A special tractor beam that can lock onto small vessels and drag them in close and hold them, and even the ability to perhaps "scoop to cargo bay" pods and small ships from space as a sort of high-tech kidnapping for ransom thing.........with the requisite security penalties imposed for such behaviour, of course.
Truly, pirates regularly ransom their captives........killing them is always optional..........see the news about the coastline of Africa for example........
Not to mention the revenge possibilities against pirates by those they have accosted......
Just a thought for "realism sake"...........
Flame away.........

Edited by: Sopha Serpentia on 26/06/2008 15:19:04 Its an intresting idea but its unlikely that it will ever happen.
Mainly because you can already do what your suggesting by webbing and scrambling them. Moving another person ship around is another matter, it removes choice from the player and when you remove choice players get annoyed and stop playing. Even when a pirate comes and locks you down and randsoms you you are still free to say FU and get popped, after which you are free to get another ship and carry on what you where doing, albiet minus one ship.
What you suggest is essentially inprisoning someone in the game and while this sounds fun to do to someone, if you like kidnapping people and sticking them in dark sterile basement rooms so you can watch them on nightvision camera begging to be freed not that I've ever done that. Your removing choice and that is bad in a game.
On reflection I think this is more about your um...desires that an actual legitimate game design improvement. /me sidesteps quickly out of the room.

Well, there *IS* a simple solution to that "concern" as well.......and tht involves the as-yet-missing element of collateral damage..........for instance, you "kidnap" me in my pod or other small vessel, stashed securely away in your hold.......I should have the option of "self destruct" which would have the immediate effect of a massive hull breach on YOUR ship.
Naturally, I would perish, and I would have to weigh this decision against the cost of my own losses, but it would also force the kidnapper to consider the possibility of losing their own ship as well...........true risk/reward restored to the equation....and in a more perfect harmony than the existing scenario described above.
Imagine, two new "professions"........kidnappers, and professional assasins disguised as hostage victims...........
Perhaps, even with Ambulation, the kidnapee could be forced into indentured servitude at in-statin "pleasure palaces" and the like, as slaves.......
( Did a Gallente really just suggest that? )
The Amarr would be so into THAT aspect, I can assure you...........
Yes, I am a twisted individual human being..........

Sounds like you should design a kidnapping MMORPG

Fixed the topic.
Imho, the negative effects this could have clearly outweight the 'positive' effects.

Didn't I read in a dev blog somewhere that they were designing Ambulation specifically for this feature?

only if i can also lock onto gates and such and use the tractor to increase my speed towards the object. could work in reverse, too. a gate camp could pull someone away from the gate while bumping.

I like the idea but only if i can self destruct my pod and blow up your ship form the inside out, no defense to this sort of thing btw. |

Counter: People moving around in pods do so with implant free clones. Should they be kidnapped or about to, they simply pod themselves, wake up in their med clones, then go hunting for the attempted kidnapper if they so choose. |

Bad idea. Kidnapping someone and imprisoning them completely stops them from playing the game. Right now if someone camps you into a station you can at least get podded, even if at the cost of skill points if there's no medical, but you can get out and play elsewhere. If someone scrambled your pod and holds you you can at least self-destruct.
This idea allows you to completely disable another person's character and stop them playing EVE. It's the ultimate griefing tool and is genuinely gamespoiling. |

I do somewhat like the idea. One of the things that made criminal activity more dangerous in face of mankind (for those that tried it) was the idea that you could be taken prisoner, and there was next to no way to escape. You could pay (bribe, whatever), serve your time, or try and get rescued..
But there was no simple running away.
Of course the system could be abused, but there are ways around that as well.

Remember you can't be taken out of your pod, as soon as the pod's computer detects a hull breach it downloads and e-mails your brain to the new clone.
So, you want to risk me self destructing in your hold I'm game to let you haul me in. Provided it damages your ship when I boom.
With those two mechanics in game this would only really be a way to let friends haul each others pods arround.

I dont think anything besides expanded iteron mk 5s can put a fully assembled ship into their cargohold..
shuttles maybe..
but for example: an inty (ares) is 22500 m3
and some frigs are like 28k m3!!!!
yeah...
