Just wondering from folks who fly both, if you have them tanked the same way, will they both be roughly the same. Reason I ask this is because my Golem can solo all the L4 missions managing aggro. I have just cross trained into the Vargur and am wondering if if will need more/less or similar tank to the Golem. I check the default resistances and both are roughly on par.
Thoughts folks? |

I didn't have trouble with either one. I was running 2 Invs and a T2 Large booster, I think, and was able to tank some of the harder Sansha missions.

i'd go with a varg, as more of the DPS it puts out is actually received by the targets.
A tanked golem probably has no TP's which means lower DPS from torps (cruisegolems please self destruct.)
Golems are absolutely awesome if you fit them with TP's and use a logi ship to top off the shields.

A standard 2-3 TP golem is ultra powerful and has plenty of local tank for missioning (though a 3 TP setup requires excellent skills). Vargur is more fun to fly for me since there's no TP handling and damage application is instant. |

As good and informational the replies have been, they are heading off topic a bit. I am asking about the tank, not about DPS application and the like.
Are both tanks on par with each other with similar defensive modules.?

The two ships have identical capacitor regen. A well-fitted golem will be burning anywhere from 5-8 GJ/s on target painters. A Vargur will burn about 1.5 on tracking computers. Their resist profiles are similar, with the Vargur's being better against EM and the Golem's being better against thermal. If the Vargur does choose to sacrifice a tracking module for extra tank, its performance will be less impacted than the Golem.
The Vargur should have a very marginally stronger tank, owing mostly to fewer drains on its capacitor. In practice, you shouldn't notice much difference. |

For level 4's the difference in tank is irrelevant. They can both easily tank them. |

Similar tank for most purposes. You should be able to get away with a little bit less tank due to the Vargur having more useful resists (i.e. EM shield resist), smaller sig (425 v 575,) being able to kill faster than the Golem (gank is tank,) and requiring less multi-tasking than the Golem (less likely to mess up a trigger while juggling TPs.)
Generally speaking, it's hard to screw up with a Vargur.

Thanks for pointing out the signature radius. Can't believe I forgot that.
And yeah, the Golem's utter inability to snipe tackle frigates means that it's more reliant on drones to protect it. The Vargur does not have this weakness. |

What kind of rats are you facing? The Vargur is very nice against angel rats but if you are up against gurista f.x then a golem propably would be better(although both would suck because of the jamming) but the vargur/mach shines when the targets come rather close. In the case of gurista that won't happen and you will end up either shooting your tagets in somewhat deep falloff or chasing them. both will cut in bounties and mission completion times. by the way. There is no high damage kinetic ammo for minmatar so again (especially) guristas vil become a problem in that case. ofc. you can use barrage but its not optimal.
guristas=don't bother with vargur. Anything else= go for it |

My mach kills Gurista BS with 4 shots, kinda like every other NPC BS in the game. Test signature....forum not applying settings :( |

I fly both, they both tank like beasts, but the vargur is so much faster at killing everything. |

Vargur is fine for Guristas rats. Optimal + falloff works out to be around 80km, while the guristas orbit at 40-50km |

Don't bother with any marauder since you'll be jammed for minutes at a time.
Well, maybe a Kronos with its drone bay wouldn't be bothered too much by this. |
