I don't understand why so many people have such ire directed towards world of warcraft in EVE. I mean its understandable that being the biggest MMO, every other MMO is going to compare itself to them, but honestly, the way people reply to newbie criticism with condescending remarks that amount to "go play WoW you noob!" is quite off-putting. Usually such replies include such remarks about how the eve-community is so much more mature, which I find ironic. I don't view mature and intelligent people needing to bash other games and people who play them in order to feel better about themselves. This type of elitism is common among fans of certain rock bands, but for fans of video games it's absurd.
The fact is WoW is a very enjoyable game. The reason it is so popular is because it has a good blend of simplicity and depth. It does have major flaws, but it is not just a simple game for idiots and children as implied by many EVE fans. While there are many immature players and some very young players, the majority of people I ran into in my experience were in their 20's and 30's, sometimes older, and for the most part very nice and mature. It is really a completely different type of game than EVE, and I don't see why you can't enjoy both.

We resent that to describe EVE to non-players, we have to use the sentence "Like WOW but...".
Also because plenty of noobs come over from WOW and expect EVE to be super happy sugar fun land. ---

WOW is different in almost every way...
1)WOW is full of children. 2)WOW is cartoony as hell. 3)WOW is fantasy. 4)WOW has ALOT of servers. 5)WOW doesnt allow pvp everywhere(besides on the pvp servers I believe). 6)WOW involves almost 100% different tactics in pvp. 7)EVE can destroy wow with a smartbomb. 8)WOW promotes friendship....EW. 9)And lastly, WOW=ninjas and EVE=pirates.
Does that clear it up for you?

Doesn't mean they lack don't intelligence. EvE players are by no means as a whole more intelligent, but the more successful players need to be more so than the successful WoW players. Also GB2wow could just mean "eve is eve we like it this way if you want that go to wow."
Vaguely relative addendum: The more popular something is; the closer to 1 the probability of it being simplistic (not stupid) and not mentally engaging grows. IE: Internet Explorer, Windows, American Idol, reality tv, etc.

Edited by: DubanFP on 25/06/2008 05:05:31 It's a mix between the fact that EVE does cater to a much more mature/intelligent playerbase, and that every day we have to run into wow kiddies that think EVE should be as easy as WoW. They whine and complain about everything. They do something stupid that gets them killed or scammed then complain about it when CCP won't reimburse them.
Often they will come in and say crap about CCP and EVE being stupid, making threats of quiting, saying crap like "EVE loses most of it's accounts to scamming", making fun of the EVE playerbase as if they were the immature ones while completely failing to realize that he's one one losing out because he can't adapt.
We know not all WoW players are like that, but generally the people who are like that came from some pansy land where everything is handed to them and they can power level their way up the ladder. Eve requires intelligence and cunning to live in without repeatedly losing from your mistakes. Here the weak are weeded out and the term "Go back to WoW" isn't a term of malace as much as stating "You can't handle it here then go play a game that caters to your type. Don't **** about here make us have to listen to you whine about it because we don't care".
P.S. About the EVE players not being as intelligent on the poster above. Ask what the more sucessful EVE players in the OOTP or 0.0 do for a living. You'll find most of them work in computers or are going to college for computers. Yes, i'm a computer science major myself. _______________

the link pretty much sums everything up. Wow is everything opposite in eve, in the entirety of its gameplay. it is nothing like wow, at all, period.
you can get the hang of wow in 30 mins tops. you can survive there without effort or dedication. you can solo the entire game til endgame, pretty much, if you want. it'll take you two months to learn eve for the first time. only the dedicated can survive. its a cold, cruel, dark place. you can solo, but it hurts in the end. its lonely. and its, in my opinion, why eve is 10000000000000000000000000 million billion times better than wow.
this should compare the two: wow is a day at the beach. for everyone. fun in its own right. eve is a ride in a speedboat going 400 mph. only for those who aren't afraid. you need to be a bit twisted and unique to find it fun.
btw, i have played wow before, and do at times, they're both good in their own arenas. neither are for everyone. ôWhen a dove begins to associate with crows its feathers remain white but its heart grows blackö - Unknown.

I miss the original Jenny.
@ the OP: back in the day, around the time of WoW's release, the EVE-O forums were a much more mature, pleasant place to be (most of the time). EVE itself had a much smaller population back then, around 1/5th of what regularly logs on today; however, WoW serves as a gateway MMO, drawing in a large portion of the population and giving them one of their first online gaming experiences. Its only natural that some players, once their time there is over, want to find another game to play - of those people look at space games, EVE is the front runner.
When people arrive from WoW, their expectations and reality often don't match up, and instead of embracing the cold, dark world we live in, they complain about it. In their attempts to make it more friendly, like some WoW in space, they embrace PvE en masse (especially missioning), eschew PvP, and complain loudly at things like suicide ganking where they do not protect themselves, but rather rely on their magical protector CONCORD to defend them. In addition, its been noticed that the last two years since its came out, the number of smacker and idiots running around the forums and in-game has increased, and a lot of us vets like myself chalk that up to kiddies from WoW coming in here.
So, due to their attempts to change EVE in small increments, and the fact they generally annoy us, we resent WoW and those who associate with it.

I know why I hate WoW: While it IS a crappy game in several ways (dont get me started, even) that is not enough to warrant "hate".
Whats REALLY ****ing me off is everybody playing (and paying for) it. Clueless people all over the world think its actually good and then the next, most disgusting thing kicks in:
"But eight million people are playing it, surely they can't be ALL wrong?"
Whats the next step? Eat ****, because so many flies are doing it?

I do not like wow for some very obvious and simple reasons.
1: Graphicaly it is ugly as hell, when I was first looking at MMOs I wanted a game that would be fun and worth playing on my new pc...So I trialed a few, and settled with city of heroes. 2: It is ARCHAIC as hell.. The whole "leveling up" and doing instances thing is terrible..was allways terrible and defeates the purpose of havinng an mmo. To top it all, there is NO endgame content and yet people seem to think there is. The fact that "endgame content" figures so heavily in the community is an indication of why the game sucks...personaly I dont want an mmo I play to have an endgame. 3: Its gameplay is terrible. 4: I would rather play the warcraft RTS games, at least they were good. 5: Mostly I dont like its community. I am not saying the EVE community is better, but the community of WOW is terrible and it is immature and hateful. 6: Even Tabulas Rasa and RFonline are better...and they suck..

This question has long been a puzzle to me, and to be honest, I'm not sure we'll ever know. Although it's generalisable to the outside world, it's not an area that generates a lot of funding for studies. My personal theory is that it's due to an interaction between two effects: what's known as realistic conflict theory, and a type of effect that falls under terror management theory. Basically, I believe that mmorpg players understand that there is a finite player market. As players of game X, it is almost certain that membership of this group is a part of the players' personal identity. When another game is successful, the finite player pool threatens the game's survival, leading to increased in group cohesion (meaning members tend to mimic the opinions of others in the group in regards to the other game) and out group generalisation (eg. The traditional elitism displayed by eve players towards wow players)
The best part of this theory is that it explains two interesting phenomenon: 1- Why the wow forums smash competing games before release (eg GW, WAR) but are accepting of it after it fails to challenge WoW's dominance 2- Why the eve forums hate wow with a vengeance, yet have far more mixed opinions about similar, less successful games
