I recently upgraded my PC with a new graphics card to run the premium content package. I've got an older AMD 939 dual core, so my options for upgrading my x1650 were pretty limited. The AGP based 3850 seemed to fit the bill. It runs great with everything else, except eve. I've run the ATI drivers from 8.3 through 8.6 with little difference except the newer drivers appear to be more stable. I get a system crasher, not blue screen, but a reboot! It occurs most often when I go through gates. Occasionally I'll get the ATI VPU recovery message and I can get back in the game. I used to crash out in the first hour or so, not it seems to take 4 hours before I'll get a crash going through a gate.
Any advice aside from "Buy a new PC with PCIe" is appreciated.

You have "Reboot on crash" disabled so you can read any BSODs, right?
Spontaneous reboots could indicate a weak or faulty power supply unit, is is "up to spec's"?

Looks to me as a PSU fault or the Radeon is overheating (VPU Recover)
Clean the PSU (too hot PSU also looses power) and check if u can improve the Airflow inside your Case...
your PSU should have atleast 450W (Named PSU) or 550W (OEM PSU)
Also its a good idea to build a case fan to blow over your gfx card fresh air from the outside... (mountet in sidewall) this will help the card stay cool :)

I am having the same issue with PCIe 3850.
The game runs fine for an hour or so then starts playing up with the error "The display driver has stopped responding and has recovered"
There is no dust in the PC and the cooling is to AMD specifications http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/23794.pdf page 26. I also have an additional fan on the side of the case blowing on to the 3850.
TBH i think it is an EvE specific issue as the problem has got a lot worse now that i am running dual screen with 2x clients @ 1280*1024 windowed.
I do not have problems with any other games.

What PSU do you have, in detail? Any BSODs or just the error message you mentioned?

This problem is created by the high GPU usage of EvE... like FurMark does... your GPU reaches Temperatures above 90¦C so it becomes unstable and need to be recovered...
u can work against this in 4 ways :
1 :
Create a Overdrive Profile...
open the profile locatet in : User//Appdata//local//ATI//ACE profile.xml
edit the following :
<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0"> <Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Automatic" /> </Feature> <Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0"> <Property name="Want" value="0" /> </Feature> <Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0"> <Property name="Want" value="34" /> to <Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0"> <Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" /> </Feature> <Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0"> <Property name="Want" value="0" /> </Feature> <Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0"> <Property name="Want" value="63" />
with 63% RPM the card stays way cooler as before and the noise is still acceptable...
2: Edit the cards BIOS with ATI Bios Edit (Computerbase.de created Tool) and create new RPM Profiles depending on the Temperature... 10% higher on every steb as original will help.
3: Replace the Stockcooler by a bigger one... like the Accelero S1 rev 2.0 or the VF900Cu
4: Improve the Airflow insinde your Case... place Casefans to blow over the card and also place fans to push inside and pull outside (front push, back pull) to create a nice airstream inside your case... all your components will benefit :)

Edited by: VicturusTeSaluto on 06/07/2008 20:49:24 Stop with all the basic troubleshooting, it is a waste of time. You need to keep asking CCP to fix this well-known issue. No matter how many times you go over all the diagnostic steps, there will still be an issue with this game and these cards- until CCP fixes it. There are many other threads about it, such as:
thread 1 thread 2
It seems to affect the entire 38xx series. I have yet to see any indication that newer or older series are similarly affected.
The only advice I can offer is to run in fullscreen mode, windowed mode seems to make it unable to do a VPU recover.

I run a 3850 too... never had any issue... because i got a VF900Cu GFX-Cooler on it...
its summertime and the ATI 3850¦s cooler is not the best one so it can overheat... just run FURMARK and you will see the same effect...
its not ccp¦s fault.

It has NOTHING to do with cooling. This happens ONLY in eve and it happens ONLY around gate fire in the game. I'm playing newer and more gpu demanding games all day without EVER crashing. Gpu temps are normal. I can run age of conan on full grafics ALL DAY without my gpu crashing in a warm room. You're either making things up or youre lucky that yours doesnt crash for some odd reason. This is not something we are making up, this IS a ccp programming mess. There is no way around it because it is TRIGGERED by something in the game (gate fire). I have petitioned it and they havent been able to help me. They have even agreed to reimburse my ship loss because of this bug. I had even had ccps debugger run in the background to prove the crashes that were occuring. ----------------------------------------- [Video] I'm a soldier, so remember the name |

Now im sure it was really hard to tweak the resistances and turret hardpoints.

Edited by: Maxamillian Kage on 09/07/2008 11:27:38 Ugh. Well thanks for the input. As for the rundown, I've got a 650W "named" power supply which is fine and the GPU never gets above 57deg C as I've got good cooling. I run all kinds of other, more demanding games and don't have ANY issues. Temps are higher, but still no issues. I've even put it in non-premium mode and it still exhibits the same problem. It looks like there is an issue with eve, and the ATI drivers. I put an older x1650 back in the machine, and my problems disappeared. I'm just going to wait until CCP figures this one out. |

Still, have you turned off "reboot on crash" and verified if there was a BSOD that caused the reboots mentioned in the first posting?

What does this have to do with anything? We are all running with several hundred watts overkilled systems. How can you explain that eve DOESNT crash when I have a 100 vs 100 fleet fight outside a station with all effects on and zoomed camera but it crashes by a couple of gate fires in an empty system. You cant explain that with anything except ccp bogus programming bugs. ----------------------------------------- [Video] I'm a soldier, so remember the name |

Geeez, why can't you lot just answer a simple question!!! I'm not a bit interested in fleet battles and such and when EVE is not crashing, I WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE FARKING BSOD IS SAYING!!!
*nearly hitting monitor with fist*
Now, is it that hard? Why avoid answering simple questions?
The issue with missing Blue Screen Of Death can easily hold the answer.

Yes, they told me "go bug report it" = send all the info I gave the GMs to a bug report. Why the **** should I do that? The GM has ALL the info (everything from debug info to crash time stamps from my pc), he can friggin do it himself. He even basically admitted this being a bug because they reimbursed a ship i lost from this bug eventhough they had no proof serverside for exactly that ship loss in question. ----------------------------------------- [Video] I'm a soldier, so remember the name |

Good. With that atitude you're getting all the help you deserve. I don't think these forums should be the "first line of support" as to speak, that is what petitions and their escaletion is for.

Uhm, it is this petition system that has told me to do this and that when I already supplied them with all the darn info they needed. And yeah, I pay their salaries I expect something in return.
