While I don't agree that the Elders are an inherently bad development, I do agree that Evil Alien Conspiracies are lame, cheap science fiction, and EVE should be spared it. Its pretty much the lowest deus ex machina of the genre, and doesn't deserve a place in the character-driven, stark EVE universe.
Back to the Elders though. My money is that it is not necessarily the actual same actual Elders from way back when, but a society of their followers. Aside from the (much discussed in this thread) possibility that some of them may have survived, it is entirely likely that the Elders weren't all alone in their power; they probably had disciples, deputies, potential successors, and whole supporting governments surrounding them. When the actual Elders were eliminated, the Republic took the route of making a Tribal Parliament, which is what they have today. Those who were most embedded and most supportive of the old Elder system may have retreated / been forced from the limelight, and gone to form a government in Exile out among the Thukkers in The Great Wildlands. Although they're not the same Elders, they may be able to make claims to being their direct line descendants and their rightful heirs, even if only in spirit (by wanting to rule in the traditional way of the Matari people). Now the moment has come, the current Elders have launched a military coup, supported by the Thukkers, to reclaim the Minmatar civilisation from the (apparently) corrupt politicians in the Parliament. All makes perfect sense, and is all in keeping with the flavour of EVE.
Its also well worth reminding people that the Minmatar Republic is/was not a democracy, and never has been. The Parliament is all part of the tribal system, and is not likely to be directly elected (as far as I understood it). This isn't the deposing of a democratic government by a non-democratic one, its the deposing of one group of tribal representatives by another group of tribal representatives. ------
