my local and chat window keeps moving everytime i dock, undock, or open a link from chat. Not only does it move, but it also resizes. and very anoying when you have to fight.
The drone window also keeps moving around when i undock, always to the left bottom.
i did not have these issues before the patch and i thought the patch was suppost to get rid of this issues, but instead it has gotten worse for me

Edited by: Rob Silverton on 11/06/2008 16:52:21 I never had any problems with moving windows until this patch. I have even got Lock windows when pinned ticked but they move everytime you dock and undock like said above. |

Yeah; my overview no longer shoots off of the screen whenever I join a fleet. Instead, everything shrinks to a useless size to accommodate them, and then I get to unpin, resize everything, and repin. Yay!
The "fix" that was supposedly implemented to stop the drone menu from realigning with the left side of the overview when you undocked was apparently not actually there, or just plain and simply doesn't work, because that is working exactly as it was before.
Finally, weird crap is happening with window snapping. For instance, I open an info window, it's on the top of the screen with chat on the bottom and local in the lower middle. The info window resizes itself to be as wide as my chat window, and then my chat window and local window both shrink (!!) to seemingly arbitrary heights, not actually snapping to anything else (maybe my drone menu, or something?!)
I love EVE. Much more than a person should love a piece of software they didn't write themselves. But it has honestly the single worst UI of any game I've ever played. Players should be able to control the way they interact with the game, at the very least!
I know that this is a sore subject, but I wish CCP would open up their window manager, at least, to player development, or if not that then have some sort of competition of several UI designers and players vote on their favorite few to be selectable options for UIs. Any UI is good if it doesn't make me fear this. |

weird thing is, that this only happens on my main computer. On my other computer (win xp) it's just normal. but on my main gaming computer (vista) the windows move. |

I've only ever had this problem once and found it wasn't sufficient just to clear the cache. What I did was delete the CCP folder in:
C:\Documents and Settings\$USER\Local Settings\Application Data\
There may be another folder with _tranquility in it's name which will have the CCP folder in.

Edited by: Par''Gellen on 12/06/2008 12:35:49 I found a workaround. Clearing cache didn't work for me. I even reinstalled Eve from scratch on a different computer that had just been reformatted. Issue remained.
I had the same problem with roving bands of migratory Eve UI windows. It was a little annoying before the patch since the only window that would move was my chat window but now after the patch ALL my windows move around randomly when I dock. YAY! Go CCP UI programmer guy! You are earning your money well I see! Which brings to mind... How the hell does something like this get past even the slightest passing glance of even the drunkest QA department? The only way I'd miss something like this is if I were dead.
/me facepalms!
On a brighter note... Workaround that fixed it for me: Make sure none of the windows are touching each other. In other words, that cool snap-to feature? Yeah you can't use it. You have to hit ESC and set the distance to window snapage to 3 pixels then drag the windows away from each other just far enough so that there is some space between them and they don't attach to each other.
I'll post some screenshots of what I mean if the server ever comes back up.
/me facepalms again! |

It would be great to get bug reports from everyone who's experienced this problem so we can get a good idea of how wide-spread it is.
I'll have a chat with the UI programers regardless to see what we can do to help you guys out. ____________________________ I break things.

Although, no, this doesn't fix the existing problem.
I have had this problem since the release of Trinity and I have had it on two seperate machines with two completely different sets of hardware, and one of those machines has had both a hardware upgrade AND swapped from Win XP Pro to Win XP 64-bit.
During Trinity, it was just the chat box that wandered, but since the release of Empyrean Age it has happened with all windows and to a greater degree (i.e. much larger "wander" distances).
I have screen captures, too, showing the way I set up the boxes and how they move after log in (1 shot of each).

I experience the same problem since the last patch.
I arranged all my necessary windows on the screen (king size xxl windows on 1600x1200 resolution) but every single one finds it place and keeps the center of the screen clear in space.
Now every time I dock, or open a can in space, the client moves windows around to places where i sure don't want them.
My experience is: if windows borders touch each other (docked to each other) or in any case windos overlap just slightly, then the client tries move it to a position on screen where it doesn't overlap. It doesn't work in any case, since often windows are moved completely over smaller ones.
Usually I position my windows docked to each other on the left and bottom border of the screen when in station, and to the left when in space. Prior the patch everything opened fine where it last was open.
I guess that subroutine which tries to prevent windows overlapping just have to be eliminated. If I feel a window isn't in place I move it myself. But once when i moved it I want it to stay and reopen there.
I don't remember when it was exactly, but this isn't a new probelm. It already appeared once with a patch longer time ago. Was solved then a few days or weeks later.

I get this as well. It started with the patch before EA, but now with the EA patch it's far worse. Before EA, it was only certain windows, and once I moved one of the offending windows, that change lasted the entire time I was logged in. After EA it's every single window, every single time. I can't even loot my rat wrecks because every time I open a wreck it jumbles my entire window layout. It's really not good for those of us with OCD . |

Tanis? Can you help us out here? If we are required to submit bug reports about it then what's the trick to actually getting them past the filter so that someone can see them?
Reading responses like this make me think of a fax machine positioned above a shredder that feeds directly into a garbage can. ---

Edited by: Flex on 17/06/2008 18:01:00 I have encountered this issue since the EA patch, I followed the advice of Par'Gellen. I messed about a little more and found that the only window causing an issue was the drone window when this is not docked to anythgin there is not problem.
Prehaps this is the window causing the other issues? any thing that was connected to that window was shifted when I undocked/docked however now it is 4 px away from all other windows I dont seem to be having the problem.
Many Thanks Par for the workaround.
I have noticed since changing this that the drone window loads after all the other UI elements when undocking perhaps this has something to do with it?

Glad you guys found my workaround useful.
Although, I sure wish Tanis would tell us the trick to getting the bug reports about this past the kill filters. Being ignored by the devs when asking a legitimate question about something they told us to do is one of my least favorite things about Eve... ---

Thanx for the temp fix, this bug is one of 2 driving me nutz atm.

The best way to ensure your bug report gets through the filtering process (which is done manually, it is NOT automated) is to include as detailed of a description and as much useful information as possible.
Let me explain a little about how a bug is processed:
Once a bug report is submitted it goes into a queue. A bug hunter will then try to reproduce the bug based on the information and description given in the bug report. The most common reason for a bug report to be sent back is because the bug hunter was unable to reproduce the issue. Remember that if we cannot reproduce the bug ourselves it makes it very difficult to isolate the cause and get a fix made for it. This is why reproduction steps are always stressed so much.
The easiest and best way to avoid this happening is to include as much detailed information about your issue as you can.
Here are some hints on what to include in a bug report to give us the best chance of reproducing it.
Some good things to include in a bug report are: oRun logserver and attach the logs to your bug report oCheck to see if any Dump files are being generated and attach them if they are! oSystem information (ie. DxDiag.txt) oWhat are you doing when the problem occurs (details are VERY important!) oDoes it happen all the time, or just sometimes (if it only happens sometimes.. think of any patterns that you notice about when the problem happens) oHow often does it happen (every 5 mins, once per week, etc) oWhen did your problem start (ie. After 1.1 patch, or after you installed new RAM, etc) oDoes it only effect one character, one ship, one client installations, etc. oIf it's proving difficult to reproduce, perhaps include video or screenshots of the problem happening.
Bugs like this one that are not affecting all users and have no pattern that we know of yet are particularly annoying as they are always the most difficult to reproduce as a result of their inconsistency. ____________________________ I break things.

Also try adjusting the setting for "window snap distance" turning this down to 6 or 3 could help or even eliminate your problems in some cases.

Thanks for the reply, Tanis, but I have one further question:
What happens to the bug reports that cannot be reproduced? Is the info in them just discarded, or do you keep some kind of list of reported bugs that need further clarification, in case they should pop up again later? Because I encountered a skill-training-related bug that could have disatrous results if it ever returned. I bug reported it and received an "insufficient information" reply, despite my best efforts. |

All bug reports stay in our system.. we do not delete them.
If we cannot reproduce a bug report we will "close" the report, typically with a message explaining what other info we need. The person who submitted the report can then update or edit it, attach new files, etc.
At any time you can always look at all of your bug reports here. (requires logging in)
From that page you can update, edit, attach new files, view comments, etc. ____________________________ I break things.

I can quickly tell you how to reproduce this bug every time. Just look at my screenshot and adjust the windows so that they are "snapped together" at a resolution of 1280x1024. Undock, re-dock. Pow! Bugged crazy roaming windows.
I tried other resolutions with mixed results but 1280x1024 does it every single time for me without fail. ---
