So a couple buddies of mine have long thought about starting a corp and we now believe we are going to go off and do it, though it is not final.
I've long wondered what the keys to success are for running a corp.
Essentially our corp would: 1. Attempt to have an industry/mining sort of backing. 2. PVP actively, if it could be done in our area
So its PvP and Industry. We eventually plan to move out to 0.0. I am the richest of the three of us and have about 2.5b. I don't really want to lose it, as I found it particularly hard to come by.
So, tips? Anything is appreciated, from how to pick the area to build the corp to getting started in the new area to how to manage!

Have big goals. But focus in one area at a time.
You want pvp. Do some merc work, or war deccing alliances or corporations in empire to setup a base and get active members.
-Advertisement. Fraps and eve movies showing what you guys get upto is an ideal thing. Forums.
You want industry. Find a good home/base. Then find people localy perhaps in newb corps. invite them. They have nothing to lose by it. miners etc.
Give incentives. IE. pvp loot evenly spread with members. Or mining ops etc, every one gets a fair share.
Be a good boss. Give your members what they want. have votes on which way your corporation should go next.
If all else fails, merge with other small corps. Rince and repeat. |

Use your 2.5 billion to buy a couple of hulk altchars. Have your corpies do the same. Using these hulk altchars work as a team until everyone in the corp has at least two (or as many as their pc will support).
This will always give you enough of a backbone to succeed financially and logistically, and with the right logistics you will go far.
Recruit sparingly, but the right people and rinse repeat this process with them. Remember 4 people running two hulks each will buy a new hulk pilot every three to four hours. Two days work and a new player will be set for his eve life - if you hire the right people they will apreciate this and stick with you.
Use this ability to carebear once a week and you will have enough money to pvp for the rest of the week. Hire people who play a lot and have been in the game a while, dont think skillpoints and shiptypes, think participation and attitude.
When you have reached approximately 15 people you will now have the ability to produce 1.5 bil an hour for the corp. Using this you will be able to purchase a capital alt char every 4 or 5 hours and buy a capital ship every hour.
With this backbone you can now start to recruit heavily, investing in free ship programs, helping your members out and easily get to the 40 - 70 member range. If you chose in this time to help with the hulk route then ofc go ahead, but you will find at this amount of people you will start to lose members once you have. Do it sparingly and with the right people.
Ofc all this is dependent upon having the right space to live in, but atm in renter culture thats not a problem.
There are three real important rules in this process:
1) ALWAYS keep pvping and ALWAYS have mains that are training to be effective with each other. Correct fleet makeup wins fights.
2) ALWAYS make sure that someone can earn more with the corp than by leaving and / or stealing. Corp assets should be minimal and segmented.
3) Make it a corp requirement that you base around a station, everyone has a jumpclone set to that station and everyone has either the skills for the fleet ships you provide or their own fleet ships ready. If you have 30 in corp chat you should regularly test your ability to have 70% of that muster and be ready in a ship to go within 15 minutes.
If you can follow this then I think you should be successful as a corp in eve. If your thinking alliance then if i were you once you get to the 60 or so people i'd segment the original 15 into three lots of 5 with 20 of the members each and build up that way. You know that they have a backbone and culture the same as yours and will always be able to perform as you do. |

So, tips? Anything is appreciated, from how to pick the area to build the corp to getting started in the new area to how to manage!
You need to ask whats in it for your members. 99% of corps who "Attempt to have an industry/mining sort of backing" and occasional pvp are fancy terms for Carebear style corps who basically suck people in with the promise of riches, but end up boring players out of eve since 99% of their time, they are simply warping from belt to belt killing unscripted NPC's while their leaders are pretty busy building themselves trophy supercaps. A lot of people who quit eve did so because they found eve boring because of this.
Industry is not refining rat loot or mining or even building a drake from a ME30 5-run bpc copy you picked up in jita. Once you work out what industry really is, then you can plan that route. Some of the best real industrialists are pvpers (for most people, it is about getting isk for pvp or pvp related objective, rather than isk for isk's sake).
So simple answer is this. What is fun in eve? Find something you define as fun and then find likeminded people. If fun is mining veldspar, then great. If fun is shooting the guy mining veldspar, then great. If fun is Greifing people, then great. If fun is 0.0 cloaking isk farmer style of play, then great. If fun is Role Playing corps, then great. etc etc
Thats the question what your corp should do first. Then plan the design of your corp around it. If you do not know what fun is, or do not know how to find and manage likeminded people over your definition of "fun", then you are not ready to start a corp. --

1: focus on one of them. If you decide to pvp, have an alt in high-sec empire to mine or run missions if you need isk (you probably will)
2: Be a leader. Don't discuss or vote much as this is very time consuming. Those who like what you do will follow, the rest would not work much towards your goal anyway. (A leadership trio or something is ok - but don't discuss in public)
3: Ventrilo or teamspeak should be mandatory in pvp - and also to get to know your mates better.
4: Make sure you have fun |

Pretty much this but to add to this:
-learn how roles work, learn how not to get scammed out of everything -don't be stupid, don't be an insufferable**** to your members -don't have a council. You decide, nobody else. |

1. start a recruitment thread 2. lay out what you can do for people. 3. Actually do it.
- If pvp is your main point of focus make sure its readily available at all times. It keeps people coming back.
- Only have the corporate programs that you can afford. Tax at 10% is usually enough with a moderate sized corp (50 members) to do basic ship reimbursements, fuel a pos, and rent 5 moderately priced offices.
- Make a website, forums, and have a corp killboard.
Lastly, keep up your presence. I've seen corps with inactive leadership, they dont work.

My best friend and I wanted to start a corp, just for the sake of learning how to do the corp related things within the game. We have had that corp running for over a year now with our alts.
We raised our standings within Caldari space so we could put a POS in a .5 system. This didn't take long, but if you are going to invest in a POS with all the goodies like SMA and CHA, then you might want this in empire for now to be safe and to learn how to run it. Next, we setup regular mining and ratting and mission ops in order to maintain this POS. It will cost you quite a bit, somewhere to the tune of 100-200m isk a month depending on how much you mine and how much you buy for it.
It is great practice, although some here may disagree since we 'carebeared' our way into empire .5 space with missions and such. Just don't be in too much of a hurry, do ALOT of research on the web and with people in game that are willing to help with constructive criticism instead of useless insults.
Good luck to you....

have you ever considered joining into a corp that is doing/going where you want to go/do?
