I don't understand why people use frigates for mining. I chose a badger because it holds 10x-20x what the frigates can. Myself and many others must be missing something here as many of us have chosen this ship for mining.

People use frigates because they can mine faster. Though you lose so much time traveling to and from where ever your dropping it off at. If you have someone else to work with, have one person mine in a frig and have someone else carry it away for you. If your solo though, I always found it more interesting just to find a big roid and put my mining laser on it and go watch a movie. Either with a frigate or indy its going to be slow.
I use a cruiser (osprey) now to mine with. I put everything in a jet can, then haul it away when its time for me to go. Can usually fill a badger 6000m3 in like 20 mins.

Edited by: HeXxploiT on 14/06/2008 20:32:04 Ok it sounds like it comes down to travel time and the way one plays. When I mine I actually just let the game run in the background and with miner 1 it takes probably 1 hour to fill up 4000+. All the trips would kill me with boredom in the smaller ship. I should have miner2 skills in a few days and that should speed it up somewhat. Sofar this seems very effective as it's easy to make a couple million per day. Also what is a jet can?

Jet Can = Jettison Canister
Have a read through this guide for the complete run down on mining.

Edited by: Dosgar on 14/06/2008 22:35:00 WHen you right click something in your cargo hold whilst in space (undocked) there will be an option to 'Jettison'. This launches the item/items selected into space in a large container, known as a jet can.
People use these to mine because they can hold a hell of a lot of ore, compared to a regular ships' cargohold. Originally when a ship was destroyed it would leave a cargo container in space full of any cargo or modules fitted that weren't destroyed in the explosion. These containers are so big due to the possibility of a large amount of stuff dropping when the ship is destroyed.
Now you get wrecks, then a container if the wreck is salvaged.

A mining frigate can mine up to 4 times faster, and a mining cruiser up to 6-7 times faster.
You'd probably make more cash with the industrial on AFK autopilot running NPC trade routes than you could get mining in it (and it doesn't take one hour to fill up).

By "NPC trade routes" do you mean "courier missions"? I'd hate to think you were suggesting to new players that regularly hauling cargo worth ten times the value of their hauler while AFK on autopilot would be a "good" idea.

No, I mean NPC trade routes. Stuff like Carbon, Garbage, Antibiotics, Planetary Vehicles and such. All those things under "trade goods".
They don't pay all that good, and are not worth much, but still beats mining with a hauler.

Others have referred you to a long document which explains, among other things, what "JetCan Mining" is.
As for why it is a mistake to use an Industrial ship, such as a Badger or Iteron, for mining, there are two reasons:
First of all, you're doing AFK mining, and this means that you will often suck the asteroid dry while you're gone. Imagine you pick an asteroid, set your mining laser onto it, and then leave the computer for 60 minutes. However, after 15 minutes, all the ore has been sucked out of the asteroid, and the last 45 minutes were wasted.
There are a few things you can do to minimize, although not reduce, this. They involve fitting a Survey Scanner type module on your ship.
The second problem is that the industrial can only fit a single mining laser. Most frigates can fit at least 2, and most cruisers can fit a least 3, and on top of that, some frigates and some cruisers give a yield bonus to mining lasers, derived from your relevant frigate or cruiser flying skill level.
For instance, the Bantam frigate, a Caldari ship, gives a 20% bonus to mining laser yield per Caldari Frigate skill level, so that at level 5, you get twice as much ore, meaning that the ship's two mining lasers effectively count as four.
Likewise, the Osprey cruiser, also a Caldari ship, gives the same 20% bonus per level, so that once you have Caldari Cruiser skill level 5, you get twice as much ore, and each of the ship's three mining lasers count as two, for a total of six.
On top of that, you can also use mining drones. The Osprey can carry four.
But of course we're talking at-the-keyboard mining rather than AFK-mining, and for real people like you and me, ATK-mining can only be sustained for a few hours at a time a couple of days a week, so you might choose to continue doing AFK-mining.
I've given up mining completely (now I buy, haul and sell instead), but before I gave up, I found that I could spend the time between JetCan cycles writing emails. I'd move the ore from the cargo hold and into the JetCan, then Alt+Tab out to Windows XP and Moxilla Thunderbird, and write part of an email reply, then Alt+Tab back to EVE again when the cargo hold was nearly full (I even used a tiny computer timer program, that made a bell sound every X seconds, where X was usually 75 or 60, depending on whether I used mining drones too) and move the ore, then Alt+Tab back to Thunderbird and write some more of the email.

Also, you can't train the industrial skill if you're still in the trial account, so newbies who are just beginning and don't have money and can't fly an industrial will mine in a frigate.

Additional reasons to use a frigate:
1. Frigates are cheap. If you want to mine better ore in low-sec, for example, you may be better able to afford to lose a frigate, especially early in your career.
2. Frigates are nimble. If you are in low-sec, and a nasty miner-killing pirate happens along, you can usually get into warp before he can lock you to pin you down, at least if you pay attention, and are alligned to warp. In the time before probes were as good as they are now, you could ninja mine in 0.0 with little chance of being caught.
Otherwise, an Osprey is way better. Industrials are only good if you are just getting started and want to afk mine a lot. Battleships are pretty good mining platforms, and can easily out-tank mining barges/exhumers, (plus they can do combat, obviously).

How do you get 7 times better for a cruiser, compared to an industrial? I can only see how to get 6 times better (assuming they use the same meta level of mining laser).
Are you including the use of mining drones? (If so, your figure looks to match my experience.)

And then there are mining barges, which are like the twisted offspring of a mining cruiser and an industrial. They have a big cargo hold, but they still fill it in a few minutes.

You cannot train industrial ships on trial accounts. Only a cruiser, and it costs a 3+ mil ISK that you have to make flying some other ships around.

Beware of the 'innocent' miner in a frigate whom isnt really mining (Only one miner turret or one drone out or just floating there) if your in the buisness of piracy.
The term **** offspry comes to mind.
Of course this 'tactic' applies to cruisers as well.

So I can find them with their feet up on the dash in lowsec, and make their ship go pop-pop!
