iirc we had a thread on this forum that did very strongly hint at the "scam" a few weeks before crucible launch.
then we had another MD thread about it shortly after crucible launch changed the mechanics (and made some people think that faction prices had dropped significantly).
by now this is old news. /bittertrader
No, that thread existed, except the guy who made it presented it terribly.
The guy who made it was one of kwark's competitors, who made it after kwark made a move on his market. |

It seems a bit self-important to be calling this a "scam".
What these people have done is profit from the laziness of other players who couldn't be bothered to wait for a better deal.
You might as well be moving skill books to mission hubs, and call that a "scam" because they can be bought cheaper elsewhere.
Nonetheless, congratulations on the profits, and thank you for artificially inflating the price somewhat, allowing me to move some higher value mods with very little trouble. |

Well it was not realy a scam, it was just what every good supermarket around your corner is doing too. They place the higher priced stuff right before your eyes and when u would just turn your head a bit up and down you would be able to find the same stuff a lot cheaper. In eve the contract system just made it a bit harder to turn your head ... and some people simply didn-¦t even knew how to turn it :p |

as someone who switches between contract age and contract price very regularly, i thought this was just some random poor attempt at altering buyer perception, i had no idea so many people bought at the oldest price. it indeed tells you a bit about the 'consumer base' in eve :D
congrats on your success!

My conclusion, market forces have absolutely no connection with anything in EVE. Stuff just happens, people are lazy and clueless, perception of value massively outweighs any relation to the work or cost of making something.
A market is depending on information and you used the lack of information to your advantage. Congratulations.
Btw. you mentioned opportunistics costs and this factor is sometimes more important than most of us can imagine. Combined with the lack of information it gives a good opportunity to make a huge profit. But this has nothing to do with lazyness.

As may has pointed out OP has made a fortune on ppl lack of research on how the contracts used to work. was dabbling with this for a while myself,(after beeing the one who bought the oldest contracts for a while) and hundreds of Sister expanded probe launchers has made me a decent 14 day cycle profit
The scale of this operation though is pretty epic. *applauds

Hey now, I overlooked the (painfully obvious, in hindsight) requirement that contracts be 14 days long and so it never worked very well for me, ok!
I mean it still makes me dumb, I just want to clarify the dumb. |

I've watched this happen on all the high-volume contract items for a while - I assumed more people knew how it worked and a lot of people were doing it, never realized how few people were manipulating the prices... so what are the plans for that trillions of ISK? This isn't a scam since no one was misrepresenting their side of the transaction (say advertising a domi on contract as a fed navy domi). Those people buying cal navy bcs did so because that module was worth at least $165 million to them. They just didn't know that "fair market value" was much lower than that and that they could have had those modules for less.
In my view, it is more properly a market manipulation which creates a lucrative information asymmetry for certain buyers. |

I really enjoyed the read and even though the final act is no longer possible, I am more interested in breaking into that ISK/LP business that he was doing before the swap.
Sadly at my current market knowledge level, my Brain just can't seem to wrap itself around some of this stuff. Maybe either not wired as good as some market/acct style folks or I am just not seeing the starting point properly.
If my calculations are correct though I have a chunk of LP that needs converting (Fed Navy) and could use a tinsy bit of guidance on how to make the most of it if anyone would be willing to lend a hand.
I understand a lot of what to do, but something just isn't clicking and it is really ticking me off. If I helped you out, Technical Issue,-áenemy gank, popped your poor fit,-áhit the "Like" button. |

KwarK alt: FN LP is pretty much worthless. You need to either make a spreadsheet of LP items from different stores to contact someone who has put the time in and simply sell your LP to them. There are LP stores out there with bulk conversions at easily 2-3 times the value of FN. If you contact my friends in the corp Every Day Low Prices they'd be happy to tell you which LP they're willing to buy and at what prices, they'll be taking a cut for their work on spreadsheets ofc but it's still an awful lot better than not knowing where to start and missioning for FN. |

Kudo's for such an elaborate operation, scamming hundreds of players without them realising it.
You Definitely deserve a Cookie! :)
And no, this is not me being sarcastic, this is really me applauding a well worked out scheme. it's not very often we see a really 'good' scam anymore. ( aka, one that takes me more than 10 seconds to figure out )

I also don't have the hardware to run more than two clients at once. I'm not exactly sure how I'd bot this, also if I had a bot listing contracts for set prices at set times the opposition would have massacred me. |

Heh. this reminds me of my prime days in EVE.
It's actually hard to find profitable operations like this. Sure, it's meta-gaming at its finest, but this sort of thing happens in real life as well.
