Okay.. let me get this right. First OP says something along the lines of "A new player influx will never happen in EVE" then goes on to say that only numbers matter and that enough newbies in rifters can kill anything (Wah wah the blob). Which is it..? If there is no influx of new players, where would all these newbies in Rifters COME from?
I will give you this. I think that CCP is bending an ear and listening very carefully to what those in Goonswarm and TEST have to say. They would be monumentally stupid not to. When it comes to recruiting, both organizations have exactly the same ideas and both run neck and neck for some of the best new player training methods and materials in the game. You are talking tens of thousands of new players who have been brought in by Dreddit and Goonswarm alone. Lets just think about that. 10,000 *NEW* accounts is $149,500 a year in NEW revenue from subscriptions alone. Of course, between TEST and Goons over the last two years, far more than 10,000 new accounts have been created. A great many more. Dreddit alone gets between 200 and 500 applications a month, the vast majority from low SP characters who have just started or just re-subbed after a long absence. That means that TEST and Goons represent a increasing revenue stream for CCP.
With that kind of money on the line, you are really surprised that CCP takes a good hard look at the concerns raised by those new customers? Vets on the other hand, either are so engaged and have so much invested in the game that they are likely never to leave, or they get bitter or old or simply not interested so they stop playing. That is a player retention issue. As EVE continues to grow, obviously new player activations out weigh player churn. Vets are also less likely to buy ISK through the Plex system, so while they may get the requisite monthly fee from those accounts one way or the other, they are unlikely upsell them on other products available from CCP.
This is simply CCP listening to their customer base. TEST and Goons are very lucky to have a advocate such as Mittens, but you must realize that Mittens does what any good leader does: he finds out what his constituents want, and then he gets out in front and leads them there. He is very good at what he does, and he has the time and the energy to devote to his cause. There is no conspiracy here, just plain old good business sense and one extremely talented leader who knows how to get his constituents agenda actioned. |
