Howdy folks,
This thread is for folks having sound related problems. Many people have been reporting issues with Realtek or Intel on-board sound cards. Below are some things you can try that have worked for other players who have had sound issues:
- Update or re-install your drivers!!:
This is the single most-important step in resolving potential sound problems. Quite often simply updating your drivers can clear up a large number of problems.
- Run DxDiag:
Click Start --> Run
Type dxdiag and click OK
This will launch dxdiag. Click Next.
Check that there are no warnings on the DirectX Files tab. If there are it could be that you have corrupt/out-of-date/non WHQL drivers.
Click next
Run all the display tests. Note any errors. (if you have two monitors you'll need to run tests for each one)
Click next
Run all the sound tests. Note any problems or errors
Save the report to your desktop.
- Try to disable hardware acceleration in the EVE client:
Esc -> Audio -> untick "hardware acceleration"
- Try to disable all audion in the EVE client:
Esc -> Audio -> untick "Audio enabled"
Also be sure to file a bug report!
We cannot stress enough how important it is to file a bug report if you are having a problem. A bug report is the single best way to get us the information we need to fix problems with the EVE client.
Some good things to include in a bug report are:
oRun logserver and attach the logs to your bug report oCheck to see if any Dump files are being generated and attach them if they are! oSystem information oWhat are you doing when the problem occurs (details are VERY important!) oDoes it happen all the time, or just sometimes (if it only happens sometimes.. think of any patterns that you notice about when the problem happens) oHow often does it happen (every 5 mins, once per week, etc) [/*] oWhen did your problem start (ie. After 1.1 patch, or after you installed new RAM, etc) oDoes it only effect one character, one ship, one client installations, etc. ____________________________ I break things.

Well I WAS suffering from the 975x chipset and realtek HD soundcard causing a bsod everytime I used an armor repairer issue, and I was going to post in here with the resulting bsod I planned on getting tonight when testing for this thread. Before I did though I updated to the R196 drivers from realtek, and all of a sudden the problem is gone. Checked it twice to be sure.
Windows sound acceleration is on, configured for 7.1 the realtek control panel is set for 8 channel, and eve has sound hardware acceleration turned on. Worked fine!
Realtek R196 drivers
^^ Those are the drivers I used. It shows as version 5.10.0.5643 on a ALC882 audio codec card. Very happy to be able to use all my speakers again.

Edited by: Loash on 25/06/2008 08:06:17 Running an EVGA 680i MB with Realtek onboard sound, dxdiag confirmed as latest versions...no problems identified and onboard dxdiag tests completed successfully. Currently running under XP since I wanted to rule out any Nvidia graphics driver issues under my Vista boot. Problem present since EA patch.
With 192 Realtek drivers (recommended by EVGA, ie. lastest available from EVGA homepage);
- HD acceleration enabled/sound enabled - freeze (black screen and cannot revert to desktop, hard reset required) - HD acceleration disabled/sound enabled - freeze (black screen and cannot revert to desktop, hard reset required) - HD acceleration disabled/sound disabled - no freeze
With 196 Realtek drivers (latest available direct from Realtek);
- HD acceleration enabled/sound enabled - freeze (black screen and cannot revert to desktop, hard reset required) - HD acceleration disabled/sound enabled - freeze (black screen and cannot revert to desktop, hard reset required) - HD acceleration disabled/sound disabled - no freeze
The freezes normally happen about 15 to 20 minutes after loading up EvE, so far I've just left my character docked in station whilst running these tests. I need to retest with sound off for a longer period of time since the longest I've left it running for so far with HD acceleration and sound disabled is about 45 minutes.
I've not submitted a bug report yet but will do after some more extended testing this evening.
EDIT: typical, I always think of one more thing when I've pressed "submit". I've also tried running another game with sound and HD acceleration running and leaving it sat at initial logon point and that ran for 45 minutes with no problems. |

Edited by: Andrue on 02/07/2008 10:14:04 I'll probably get swatted by the moderators for this but I think that the biggest issues with sound are:
* Not enough effects in game. * The effects that are in game have varying levels of volume and quality. * The sound is not being used to convey useful information.
The technical issues are a problem for some people but can at least be addressed by upgrades of hardware or drivers. What we really need is 'Trinity for audio'. Some people (I'm one) actually do appreciate and respond to audio effects more than graphics. To me good graphics are cute eyecandy that wears off quite quickly. Emmersive, interesting and good quality sound OTOH can keep me interested for a lot longer. -- (Sarcastic mission running veteran, 4+ years)

I have a Xifi Creative card and the latest drivers install and work just fine. It also vastly reduces the CPU load such that I don't need to turn sound off to regain FPS. -- (Sarcastic mission running veteran, 4+ years)

I'm trying uninstall my Realtek high def audio driver but the damn thing keeps automatically getting reinstalled after every restart! So what I'm going to try to do is uninstall, without restarting, install the Realtek drivers posted above and -then- restart.

I was using realtek and kept experiences blue screen of death on mission, after warping, entering combat or just trying to dock my ship.
Went through a lot of pulling hair, reading, and experimenting. The final solution: turned off hardware acceleration in sound options within the game.
All video stuff is set to maximum. Platinum content on.

I have Realtek too. With hardware acceleration the whole PC crashes and reboots. With disabled it is fine.

Dont know if this is a sound isssue due to my drivers... but when i join corp chats eve voice my sound input button works once, then it stops working, tried changing it to buttons on keyboard and the mouse, no luck. Also happens in fleets sometimes. Also deleted cache to see if that was the problem.
Note i dont have any other voice channels running at the same time.

I was getting BSOD on startup of Eve, installed those drivers and so far its all working like clockwork.
Thanks for the info.

I'm having an issue where I can't hear the sound effects of strip miner modules on my ship. I can hear normal mining laser turrets just fine, but I have to disable the sound, then turn it back on to get the sound effects for strip miners to work. Is this a bug in the game or do I have an issue with my sound driver or hardware or something?
I'm using Windows XP Pro x64 Edition with a Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum sound card. I'm using the most recent drivers available. I don't think it's a problem with my speakers, but I'm using Logitech 5.1 surround speakers as well.
Please let me know if there is a way to fix this issue. Thanks.

Having a similar issue on Windows Vista Ultimate x64 using Realtek ALC888 Audio. Mining Lasers sound like a cricket sawing through sheet metal. Quickly oscillating and overlapping cycles on a single laser. Problem didn't occur until last patch. Toggle sound off/on seems to temporarily fix it.

I'm having the same problem as Seraph Avatar, on windows vista home, 32bit.
Alt tabbing also seems to stop the screeching sound.
I'll file a bug report along with. Only seems to happen with strip miners however.

Same problem as the previous posts, I'm using vista home premium x64 w/ driver version 6.0.1.6285 which is supposed to be the most current according to everything I've been able to find, and dxdiag says everything is fine.

I'm having the same mining laser sound issue. I have a SoundMAX integrated digital HD audio device. Disabling and then re-enabling the audio seems to fix the problem temporarily.

Fresh install of EVE. I get a crash with audio driver before I can even get a chance to accept the EULA, click "yes" on the update popup, and hit esc to get to the menu to disable audio. Where the hell has prefs.ini moved to, and what do I put in it to disable audio?

No new news on the realtek sound issues? My hulk sounds like its dragging cats across blackboards every time I fire up the lasers, new drivers did nothing and I will NOT play without sound. EVE is the only game that has sound issues on my computer, granted I can switch sound off after firing up the lasers then back on again to correct the sound problem, but if I dock and start mining again the horrid screeching is back and I have to repeat the procedure!

Well, I finally caved in and disabled my onboard sound (realtek 975 chipset) and purchased an AudioFX Pro 5+1 5.1 channel usb headset. Sound works great now.

Of all the games I've played in 20 years Eve has the worst problems with sound of them. Whatever they're using to manage their client audio simply does not work. No other game I've used under windows from 3.1 to Vista has had so many problems with the audio that the only way to enjoy the game is to do it in silence. Which is really, really sad.

I'm currently running: AMD dual 2.4 8gb RAM 1tb RAID, 250gb RAID (OS partition) SLI 8800 GTS Realtek... uhh... realtek. Okay, HTF do you figure out what piece of realtek audio hardware you're using? It's on a Fatal1ty AN9 32x board, but no where can I find out the hardware version for an accessory card??? Current drivers 6.00.0001.5735 (working on updates).

I despise wearing headsets... and I can't fit a different audio card in my system because of the screamingly inefficient SLI hardware design (every PCI slot is now covered, only the audio riser is accessable). Does anyone know where I can find a USB driven 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system?

Hey... you know...
Bethesda software doesn't have so many sound hiccups... why don't the devs give them a call and find out how they can create really cool games that don't have sound problems?

The client won't let me turn off Hardware Accelleration at all. I can click it all day long and it does not deactivate or even respond... attempting to click and relog as a GM advised does not uncheck it.
Okay, we've got another complete breakage of the Operating System while eve is running... Need to get this fixed ASAP, CCP.

Edited by: William Clarque on 06/12/2008 22:00:08 Edited by: William Clarque on 06/12/2008 21:57:14 I just installed new ram, and I'm having a sound issue. I'm getting an intermittent low frequency buzz. It usually seems to be triggered by clicking on a window, and sometimes stops if I move the cursor off that window. I reinstalled my sound drivers, but that didn't fix the problem. When I disabled hardware acceleration, the problem seemed to get worse. There are no apparent problems when I totally disable EVE sound.
I ran DxDiag twice. No issues in display tests. In the sound test, however, the last sound didn't play the first time. The second time, I got the low-frequency buzz instead of the last sound. The error message DxDiag generated for this was: Failure at step 20 (User verification of hardware): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code) Since my first two results for the sound test were a bit different, I ran it a third time. There were no errors on the third test, but the last several sounds were quite a bit quieter than the rest.
My system information is: AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200+ 2.20 GHz 4GB (4x1GB)DDR2 800 ram: All Corsair model TWIN2X2048-6400C4DHX G ATI Radeon X1900 XT 256MB Sound Blaster Live! 5.1
Any suggestions?

Here is a fix for anyone finding that they cannot turn off the Hardware Acceleration feature (which seems to be causing some of the problems).
With 'Audio disabled' you cannot deactivate Hardware Acceleration.
First: Enable Audio Second: Click on the Hardware Acceleration selection. Nothing will happen. Third: Close and then re-open the settings window, you will now see that Hardware Acceleration is disabled.
Note: If you shut the client down with audio enabled the settings should remain unchanged. If you shut down the client with audio disabled Hardware Acceleration will be re-enabled by default. You will then need to follow the above steps to deactivate it again.
With audio disabled I have not suffered any further client issues causing complete system lockup.
Of Note: I suffered two identical siezures while running Fallout 3, but have not been able to replicate the cause. Updating my audio drivers seems to have corrected the F3 issue, but not the Eve issue.
System Stats: AMD Dualcore 2.4, Fatali1ty AN9 32 mb (realtek audio onboard). 1tb RAID (250gb OS Raid) 8g System RAM Realtek HD audio 2x EVGA 8800 GTS SLI running 2x 22" HD LCD Windows Vista Ultimate All drivers up-to-date.

Nice to find this post here (Thanks Andy) !
Anyway, Ive been suffering a 7f (0d,00,00,00) BSOD recently running two seperate clients. I figured being on a new PC that it was some hardware issued, and have being trying to diag that since. My above-mentioned mate looked thru my dmp fle and found a reference to RtkHDAud.sys ( RtkHDAud+91cf0 ), then found this thread.
Okay, so for now, I discovered that my second client (the one that caused the crashes) had hardware acceleration enabled. I unchecked that today - Ill try to keep you posted :-)) |
