual environments, focused on MMORPG's, related to pursuing of goals. In the stage of exploration on the subject, I would really like to share some thoughts with you on the topic.
I would like to hear how you feel about Goal setting: What are your personal goals within EVE? (not why you play in general, but why you play the way you play; what do you strive for?) If you happen to be active in a corporation: how does the specific corporation of your choice attribute to your personal goals? Feel free to discuss each others answers, or my question in general. As this is an exploration, all thoughts are more than welcome.
Hope to hear from you! Thanks in advance! |

To help you out, the game Second Life is especially good for these kinds of questions. |

What is the reason for your research, is it academic, marketing, journalistic? Where/when/will the results be published?

@ Winterblink: it is academic research, focused on Digital Culture. Results will mainly be published internally. If it turns out the results can be interesting for EVE players, it might be published within the eve-community (but of course only if all participants personally agree. Characternames will not be included in this stage of exploration).
@ Slanty McGarglefist: thank you for your advice.

Edited by: Comrade Commizzar on 11/06/2008 15:39:59 My personal goals?.... To Serve the General Pilots of Eve!
1) By educating them about the true facts of their exploitation, servitude, and oppression under the Oligarchs that rule Eve through current feudalistic control of economic resources.
2) To enlighten them about their real function and position in Eve as "slaves" and "cannon-fodder", spending their game time and resources defending the assets of their Bourgoise Masters in zero space.
3) And hopefully, through the above, to spark the Revolution that will unify the peasants of Eve into a single hammer-wielding force to smash their real enemies... The Elite Oligarchs!
Forget FW! This is the REAL war being fought in Eve! FORWARD THE REVOLUTION!!

Goal setting: What are your personal goals within EVE?
My personal goals involve getting a stable, high-volume cash flow over time to be able to fund PvP, research, industry and my desire to fly every ship in New Eden.
Corporate: I am my own corp. The corp is set up as a sole-proprietor template, meaning everything I put in/take out is mine. It is essentially used to facilitate the above and maximize my profits.
I play the way I play to relax, nothing more. It's fun, exciting and a great stress-reliever. |

To the OP - this is the worst place to ask your question and get a honest and strait answer :P You may have to work this thread for a while before you have enough applicable data. ____________________

Goal Setting is something I take great pride in. However available goals are defined by the environment, and many are not obvious to a beginning player. For EvE my main goals are gaining skills to fly ever better and more interesting ships, to be able to fit those ships to their maximum potential. To have a collection of several ship types to play with under whatever circumstances I find myself in. Also as a byproduct I like gaining faction and seeking a balance to prevent negative faction with any of the empires, very tricky at times.
I tend to focus on combat (PvE, PvP), avoid mining and industry, and dabble a bit in manufacturing. I believe any successful MMO environment must build in a platform to develop whatever desires the paying public has, within the technological capabilities of the infrastructure. As a once close friend of mine was fond of saying " Go big, or not at all.. " |

I would like to hear how you feel about Goal setting: What are your personal goals within EVE?
My true goal is to encounrage and bring a deeper view on certain aspect of EVE. Being a Project Coordinator, the lead composer for my band(signed) and a huge adept to history, itÆs really interesting to see how humanity repeats itself on a much faster and smaller scale then real life. Any story you can read in a history book, you can relate it to EVE... it's crazy like that. Of course, I am talking about political wars, wars, stealth operations, monumemts....
IÆve been around with various characters since the beta and of course, IÆve seen a lot and done a lot. Making this new char (last year) was an extremely good experience as it allowed me to start from scratch with more knowledge. For a year, I simply played because I was playing, but since I joined this corp, I took on the role of educating and helping the newer members in our corp. It is quite a fun experience and it has become a goal to help and motivate my corp to keep pushing forward. WeÆre holding a small system in Low-Sec with a few POS and a fairly decent fleet that patrols every night. ItÆs always interesting to see how much effort has to be put in by each members in order to have a working corporation/Alliance. I am not the CEO, I am a freelancer that is devoted to help his people.
EVE doesnÆt take a lot of time since I only play a few hours here and there but itÆs enough for me to monitor the corp and put my time in various aspects without breaking my social life. However, 1 hour of playing equals 8 hours of pondering on certain situations and how I can bring the next bit of information in motion.
Compared to any other MMO, EVE has the strongest and most organised community. What you see in EVE is scary to be honestà ItÆs a direct simulation of how real life is, the only difference is how faster things evolve.
While I mostly specialize in PVP, I do enjoy Cosmo missions and suchà

The only goal I have to strive for is to be as multi-talented as possible, and thus have as many options as many options as possibe available instead of following the typical "class" option that you see in the plethora of MMOs out there.
That said, I am not after the "jack-of-all-trades" type of character, I only want more options available as my character progress. |

To see each corpmate undock in their free dreadnaught, made by corp To see my corpmates just have to deal with targets and fun, and all the treadmills being taken care of To see corp grow so we can do system conquest without anyone else to see the corp totally self sufficient on every single aspect
