Here's the first in a series of weekly chronicles looking at the powers that be in EVE. The Minmatar need a leader, and someone worthy will have to step up to the plate.
This chronicle was written by Gauti (CCP Gnauton) Fri=riksson.

I like how we're seeing that the Minmatar, even though they all hate the Amarr, still have their own political divisions and problems that arise. Much like all the other Empires do. -----

Edited by: Elsebeth Rhiannon on 23/06/2008 16:55:23 First: awesome! Thank you very much! I loved the style of that. I like especially how it makes Shakor more human and one of the "needed to be done" crowd rather than a straight-forward hero. I also like how it shows that the conflict between Midular and Shakor is not personal, but more due to circumstances, and regretted (probably by both).
I feel that kind of dark necessities mood fits the EVE storylines very well. Well done.
Then:
Quote: But you dealt with the Elders, sir.
Could you please please please please stop referring to "the Elders" in the news and stories as if they were general knowledge in the world, without telling anything about them to the players? It makes RP pretty much impossible, if something of that magnitude is a fact of life in the world, but we as players do not know who the hell those Elder-people are, or even who our characters think they are. It is driving me insane.

It's only driving you insane because the story evolved in a direction you weren't expecting, having acclimated yourself to existing lore like an obsessive trekkie. Events change. Get used to it and quit complaining, jesus. Adapt already.

elsebeth, i think theodicy covers the information on the Elders fairly well. I'm aware you don't really like that back story but it is really quite developed and also the foundation for the novel it seems so perhaps another glance might yield a bit more of an understanding?
as for an IC pov, they're the stuff of legend (a number killed on DOD) and we've never seen one alive but we've suddenly heard tell of their existence. Sapphrine always hoped for a resurgence of the old more tribal traditions so is happy with this. A more dedicated servant to the republics government could be torn between abject disbelief that such beings still exist or a simple gratitude that so many had been saved but a wariness of the unknown especially as it came at the cost of the government system you've supported.
I can see a number of ways that this can be played from all sorts of angles and I think if you get past your initial unease at how the PF has moved you can also.

Guys, did you actually read what Elsebeth wrote there?
We are (mostly) happy with the story as it is now. You can stop arguing for it.
The question posed was what do we, our characters, know about "the Elders" - what we know, including what we know from Theodicy, is not enough to make us go out on the streets and celebrate the return of the Elders. Sure, we can make up our own ideas on what it might mean that "The Elders Have Returned", but it's a bit annoying to make up your own stories and be contradicted later by CCP, when it's about stuff that's supposedly "well-known" ...

Istvaan, Sapphrine, you are missing my point. I would love to play this and I actually started a bit on the IGS already.
The point is NOT that the backstory evolved to a direction I do not like. It did, some, though not as badly as it initially looked like, but that's not the point here. The point is that I do not know where it evolved to.
If you could answer the following questions, that would help me to begin:
Originally by: Sapphrine as for an IC pov, they're the stuff of legend
What do the legends tell of them?
Quote: we've suddenly heard tell of their existence
What have we heard tell about that?
Quote: torn between abject disbelief that such beings
What kind of beings are they that I would disbelieve in, according to the legends and/or current information, if I tool this route?
Quote: I can see a number of ways that this can be played from all sorts of angles
I can too. The problem is not there are not ways to play this. The problem is not that I do not know what the truth is. The problem is I do not know what my character would know. The information on "the Elders" is very, very undetailed, even worse than what we know about how the Republic's government works.
If I am mistaken and just simply have missed some info or don't remember it from Theodicy, kindly point me to it. I tried looking for it, but failed. :(
EDITed to add: What Arkady said. The point is that I do not want to make up stuff that is "generally known" in the game world, because CCP has the final word on that, and I think they already have it planned, and I do not want to end up having contradicted it where my character would have not.

Ok, a compilation of useful facts from Theodicy:
Originally by: Theodicy, p81 the Elders were on the brink of uniting all of the tribes into one Republic.
Originally by: Theodicy, p103 ôAccording to Viola, the Elders are literally the wisest members of the seven tribes,ö Baer continued. ôThey allegedly possess intimate knowledge of every other tribe including their own. But their existence is officially denied by the Minmatars. Instead, theyÆre treated as legends, like mythical beings, all for the singular purpose of keeping their real identities secret.ö
Originally by: Theodicy p149 ôYou also need to know that the Elders taken to Diemnon are dead, and that a Minmatar Republic consisting of all seven united tribes will be impossible. [...]ö
Especially the second quote. Theodicy had more in it than I remembered. I guess I can play starting from that, at least somewhat.

Edited by: Elsebeth Rhiannon on 23/06/2008 19:20:07 There we go, thanks, Kady.
This starts to be offtopic here, so suffice to say I take back my whine in the above, and simply ask that if you people knew that definition all along, why did you listen to me whine about them not being properly explained anywhere until now?
Of course, that still leaves a lot of questions open, but the neat thing is they are open OOC the same way they would be open IC, so they will not stop me from playing.
Back on topic: Does anyone but me like the way how that chronicle pictured Shakor? Any disagreements / surprises on the picture by the folks whose hero Shakor has actually been in the past?

Yes, much happy, thank you. Of course I would still be happier if the exposition had been done properly by CCP to begin with but it is much, much better now, and most importantly, it just became playable for me with the Theodicy and that info combined. :)

somewhat after the fact but yeah, what i would have said is to re-read theodicy as it has the main things you asked for but Arkady beat me to it and linked the quotes which i vaguely remembered from reading but not so much that i could retell it from memory!
On point again, i like the additional insight into Shakor. Still need to get a book and read it but these extra snippets will help alot imho.

I actually tried but the darn thing is 160 some pages long and I just did not have the time to read it all and scanning it I missed the one crucial paragraph. Given that even people who liked Theodicy and knew the info was there were unable to actually give it supports my idea that the exposition on the whole Elder thing could have really been done better. Unless of course it was to promote TonyG, in which case I hope he's paying CCP and not the other way round.
Aaaand back on topic, I agree, these extra snippets help a lot. I am really looking forward to the other four. (Moar nao!) -- Help us defend the Republic; join Gradient today. |

I can only infer he meant that the people who the person is speaking for are now deceased and they would have been still willing to give up there lives for the cause, fate or whatever event that has happened to them for however high the stakes or how low the chances of success were.

Quote: Returning one day from the hunt, Shakor and his men were ambushed by the Amarr Royal Guard - universally regarded as the best fighting unit around. A fierce battle ensued. ShakorÆs men quickly formed a Spiral, the Royal Guard responded by forming an Arrow formation, designed to counter the Spiral. Despite their experience, ShakorÆs men panicked once their casualties began mounting and tried to retreat. They were hunted down and slaughtered to the last man by the Royal Guard.
That's what happened to the men in that battlegroup then.
