A dungeon has two corridors and at the end of each corridor there's a door.
One door leads to freedom, the other one to the hangman.
There are no markings on the doors.
Outside of each door is a sentinel.
One sentinel is always truthfull.
The other one is a liar.
There is one prisoner in the dungeon awaiting execution.
The prisoner knows about the doors and the sentinels.
In order to know what door leads to freedom he can ask only one question and he can ask only one sentinel.
If he asks the right question he can choose the door of freedom once he knows the answer to his question.
What's the question?

let's call them door Freedom and door Death...
ask either of them: "which door will he (the other one) say is the door to freedom?"
The one that lies will lie about his friend's answer, and point to door DEATH.
and the one that tells the truth, will tell you the truth about his deceitful friend and equally point you to door DEATH.
so take the other door.

Ask either sentinel whether or not he is a sentinel and is this the right door?
The Liar will answer no and yes
The Truthful one will answer yes and yes
If the sentinel you talk to says he is not a sentinel, take the other door, not the one he recommends.

Ask the sentinel, "Is the other prisoner here to be executed?". The answer will show who is the liar and who speaks the truth.

The question you need to ask is: "what will the other sentinel say he guards - Freedom or death?" If he says "death", you go through the door guarded by the other sentinel. If he says "freedom", you go through the door guarded by the sentinel you asked.

The guard giving the instructions isn't automatically the truthful one by default. The matter of which one lies and which one tells the truth only has to do with the actual riddle after the rules of the riddle are given. You have two guards who are guarding two doors. One guard tells the truth. One guard lies. One door leads to a horrible death and the other door leads to the hangman.
Here's where it may get tricky. It has nothing to do with which one is the liar and which one is being truthful. The trick is to get them to give the same kind of answer. And here's how you do it. You have one truthful guard and one lying guard. If you ask the truthful guard if the other guard (liar) would say the door you're pointing at would lead to the hangman he'll truthfully tell you what the liar would say because you're asking the truthful one what the liar would say. So you get the lie as his answer by default. He is truthfully quoting the liar. If you ask the liar if the other guard (truthful) would say if the door you are pointing at leads to the castle the liar would NOT tell you honestly what the other door would say. He would tell you the lie because he is the lair. So you get the lie by default.
Either you're asking an honest person what a liar would say or you are asking a liar what an honest person would say. As a result you always get the lie as the answer. It's really very simple. If you ask one guard what the other guard would say (nevermind which one's truthful or lying) you will automatically get the lie as the answer by default. It's very simple.
BTW that was ripped from the labrynth. I just changed a few things. 80's movies ftw

I could edit mine to say 'the left door' or 'the right door', and it'd work still. since that one question will give the same answer no matter which sentinel you ask.

No matter what you ask it's still 50/50
It's not told in the OP that the lier sentinel is standing by the door to the hangman or not,
So even if you find out what sentinel is the lier or truth one, it makes no diffrence.
Questions, Comments, Problems, Please address them to the CSM..

This ones an easy one (and I've very carefully not read anyone else's answer for this one, since its one I think I can do).
You go up to either Sentinel and ask "If you were the other Sentinel, which door would you recommended I go through for freedom?"
The Truth Teller will comply with your request, and truthfully tell you what the liar would say- he'll tell you to go through the death-door.
The Lie Teller won't comply, and won't tell you what the truthful Sentinel would say- he'll tell you to go through the death-door.
So regardless of which sentinel you ask the question, you can do the opposite of what they recommend you do for freedom.

yeah in the movie she walks up to the doors who are the guards. Both doors knew which path was which and gave her the rules. You may only ask one question to one door and use that answer to pick which door to go through. One door goes to the castle and one to certain doom. One door lies and one door tells the truth.
By asking the first door what he thought the second door would say about where the first door goes she would get a default answer or a generic lie therefore giving away which door goes where.
