ive heard rumors that in the higher level mining missions, sometimes low sec ores will spawn along with the usual useless ores. any truth to that?

Yes, some level 3 and 4 missions spawn Omber. For example: Downing the Slavers.
But I don't think it worth your time since you make much more money killing the rats in the missions (in ISK/hour).

all the mining missions I've had so far have used the placeholder ores like polygypsum.

For some week the mining mission spawned low sec ores beside the "fake" ores. Then the low sec ores were removed (or at least I don't see them in the missions where I did see them previously).
So I think that currentlyyou get no extra low sec ore in those missions.

You get no ores whatsoever in mining missions.
The ores you need to mine for the mission are quest variants of the standard ones and you cant do anything else with them and they are the exact ammount you need for the mission no more no less, and if by chance you get a fighting mission with asteroids they are never good, or its so rare that doesn't need mentioning. And you can totally forget about doing mining missions on a mining barge. Either you do it on a mining cruiser or on a battleship, so when your best ability is to jump in about 50km from the roids you need to mine the fun starts getting there with 50-100meters a second.
Second level mining missions consist of 10 roids or so spread like hell which barely contain enough ore to mine in 1 full laser cycle, meaning that the good mining lasers do a 3 minute cycle and a the usual roid needs about 1 min tops to mine so not only you risk running out of power but you have to keep track of each mining laser and the time its been into a cycle so you don't turn 5 minutes worth mining into half an hour of wasted time.

I agree with this, except in one case: New Frontiers (1/7). It's a Level 3 mission which has some Gneiss in it, and it should not take you that long to get it. Especially since the mission requires you do a little mining in the first place. |

theres missions out there not nesseserly given by mining agents that have plenty of ore to mine in. i dont remember the name of one such mission but there is over 100 roids of veldspar and scrodite each having 50,000 units. granted they are "useless ores" as u call them they come in very large numbers and any one u ask these days says trite is the best to sell so that is your money maker there if u like or want to mine.

I have to agree with this - when mining missions were first released lots of them had ores in them other than the mission ores.
However, since about a month after Trinity I haven't seen any of the 'normal' ores, just the craptastic mission ores.
That said if you do combat lv. 1 missions for a bit you're sure to get one that spawns loads of Veld, which is worth more than anything outside of 0.0 at the moment anyway.

kind of removes the point of doing mining missions if there is nothing to mine.
a kill mission (the blockade lvl 2) leaves you with alot of veld pyrox and plag.
nothing but high sec. but it is still worth alot to the right people.
mining mission is supposed to take place in unknown roid belts so there should be other ore there

agree with crawler - no sense to make mining missions for LP only and a small bounty of some rats (if ever) - unworthy and boring. CCP please give mining missions some "extra" asteroids for the miners please.
if i remember right the "enemies abound" missions (especially 1 and 2) have a huge amount of omber roits!

Part 1 has huge amounts of Omber and Kernite. Parts 3 and 4 have some Omber as well. |

The best stuff I ever got from a mission was in a Rogue Drones level 4 combat mission.
I got 7M ISK worth of low sec minerals out of those pests.

I don't know about y'all, but I happen to like the sentient drones that salvage for T2 rig components that I keep running into on my mining missions.

well if you want to use a barge or exhumer and dont want to travel 50 km :
you jump in, set your overview for the specified ore that you need...right click bookmark location. then warp anywhere, and warp back on your new bookmarck about 2000 meters away from the roid. With your exhumer. And you dont have to fly the 50 km to the roids.
Its only nice to get your standing enough high to have a perfect refining. But after that, just go in any belt and mine. Mining mission are not worth it.
