I will be buying a new computer soon and I want to make sure I can run premium content on it. I remember when the primo client came out there was an exe file from CCP you could run to test if your box could handle it. Can someone point me to the thread with that link in? (tried the search box, tried google)
For reasons far too involved to go into here I am after a laptop that can run Eve Premium content, anyone got one they can recommend? I plan to use a docking station etc.
Long story short I need to buy a laptop, I would also like to get a PC that can run premium content, I want to try and kill two birds with one stone.
Thanks in advance for your help.

http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=646016&page=9#264 was the post I found it linked from.
BTW, you'll find Eve Search works a LOT better for finding such things than the on-site search bar :)

To be able to use the premium content you will need a graphics card that supports Shader Model 3, a format most new graphics card already support.
The program to check for SM3 can be found here
Hope that helps.

Awesome, thanks guys. So a mid-high end laptop running primo Eve isn't such a far fetched idea then?
Nice =)

I recently puchased an 14" HP laptop (mid range, about $800 CAD).
It has 3GB ram, windows vista and (improtant!) a 128mb dedicated video card (a Nvidia 8600 GO).
In premium client I get about 40-50 frames a second, nice and playable, though I tend to run it in the classic client for around ~80FPS (well above my moniter refresh rate).
I'll dig up the specific model number when I get home, the version up from it (15.4" screen, 256MB card) was about only $200 CAD more expensive, and would undoubtedly run EVE premium at over 60fps. ***** Rule 27: 'Don't be afraid to be the first to resort to violence.' -The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Pirates [schlockmercenary.com] |

I just bought and Acer TravelMate 7720
2ghz dual core 2gb mem ATI mobility raddeon 2400 (dx10, and with good base mem (200-something)) 17" wide
Downsides: its a bit large & heavvy, gets pretty hot (70 degs) with warm weather, battery life
Upsides: has all the gadgets, business model - so functional and sturdy, works like a desktop pc, still comes with XP.
costs: 'bout Ç 600,-

Dell XPS 1730... SLI cards only work smoothly in fullscreen mode though. Pros: The 1920x1200 resolution on a 19' screen works pretty good in eve. Really nice FPS and good performance with eve.
Cons: Pricey, and batterylife when running eve with SLI is 40-60mins. LARGE (19' screen does that to you) and HEAVY (about 5kg).
The alienware laptops seems nice too.

I have a Dell XPS 1710. Despite the fact that the Laptop is 1,5 years old, I can run the premium client at 1920x1200 and good performance.

Um...that test only verifies that the graphics card recognises the command. It doesn't test how long it takes to execute the command.
Given a textbook, calculator and pen and paper I could probably claim to support SM3. I wouldn't recommend asking me to render a frame from the game though
You want to be buying a moderately expensive laptop I would suggest - better yet go for one that someone else is already using -- (Sarcastic mission running veteran, 4+ years)

Thanks guys, keep 'em coming. In a perfect world I'd buy a desktop for gaming and a lappy for work but it ain't a perfect world. Please keep mentioning any problems your laptops have running Eve. I will be using a docking station so monitor, keyboard / mouse won't be an issue.
GFX card and other specs too if you could, in case I have to go for a custom job.
Thanks.
