I started because it looked fun, now im addicted and I keep coming back for the moments just before combat when you heart starts pounding, the social, political and trading aspects are also a bit of craic.

I initially came for the shiny spaceships and still here a month on because of a good corp. I Like the fact that you can set your own goals to work towards and if you pick up on the lessons out there to learn as you do things you can go far fast. But with the risk of losing everything if a gamble doesn't pay off. Plus the in game musics great! |

EVE is an online community which interacts in a space simulation. That in itself is great.
What I LOVE about EVE is that this community has a political dimension as there are space holding alliances and role playing groups all fighting each other.

I'm just going to pretend the OP ain't a troll.
I play for the cameraderie. A lot of my friends play and I made a lot of RL friends through the game. I like sci-fi, I like the RP. I like going really fast and blowing things up. I like getting toasted late at night on a Friday and raiding enemy space in a gang full of drunk Aussies talking ****.
I enjoy the story, I enjoy being even just a small part in the story. I enjoy thinking about strategy and tactics in traffic jams. I enjoy the interactive escapism of it all.
For <$15 a month I get an absolute tonne of entertainment and enjoyment out of Eve (I pay 6 monthly so forget how much it really costs in AUD etc). Trust me, with kids and a mortgage cheap social fun is a wonderful thing.
It's a social game and it's a sand pit game. ISK and skills don't mean a whole lot next to that, they just give you options. If you are not very social or you weren't the kind of kid who enjoyed sand pits back in the day you might not enjoy Eve. That's fair enough. I can't sit in front of a TV for longer than a movie before I pick up a book or log in but that's me.
All I can recommend is take this character, or a new alt, do something you would never consider before and go have a bloody adventure. The ore is much better in low sec and 0.0 but once you get there that will be the least of your concerns or likely interests.
I hope you find your fun, here or somewhere else.

I play Eve so I can be a slave to a nerd with a chip on his shoulder. I send my ship where he says, when he says, and I die in a lagfest.
Tomorrow, I will do it again, unless I am ordered to mine ice instead. |

If you can't see the point of EVE, then go away. That may sound harsh but it stems from a building frustration with the amount of people nowadays unwilling or unable to figure things out for themselves without someone telling them what to do. I think the consensus of the replies to this post... and the hundreds of others like it in the past, is that this game is what you make of it. If you don't have the motivation or will to set and achieve your own goals then there are plenty of other games that would be happy to have you pay them to hold your hand through to the endgame.
I suggest City of Heroes. Roll up a Claws/Regeneration scrapper and have some fun.

My preferred game for about eight years was Counterstrike. I did play WOW for about a year, and I loved the pvp in it until the expansion. I have finally gotten sick of CS, and I am now looking for something to fill the void, that is cheap fun, since I also have a family and bills to pay. Maybe my problem was creating a mining character. I hate mining. It bores me to death. But before creating the character it seemed that would be the best way to get into a good corp. Should I just start over with the kind of character I really want (a pvp one)? |

Unless you have truly terrible Perception, it's pretty much always quicker to just train PvP skills on your existing character.
Why do people create mining characters to start with? The ISK is horrible. Tell me, what was the attraction?

No - just train the new skills you want. If you get into a good corp they'll probably eventually have corp mining exercises now and then to build the Titans -- then you'll be glad that you have the exhumer skills and don't need to train them again. Not to mention the learning skills, which you presumably have a good start on.

There was really no attraction to creating a mining character except it seemed to be the best thing to do to get on with a good corp from what I read.
I have uploaded my character to ineve.net. Thank you for any advice.

Mate if you want PvP, you want some fun and you want a corp that will support you, help equip you and train you then consider re-rolling a Brutor warrior.
Aim to get him in a Rifter with Web, Scram & MWD as fast as possible (right skill selection and attributes make this about 2 days AFAIK for the MWD but you get the rest right away). Then join channel '-K-S-' and talk to the folk there about getting into Kinda'Shujaa (Young Warriors). It's the training corp for Ushra'Khan and has found a new life as our militia arm in faction warfare. You'll need good standings with the Republic but with some skills and some ISK (from mining as Menanar) there are ways to fast track that (ask in channel). By the time you can fit an MWD you should have the standings you need.
Then you will be right there on the front lines of the war against the Amarr, combat ops running around the clock. PvP trainers available and a support network of not just the Kinda'Shujaa but of the Ushra'Khan alliance.
We are a PvP & Role-Play alliance but quite relaxed. No 3am wake up call to man the POS guns. Unless you are Zool, we'd do that to Zool just because he is funny when he gets grumpy
Up to you, only thing I can offer you but Ushra'Khan is what has kept me flying for all these years.
Join Kinda'Shujaa |

1) sometimes I've got nothing else to do (yes, you can always go to a pub, but really can't do that everyday) 2) I always been a fan of space-based SF, space operas and such and if I can't own spaceship in real life, I'd at least fly in EVE
However - just an elaboration on 1 - it is not that I spend all my time in EVE, quite vice versa, but this is and interesting addition - the real challenge for me is to keep training skills cause I often don't log into EVE for longer time than my skills train.

TV sucks here in Spain. I'm not a big soccer fan, though I'm a fan of F1. But that's only every two weeks. I need to do something in between. And I love the feeling of being in space. The vastness of the galaxy. I'm addicted to it more that any other aspect of the game. I'm still a carebear, haven't tried the feel of real PvP (though I'm going to do some PvP when I have the needed skills,) but going from one planet to the other, traveling the galaxy... Oh, I love it. I can't quit it. ----

Really, I do not understand why ccp does not make 0.0 space ores worth way more than high sec ores. Or why they don't make it so there are unique items only in 0.0 space, like special skills or ships.
You mean like officer items, and pirate faction battleships and cruisers whose BPC's can only be obtained (easily) in null sec?

Well, big boys wanted big pew pew toy ships (MS, titans). To build them you need huge, tons of common ore, so big boys can play with their big big pew pew ships. Naturally, when there's a bigger demand than there is offer, prices of common ore go up. That's why regular ore prices went up. Get rid of titans, veldspar prices drop. Put titans there, veldspar prices rise. Suicide gank veldspar supplier miners in high sec, veldspar prices go up. Kill Chribba, veldspar prices go nuts! It surprise me sometimes how people don't think about the economic consequences of some of the acts the commit inside Eve. You need to reach a balance to make things work. Ruin that balance and someone gets very rich... But maybe, that's part of the attractive of the game. It's very complex, difficult to master or understand fully. You never know enough about it. You're always discovering something new, learning something new. It has no rules, people makes the rules, so it's very dynamic. And it looks great! ----

Why do I play, eh? It's probably because EVE Online is the deepest MMO-experience around, is set in space ( I am a hardcore Sci-fi -lover ), and always presents new things to learn. Heck, I have been playing for a year and a half, and I still feel that I only know one or two ascepts ( of combat, for example ) well, as I have specialized on certain ships. I need to broaden my knowledge, actually!
The social aspect is also important. I started to play with a good real-life friend of mine, and we've been in the same corp all the way from the beginning. ( This character I'm posting through is an alt, obviously ).
EVE is so good that while I do take breaks every now and then, I could never see myself quitting altogether. ----

Edited by: Thamuzz on 14/06/2008 11:35:23 Well I've actually recently become aware of another game I've apparently been playing for a while called "RL".
I don't quite understand it. I received a letter the other day (antiquated much?) from my insurance company saying that I don't have platinum insurance and the accident between my Typhoon and that silly old lady's Hoarder wasn't covered.
My bank account shows only one hundred and twenty 'dollars'.
My mates want to go to the pub for a drink but i fear they might end up stealing all my stuff. Besides I can't find Quafe anywhere.
A Concord Officer appeared at my door to take my statement over a fight that I had witnessed and didn't understand that both of those chaps had wardecced each other (what was this officer doing in low sec anyway?)
Hold on a sec, your enquiry into my infatuation with RL will be processed in 5 seconds judging by the speed of my typing.
