Hi, I am relatively new to this game and a patient new player. I took the time to get my learning almost maxed out (all but perception). I also have looked into what skills are needed just to survive, run missions etc and have worked on those as well.
But I know that the pvp feature does not interest me as much. I have friends who do that and mining plenty - I want to be some kind of scientist/industrial character! However it is not obvious to me how to ideally go about this. The tutorial had some research but after that the missions all seem like "shoot this", "be a courier for this", etc. I don't get any practice at my intended specialty by doing day to day missions, so I don't have an in-game feel for what I should train.
I've read some guides and the forums but I need tips on absolutely essential skills for me to train in the areas of science/research/manufacture. What I don't want, for example, is to train for the manufacture of something that in the long run i probably won't be interested in manufacturing. So what should I train for the next month or two while I get my bearings and settle in on what I want to do more specifically? And how can I ease into this kind of career- is there a newb scientist help forum? Most of what I've found jumps right into the discussion on the assumption of a well-versed player.
So far I'm working on Science, Research, Laboratory Operation.
With completed missions, I hope to get enough isk for skillbooks like Industry, Production Efficiency, Scientific Networking.
But Yan Jung technology? It's skills like these that I don't understand. I want to steer clear of skills that may turn out to be unimportant to me as I get my bearings on a science & industry-type career.
Help, please. Thanks

Your question as asked is kind of impossible to answer, your focus needs to be narrower in order to give a good answer about what you should train. If your going to produce then production efficiency is vital to max. Science research and lab operations are for researching BPOs and such so if you arent going to do that then are probably unneeded. Scientific networking is for remote research (launching your jobs remotely to the station the BPO are in or to a pos in the same system as your corp office).
If you had an idea of what you want to do like I want to run hidden complexes - I want to invent tech 2 stuff - I want an alt to get data cores.
If your looking for the possibilities then there are many and it may take a bit to narrow your focus - look at the stickey that cover the different options and ask people in your corp or elsewhere. Most of the people in this forum that post would probably answer your questions if you can find them online and not busy.

Yan jung and other three 'bottom' science skills are used in COSMOS stuff building. You can skip them for a start quite fine.
As far as speccing in manufacturing and invention goes for a start production efficency, and number of labs and number of factory slots are most important to you. After you have those then it's slow climb towards versatility (invention, being able to build T2 and capital ships, some specific more skill intensive T1 items like cloaks and bubbles also perhaps). That is if you are interested in that kind of stuff. Just prod efficency lev 5 and 9 labs and 9 factories (+5 research agents) can also work out quite fine if you keep using missions as your main source of income.

I understand that my aspirations right now are a bit broad and vague. However, in another sense they are not (i.e. I am avoiding pvp, mining, trade, fleet command leadership, etc).
The game just doesn't give me a way to ease into science/manufacturing. The missions don't help with that and I don't see any basic/introductory faq's or resources for such a career (if there are, please send me links). I see walkthroughs and tutorials for all kind of other careers in eve, but not for science/research.
Maybe what I'm asking doesn't have a good answer. I know that people recommend certain core skills for someone who plans on using drones heavily, for someone who plans to trade extensively, and for someone who plans on fighting/pvp. The benefit of these kinds of skills is you can safely train them while you get your bearings on the game and settle more specifically on what you want to do. I see no such comparable 'essential basics first, then specialize more as you understand the game more' path for science and manufacturing careers.
Also I want to clarify that I do want to do both research and manufacture...so 'core skills' for both would be useful... |

Production core skills:
- Industry - Production Efficiency 5 (this is mandatory at 5) - Mass Production - Advanced Mass Production
Research core skills:
- Research (pe research or copy time decrease) - Science (pe research or copy time decrease, i always confuse these two) - Metallurgy (me research time decrease) - Laboratory Operation - Advanced Laboratory Operation
Fancy skills:
- Scientific Networking (remote research) - Supply Chain Management (remote manufacturing)
Datacore gathering: - Research Project Management - "Datacore science skill" of your chosen field
Invention: - racial encryption methods skill - "Datacore science skills" for your target item
T2 module / component production: - "datacore science skills" of your target blueprint
T2 ship production: - Frigate Construction (useful up to 5) - Cruiser Construction (useful up to 5) - Battleship Construction (only needed to 4) - Industrial Construction (only needed to 3)
Capital ship construction: - Capital Ship Construction
Outpost Construction: - Outpost Construction
There isn't really any guide, because with the exception of the remote skills and producion efficiency, every blueprints lists exactly which skills at which level you need and beyond that there isn't really much to skill. -- [17:47] <Mephysto> its dead, jim |

El'essar thank you - this will get me started while I figure things out more specifically. Thanks

El'essar certainly has given you a useful list for skills to learn. I would say your priorities should lie first in PE5, with diversions for maybe a racial Indy. You will find that you need to do some hauling to handle the logistics of building.
For better advice on how to do what you are hoping to do I recommend the Science & Industry forum.
I am following this path myself by the way. I don't shoot things, or people. I don't like hauling, and I'm not a trader either. I build things for a living, and yes I do some research to. I'm largely self-sufficient.
So I think what you want to do is perfectly viable. It's not going to be hugely profitable. But you can easily make enough over time to acquire the BPOs and skill-books you want if you work at it dilligently.
I'd love to talk with you about in-game sometime if you are interested. I have a lot to learn, and some things I could tell you if you don't know them already.
