Firstly, I apologise if this has been covered before (it probably has) but obviously I haven't seen it or I wouldn't be asking.
I'm examining my options for a new notebook (specifically the "sub-notebooks" because they're so compact) and have lately become more aware of the Asus Eee PC range.
I'm aware they run Linux and that EVE has a Linux client available, but after that I'm a little lost at sea as my non-XP/Vista experience is extremely limited.
So, I'm curious to know if anyone has had success with merging the Eee PC range and EVE. If so, how was your experience in terms of making it work and what kind of performance do you get? Did you install it onto an external drive instead of the SSD perhaps?
Disclaimer: Mind you, I'm not planning to use it for PvP, this is mostly for checking/changing my skills, market orders and mananging in-game communications while away from base, maybe running the odd low-level mission or AFK hauling some junk between points A and B. Essentially non-critical stuff I can do passively while I'm supposed to be working.
I've been looking at something like this as an example of attributes.

Edited by: Ravow on 23/06/2008 03:15:54 Hi!
You can run EVE on EeePC+Linux!
I made it with ArchLinux and my Surf2GB (with a 8GB SDHC card)

As you see, the result are not very impressive BUT you can trains your skill and play with the market!

(Wow, I didn't quite realize how tiny that screen really is!)
But thank you very much for your response as now that I know it is possible, I have an incentive to look further into the Eee PC platform.

If you really want to play EVE on Linux, I would suggest getting a Dell Laptop with ubuntu preinstalled. They are generally less exspensive than their windows counterparts and both laptops are the best models of their class, such as the XPS M1330. Depending on how you go with an nvidia card or not, everything should be 100% compatible with Ubuntu, and you can install windows if you chnage your mind. If your on a tight budget, the EeePC is a good choice, otherwise go for a full laptop.

My Eee pc is also running Arch, good to know it's working. What's the install size like? I've got a 4G with a 4Gb card. Odds are that it'd have to be carded.

Celric Gunsiri, thank you for your suggestion.
While I understand that Dell can be quite affordable I've also been frequently warned, both by people I know in EVE, college and other computing professionals not to bother with Dell products. I'm not discussing whether such preconceptions are fair, just stating that while I've had no direct experience with them (Only HP & Toshiba) this volume of concern has made me a little leery of them all the same.
Will I have issues with Ubuntu and nVidia cards?
Price isn't a major concern as I expect I could easily afford a middle-range notebook, say $1500 USD, or maybe slightly more. I don't necessarily want to spend that much if I can avoid it, of course.
My main consideration presently is establishing a list of options I can examine soon - according to criteria which are currently in a small state of flux. While an Asus Eee PC won't suit all these (annoyingly variable) criteria, being able to play EVE in some capacity is still a mark in favor of it!

Mine is a 2GB surf model with a 8GB card.
I kept the 2GB for Arch Linux and the 8GB card for series + EVE (EVE Install = 3GB)
I will do other test this night with the other Intel video driver.

Hey this is celric gunsiri,
Dell did have problems a long time ago but ive used just about everyone of those Laptops with no issues. The XPS would be the best choice, ive tested it and it runs ubuntu 8.04 flawlessy. nVidia cards are the best for linux because they have much better drivers than ATI. For me, Ubuntu runs EVE much better than windows does. Im guessing because theres less use on the cpu and gpu, but most games run at high quality smoothly with almost no freezing (EVE and ETQW being the big two). If you arent interested in a dell, theres many skecthy third party laptop dealers that have cheaper linux systems that may or may not work 100% with their hardware, or you can compare compatibility lists and what not and go for a windows installed PC and dual boot.
