Yeah but does anyone talk like that? Seems to me even Europeans in conversation (in English at least) will say, "Hey man, Spore is coming out on July 9th!"

last I went to their official website, it was really just a sales-pitch to get more investors and very little else. no screenshots of games or anything... just a lot of financial talk.
IIRC, Phantom was the codename for either the Dreamcast or the N64. I think somewhere down the line it just got forgotten, sort of.
Also, the only feature Darkfall will probably have is the 10,000 player gameworld. They are going to have ridiculously huge problems with balancing if they intend to push all the features through. Players *will* manage to destroy the game within 3 months.
Duke Nukem Forever isn't vaporware, although i might only be saying that because i'm a believer ^^

it may have been the codename for either of those, I don't know... but it's also *definitely* a vaporware console cooked up by Infinium Labs (later named Phantom Entertainment)

No. In the UK its almost always "the ninth of July".
I'm gonna pirate it if there is anti-pirate software on the retail, buy it if not. I wouldn't let that "security" malware filth anywhere near my computer- not touching it 'til I see version with it all stripped away.

From what I've seen (well, heard) they also drop the "th" as well, which could possibly be said to make it slightly easier to say, but also makes it sound (even more) wrong!
Besides, the most logical way of ordering the date is year/month/day, as this means that alphabetical order is also chronological (as long as you use numbers, not words), but I'm pretty sure that I've never heard anyone use that date format in speech, as it just sounds awkward.

Darkfall is sort of an example. First the devs promised an mmorpg that sounded too good to be true, then they promised it would be ready for beta and then postpone it...7 years later they are still being hush hush.
Another example is the Duke Nukem 3d, you can find other examples by searching for vaporware on wiki.
Again, I doubt that Spore is vaporware but postponing it yet again would be insane.
Don't forget the famous Elite IV promised by Frontier Developments way back in the end of 1990. Note that the Elite Fan Club website has now been closed down. David Braben promised this game long ago to the fans who made his company what it is today but eventually turned his back on them in favour of Donkey Kong style arcade games for consoles.

It's when a company 'develops' a fake game to get everyones hopes up to make sure they don't buy rivals games, or something along those lines.
It is very unlikely that Spore is vaporware, but considering that this looked ready years ago I would suspect it of being fake if EA jsut so happen to postpone the launch date yet again.
Vaporware isn't about making fake games, it's about promising more than one can produce. This applies to games and hardware alike, a la the Phantom example given.
DNF is the epitome of vaporware, as it has won vaporware awards for the last 5(?) years. Plus an All-Time Achievement Award in vaporware.
Spore isn't vaporware, to my knowledge, but it's becoming dangerously close.

Apparently EA have released (or will be releasing in a matter of days) the Spore creature creator and are asking 5 quid for it. This is before the game itself has even released. Tragically, it seems EA are going to pull a Sims on this one.

Its easy enuff to make with a litte time , I just hope when the game comes out I dont have to deal with 12 arms & 10 legged npcs as it looks stupid I would rather have life like or real looking spore NPCS/
