Edited by: CEO Skillz on 11/06/2008 21:23:19 Hi.
I'm running Suse 10.3 on a Scaleo Pi 2530. I have just put compiz on, cause by default it did not seem to work, so I used the 1click everything works :) Problem is I can not run eve if xgl/compiz is on. I had to do a "xgl-switch --disable-xgl" and AltCtrlBackspace, made sure no more cube is on, start eve again from wine, it works.
Hmm, I'll re-enable it and run eve again, show you the error. It's something to do with GL and pixel format.
Anyone ran in any problems with this combination (compiz wine eve/other game) ? How did you solve it? (I know specifics don't apply) |

Never activate Compiz when trying to play a game!
Compiz uses a lot of performance and uses some graphic features which cannot be used by other programs at the same time!
So you have to turn Compiz off to be able to gain the full performance of your hardware. |

Only if you are running slower/older hardware. I have compiz running all the time (see my sig link), and my performance (fsp and system wide) is NOT degraded.
If you are running a memory constrained system or slower older video card, then yep, turn it off. Other wise, it is a GREAT way to run multiple accounts. (1 client per cube side.)

Ah I seem to have made them work together. I had to get wine rc4, my version was older.
What I noticed was a slight drop in performance, but I am too tired to log back into eve with compiz off to check how EW is acting without it. Maybe tomorrow.
Specs for this scaleo pi are not bad, but it only has 1 gig of ram which is bad imo. other than that it fares well for whatever I do on it. (AssaultCube) :D

Weird, I have 2GB RAM and 2x GeForce 7800GTs (SLI mode) and only one EVE client together with compiz already produces low fps ...
And yes, I am using the oficial proprietary NVidia drivers |

I'd say that you should turn off Compiz if you see problems.
However, there's no reason why Compiz should be a major performance overhead. For several reasons:
- It's true that when Compiz is turned on, other OpenGL applications will switch to Indirect Rendering. However, once Compiz and Wine itself get more mature, it's a negligible overhead (as in, hardly measurable). - Indirect rendering means that only one application has direct access to the graphics hardware - Compiz. Other OpenGL applications will ask Compiz to render for them. - Both Vista and Macs have composited desktops, using the same underlying principle, and work fine with games. - Nowadays, the drivers (specially ATI and Intel ones) are not mature enough, nor is Compiz or Wine. So you might run into some issues due to bugs in any of those components. For instance, EVE runs perfectly fine, but SolarWolf (not even a 3D app!) will lock up my system.

Search for the app fusion-icon, its a little icon that goes on the taskbar where you can easily turn compiz on and off.

I agree.
Turn off Compiz when playing Eve.
Really, why do you NEED to see fancy Windows and animation, etc when your playing Eve full-screen???
Just because a very few minority can get it to work doesnt mean that it is better. I turned it off and havent restarted it for the last two weeks and havent missed anything. I can still ALT-TAB between windows, but I dont get the fancy mac style toolbar on the bottom of the screen but I dont use it enough to justify having it. I do however use Eve every second I can, so the point is moot.
Just turn it off. You wont miss it.... but you WILL miss Eve if you cant get it running... (Can you say "Withdrawl Symptoms"?

I have a resolution of 1680x1050 so I play in a virtual Desktop in wine, which is set so 1560x975.
Compiz runs very well, when doing courier-missions i often surf the web or play tuxracer/ASC on another Desktop-Cube-Side.

Well I just upgraded from SuSE 10.3 to SuSE 11.0. and I had exactly the same issues with eve and compiz so I did not use compiz under 10.3
However when I installed 11.0 I was at first unhappy because Eve crashed and locked up so bad I feared even trying out the compiz features when I was not running eve. However in a fit of exasperation with the new SuSE I turned on Compiz and low and behold my whole SuSE box got perfectly stable (I had a couple of other issues besides eve), so I pulled out eve again and tried it only to discover that eve runs perfectly only with compiz ENABLED!
This is a win win for me as I like the pager features in compiz and fine the transparencies quite useful while gaming.
Your results may vary. Subvert the dominant paradigm. |
