I think they're supposed i remember seeing it somewhere that the gates automatically track the connecting one for orbital variation.

They don't.
A few shortcuts were taken with the physics in order to create the gameplay that CCP wanted. For example, they wanted a mechanic whereby if you disable / drain a ship's energy and shut off its engines, the ship would stop.
Planets moving would mean stations would have to move with them, and that would complicate the database a lot (it keeps track of where everything is by x, y, z coordinates, which are fixed). And the benefits are minimal - imagine yourself in orbit on the Space Station for a year... the Earth changes with the seasons, but the rest of space stays pretty much the same.

Well, the gates don't even really need stars, they simply need the massive gravity well to make the singularity creation economical energy wise, for all practical purposes it could be a neutron star or black hole. They won't however because then entire systems would disappear and the forum would be flooded with (well deserved) whines of: "Wah! My character was sucked into the black hole/ My character was melted in the supernova/my character is stuck on a metaphorical island and there is no professor or movie star (for what ever you're into). Signatures are annoying...kinda like me. |

I think it mentions somewhre in the RP that it was the stars themselves that caused wormholes to exist, or that they only occured naturally near stars. I doubt then that there could be jumpgates in systems with no/dead stars (would they even be systems?). That being said, the RP mentions that jumpgate can only be built near binary stars, go figure.
But yes, one of the better troll threads I've ever seen.

Stargates: In EVE fiction, these are only allowed in binary systems.
That said, this presents a few problems. For example, the Sol system's star, commonly known by Terrans as the Sun, doesn't have a known secondary star, so the humanity wouldn't be able to escape the system (except by generation ships).
Also, no system ingame has an ingame second star, though technically it would be possible that it is just indistinguishable from the background of stars (a larger star binary with a white dwarf - though that'd be awfully lot of white dwarfs).

Technically this is a very wrong assumption, space is not that dark, the light from stars and the sun make it a very bright place actually, and since there are not solar system sized rocks blocking the light, it never gets dark.
Even in a system with a dead sun, it would still be far from pitch black, the light from billions of stars would still reach the system and illuminate it. The only place you may find complete darkness would be in the vast stretches of nothing between galaxies, but even that is debatable.
Not to mention the mistaken assumption that space is black, the ôhorizonö of space may be black but many areas with dust clouds and other celestial phenomena can in fact be very colourfull.

the question of moons orbiting planets orbiting a star in each system etc, was asked at the last fanfest .
it was explained that it was the intention it but this would constantly change the location of the moons and stations, making them harder to get to. let alone keep having to update the world coordinates of each planet/moon/station etc as (as far as i am aware) when you warp to a station, you do not warp to it, but to a set coordinate where that station is . if the coordinates kept changing to compensate for this, there would be a lot more data for the game client and servers to deal with . you want more lag ?
also this would have strategic consequences, for example where players deliberately create bubbles from warp in points to catch target en-route, would then be impractical . you'd have to have some way of anchoring a warp disruption bubble to a station or gate, for example or they would drift apart .

yes wendat, that very same dust can not block out light and make a system dark, for two very obvious reasons. 1. the light eminates froma 360 degree sphere so you would have to be inside the dust for it to block out any significant ammount of light. 2. if the dust becomes dense enough to completely block out light from any one direction, the gravitational forces of the dust molecules will most likely act on one another and cause them to form into combined mass. which in turn will make the dust cloud compact and block out even less light.

Eh its a SJ necro but who cares.
Its daytime on the side of your ship facing the sun and night on the side that isn't. Use your mouse to simulate the effect of the sun going down by slowly moving your ship to block out the sun.

Lots of systems have stars that look like they are on their last legs, Teonsnude for instance kinda looks like a white dwarf.
Yes but pitch black systems where the headlights on your ship actually come in handy for something other than inducing seizures perhaps?
/me signs on for nebulous systems with gas clouds limiting vision like fog, for the cool factor!
