Edited by: Tal Nok on 20/06/2008 18:38:14 I need to complain about question 7 as it doesn't make sense:
How frequently would you play a video game that you find highly desirable?
Mainly because it doesn't matter how much or how free the game is, it's how playable is it.
Example, if EVE was $25, or if it was free, I'd still play.
Example 2, Guild Wars is free, yet I don't play it one bit.
I feel there needs to be a "Cost doesn't matter as long as the game is enjoyable" selection.
EDIT: Hell, theres a lot of questions that have too many if's that can't be answered directly.
If the game is free and it sucks, I wouldn't play it period. If it was good, and charged $500 I'd play it.

Edited by: Pottsey on 20/06/2008 20:20:16 The ôWhat is your education level?ö could be misleading as collages and uni donÆt have the same meaning or education level depending on where you live. The few high schools around here are all private schools from age 11 to 16. I believe in other counties a high school is 18+.
ô9. How frequently you would play a video game if you purchased it forö How can you answer that? Surly it depends on how good or bad the game is. You donÆt force you self to play bad games. I buy games and then the amount I play depends on how long the game is and how good it is. Not how much I spent on buying it.
ô10. How frequently would you play a video game if it was given to youö Again not really practical to answer, if they gave me Barbie adventures, I would never play it, if they gave me say Civ 4 I would play it all the time.

Then your answers should be exactly the same for both sections. But wait. What if they weren't?

I filled it in, but felt that it was a little too generic, pandering to WoW and its clones. I also sent a wall of text that may shed some light on important things that werent covered, such as the importance of voice comms in establishing relationships in MMOs and the possible impact of GTC trading on the cost side of the survey.
Best of luck in your research (dont envy you in doing the stats on this!)

Just finished the survey. On the portion relating to 'desirability of a game, amount of time spent playing, as related to price', there's a text box where I typed them a nice long note that the only correlation (to me) that price has, is that I damned well better get what I'm paying for. I don't play a game more if I'm paying more for it.
Direct example - I play eve...mmmm, on average, 3 days a week, maybe 12-24 hours. I also play TF2, which has no monthly sub, and I'd say I average 20-30 hours a week.
Eve is one of a menu of games on my plate. I continue to subscribe because it continues to provide an enjoyable experience. I pity anyone who feels 'omg, I'm paying 15 dollars a month! Must play a lot to recoup my investment!'. That's just missing the point.

I agree with the concerns raised by previous posters. Money simply can't be compared dollar-by-dollar versus the quality of the game. If it's a very good game, I'd play it until it would compromise my financial state. If it sucks, I'm not going to play it for free.
Sadly, this survey seems like some manager wanting an overly simplified scheme of how much he should charge. Does not work that way. :D

I'd suggest you raise the suggested time to 45 minutes.
I agree with other posters that dollar cost for a game has no effect on how often I play it, only on if you will try it. I would not play a crappy game even if it were free, and I would not play the best game ever if it cost more than $15 a month, or $50 in the store. Similarly the best game ever, if it were free, I'd play it a ton, and if I was conned into spending $100 on a terrible game, I would never play it. - - - Originally by: CCP Garthagk While these forums may not give you everything that you want, they will usually let you post.

Seriously... I have no clue what half the questions are asking because they make no sense.
i.e. How frequently would you play a video game that you find highly desirable before the monthly fee is due to continue game play online?
What?
Also the survey seems to jump to the conclusion that the time spent playing games and the want to play a game is solely based on cost. Because I pay $10 per month I will play the game less than if I were to pay $15 a month. In my opinion this is a ridiculous conclusion to come to without any prior knowledge.
If you are attempting to find out whether people who pay more, play more. You need to restructure your survey so it's not taken as a foregone conclusion.
I believe that your results will not provide an accurate answer to the question you're asking.
Hope you can restructure and come back, -Nate

I don't know how hard this question is. If there's a game I like, but it's $30 a month while all others are $15, there is a really really strong change I am sure as hell not gonna play it.

Dude. Don't give them (CCP) ideas...
Interesting survey, although some questions were a little difficult to interpret and the freeform stuff at the end had me giggling a bit ("What level is your avatar"? laff).
The most interesting questions were indeed the main bit, if there were any connection between having paid for something and the desire to play it.

That was a long survey. . .
Too many questions with one variable provided, when it is dependent on so many more. The Eve responses are going to be a bit. . . different. Rare is the game where you can screw someone more effectively than you can here, fosters just a bit of paranoia in the vets.
Also, so many gaming preferences change between summer and the college school year. In college, I play a lot of Brawl, the Wii is available and the friends are there. Started it but the first page was just ridiculous:
1. I didn't really understand the education level selections. I'm a UK university graduate from a 3 year computer sciende course. Does that mean I'm in the 'some college or vocational training', 'four years of college' or 'graduate school or other post graduate training' section? I have no idea.
2. How frequently would you play a game that is highly desirable - before the monthly fee is due to continue game play online? What does that even mean? How often do I play just before the monthly fee is due?! Well the same as the rest of the time of course, it's irrelevant.
3. I've never paid for 2 months at once in any game but I have paid for more. Eve 3 months and planetside 6 months. Planetside I pretty much always played daily, Eve, more like weekly. i.e. The answer is different for different games.
4. How desirable would a video game need to be if it cost x per month to play. Why the hell would ANYONE play a game that is 'not at all desirable'?
5. How frequently would you play a videogame if it cost $20, $40, $60. You can't be serious... I've bought tons of games both as one offs and as monthly subs. I've spent weeks and weeks playing somthing I got for around ú5 like audio surf but then got bored within about 30 mins of playing the ú40 GTA 4. IT DEPENDS TOTALLY ON THE GAME. The question is ridiculous and CANNOT be answered.
I'm sorry but at that point I thought it best to cut my losses and not waste any more time on this. Since I took the time to right this, I'll also email you this feedback. --------------------------------------

The idea of studying the effects of sunk cost is an interesting one. Unfortunately, the survey does not leave much room for the impact of desirability. As several people have stated, the desirability of a game is generally more significant than the price, to a point. Finding that point is an ongoing challenge for game publishers.
The survey touches on the interaction of sunk cost in terms of time and price. However, a few hours and a few levels is an insignificant cost in terms of time for most games.

Wow, long survey is long. Good research though.
Only thing I really had an issue with were the questions relating to how much you paid for a game vs how much you play it - there's plenty of free Asian grinders out there but I don't play them every day. It's more about quality than cost (or who gave it to you)

As a graduate student myself I object (perhaps object is too strong of a word) to some of your questions.
For instance, there are a lot more variables that go into "would you continue to play the game if they raised the price, and how much would you be willing to pay" than "I spent some time to get to level 20."
For instance, since your survey seems to hit on this, who I'm playing with matters, and the community matters.
Additionally, things like how polished the game is, how well I like the game concept, and whether or not I enjoyed the game play would seriously impact, above and beyond my "level," what I'd be willing to pay as a monthly fee to a game company.
Cheers,
-Karl

Thank you forum members, without your responds this research would be impossible. I am sorry for some of the questions especially the ones that measured avatar characteristics a WoW player helped me design it. I am very new to the world of online gaming and I have learned a lot. From my experience with the game through playing it is very different. We will be closing the survey after the 4th of July weekend. Thank you for your feedback on the survey. I am an undergraduate and I am still learning how to design a survey. This website has been very accommodating to my research and I would like to thank the administrator who allowed and stickyed my post. Thank you again for your help if you want to contact me about the survey I can be reached at my email [email protected]. Results of this study should be posted on this site in the fall or late summer. Eksearcher |
