Dude, if you pay attention, you'll see that no one died. But you sure have a strange way to speak about wounded human beings.
It gets better and better. Inquiries are concluding to an accident, born from a fairly severe breach of security procedures (the man had a live ammos clip in one of his pockets from a previous live-fire exercice), but our dear president, obviously more concerned about his image than about reality and trying to look like he was "Doing Something", and seeing here a perfect way to make the military pay for it's criticism of his white book (the part where he describes future's military program and funding, basically less logistics and more intel gathering), went into full bashing mode at the whole military service, causing the head of land-forces to resign in protest. He also decided to cancel the year's attribution of "Legion d'Honneur" awards to meriting officers, and ajourned the next batch of nominations to generals. ------------------------------------------

Maybe because we fire our weapons about a billion times more at targets than any other country on the planet?
If your country shot as many rifles, flew as many sorties as we have since WWII, I bet those stats would be different. It's not like we kill our allies our own troops on purpose. There may be criminal incidents, but I'd bet those are a very small minority.
Also, there was no media in WWII and sooner in wars like there is today, I'm betting there were tons of FF incidents in the colonial days, but most were probably kept secret.
This incident seems like a simple accident IMO.

I don't get that either. When I'm handling a gun, and I know it's not loaded, I don't point the barrel at anyone, not even if it's a silly pellet gun...
So maybe it was a pre-meditated thing.

Edited by: pwnedgato on 01/07/2008 20:46:52 As for America's high levels of Blue on Blue incidences I think it comes down to 2 things: First our obsession with close air support ( a good thing really) which still has a few kinks and second the Army just doesn't train for marksmanship right.

Edited by: Suze''Rain on 02/07/2008 00:08:20 my suspicion from what's been reported is that a "terrorist" is placed in the front row of the crowd so the audience gets to look at what's happening with it close-up, rather than a un-exciting "person standing at other side of arena brandishing a banana angrily is the terrorist" display.
The soldier seems to have used live-fire ammunition on a seperate display earlier from reports, and presumably failed to have signed the magazine back in. where the procedure fault is, if it was the soldier, the armourer, or another weak link in the chain, I dont know. Presumably in a hurried action, the soldier loaded the rogue mag at the next display - clearly assumed it was blanks, probably completely unaware that he even had a live magazine, and lets rip at the "terrorist" planted in the crowd, al according to the script that'd been played out 5 times already that afternoon.
Presumably the soldier is not expecting recoil from ammo, so a bit of a spread of fire, casualties are nonfatal, which indicates they were not targetted to the victims' heads or chests - 1 child was hit in the chest, but seems to be a lucky kid - (classic hit to kill ratio of 5.56 demonstrated there, by the way), a 1 second burst is appropriate for both the rifle ROF to approximate reaction time from fire to realisation of an accident.
In all, a simple procedure error failing to return a mag, and an accident as a result. No grassy knoll snipers, no crazed gunmen, just a plain, tragic accident.

Any force has Blue on Blue incidents, before also it would need to take into condsideration if they are weapons tight or weapons free (weapons tight only fire on verfied enemy targets, weapons free unknown/enemy targets are fired at).

It's more of a you do what you practise thing. I've been told that quite a few years ago a study found that soldiers who had been taught to aim off when firing blanks at live targets tended to subconsciously aim off during combat. Also, aiming off meant that they had little ability to take sight pictures, as they had only practised it at brightly coloured, unobstructed targets at set ranges. Thus, most armies, to my knowledge, now teach soldiers to aim properly at targets outside of 10m when using blanks (10m because a blank is still capable of wounding, and in some cases killing targets at around 5m, even with a bfa)

Heres a question, why the hell were they aiming weapons even if they thought they were blanks at a crowd in the first place?!
More of a Question I thought blanks looks different to live rounds? SO why has he not noticed this?
I mean In the UK u have big Yellow thingy on the end (Cant remember the name) which is used for blanks! Tho checking your ammo should be a main thing. Blanks are no harm unless your real close!
Feel sorry for those family! Tho in a way I feel sorry for the guy who pulled the trigger. I mean I wouldnt able to live with that my self! If i f*** up so badly!

i'm not a fancy pants expert on man-killing with assault rifles. when you switch out magazines after firing does a bullet stay in the chamber... then would it be possible that just the first shot fired at the event was a real bullet after switching to the magazine of blanks?

Yes, if a round is in the chamber, in some assault rifles, it'll stay there when you change magazine. However, this is why we're taught to be anal as hell when it comes to checking the chamber for rounds. To give you an idea, I once walked 10m with an assault rifle, and ended up needing to clear it 6 times. Also, I want to shake the hand of any man who can take down 17 targets with a single round.

It was the SA80A1...Don't know how many times the mag would drop out, once had the mag come apart (the UK built ones with the helpful button on the bottom to take it apart, went prone "SPANG" rounds all over the shop), magizine relase catch falling off...losing zero all the fecking time etc. During training we never did fire with the bayonet attached (tended to fly off apparently), Snapped the bayonet during bayonet drill (look on the armours face was Ummm intresting)...

Edited by: Yoshimako on 02/07/2008 23:33:00 And that ladies and gentlemen is why you never fire from a clip loaded by someone else at an exhibition. Mistakes happen but that is unforgivable.
Those saying about why he shot 17 people before he realised, as someone else mentioned the ammunition most likely fired would have been (i assume) FMJ so he likely only fired 4 or so rounds, in a packed crowd a number of people would have been injured by eqch bullet.
It could have easily been alot worse but fortunatly noone was killed. So easily avoidable (unless it was intentional on his part).

Whell considering what the SA80A1 replaced...which was basicly a semi auto FN-FAL, But they payed H&K for fixing the SA80 they could have sprung for the G36 (unproven in combat, but working better than the SA80).
So many good weapons to pick from and the SA80 is what they came up with, sigh... ========= "I am not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why can`t we just take the safety labels off everything and let the problem fix its self |
