Have just bought an Iteron Mark III with visions of mining vast wealth heading my way, however.... Although it has 2 high slots I can only fit 1 mining laser - I guess you need 2 hardpoints as well ? No prob I thought, I will get some mining drones... oops drone capacity is zero. So my question is - is there anything I can do to modify this ship to either allow an extra mining laser or put in some mining drones ?

an iteron is used to move things, not mine.

all industrials only have one turret point and zero drone bay. theres nothing you can do to change this. as was just stated, they are for hauling, not mining.

You can either afk mine for a few hours...days, or you can get with a couple corp-mates who have big ships (like battleships) and collect their cans. --------- Kitten Hearder Evolution made my sig Less Entertaining than your's. |

Edited by: x01A4 on 20/05/2004 07:51:58 Man!! I just did that same thing. I worked very hard to raise my skill so I could get a Mark II. I thought sense it had such a big hull and I saw a few out mining in some fields, that it would be a good mining ship. Well I was surprised as you were, to find out it only holds 1 mining laser and no drones...
But itÆs not a complete loss. What I ended up doing was mining like crazy with my Mark II while I worked up my skill points to get a Thorax. Now that I have my Thorax, I use it to mine (you can equip 5 mining lasers and it has a large drone bay) and then when IÆm done IÆll head back to my station and get into my Mark II. Then I fly out to get my ore and I become my own personal huller.
Next Mining ship I think will be a Dominix. Just a few more skills above the Thorax
Works out great!

Sounds like a plan - will try the same thing myself.

Thorax is indeed an excellent mining ship. You have three options with it:
1 - Heavy combat drones x8 - makes solo mining in anything except 0.0 easy and sweet. Lots of expensive roids out there, just watch your hauler as you go back unprotected to collect it.
2 - As many Basic Mining drones as you can pilot - VERY quick and easy mining in 0.9 or 1.0.
3 - A mix of Combat drones and mining drones. This can be used to mine in 0.5 to 1.0.
One suggestion though: stagger your mining lasers. If they all start (and finish) at the same time you will not have the cargo capacity to haul it all in and you will loose ore.

You should not mine in an industrial ship. Instead, find yourself a nice quiet system and use your frigate to mine. Jettison the ore into an unsecure container. Open that container aswell as your hold and simply drag the ore into it. When you have an amount your industrial can haul, fly back to station, switch to your industrial and pick up your ore. A frigate with 2 to 3 lasers and a few mining drones will advance your funds much quicker than mining in an industrial. Although there are ore thieves out there, I have only ever met one in nine months of the game. Also buy a Vexor before you get the Thorax, that too will speed up your progress. Happy mining!

what he means it that if all 5 mining lasers finish at once, that is more ore than the entire cargo hold on a thorax if you have the right skills. I run into the same thing using a stabber (i am minmatar and have not trained for a thorax) I run 4 mining lasers and with 420 cargo I can only get through one complete cycle of the mining lasers, after than I would lose a good part of the next cycle (60sec of mining time) as my cargo hold will not hold all of it. You can figure the numbers out by looking at the laser info. I think at base skills, the miner 2 pulls around 60 units of ore each minute. that is 60m3 of ore not 60 veldspar or scordite. at four lasers for me that is 240m3 every minute so that 420m3 of space does not last long. I think on the thorax the cargo is even smaller so the 300m3 a set of 5 miner 2s can pull will not fit in cargo.

Yup ... sure do Salek
If you fire your mining lasers off one at a time with a 10 second gap in between each you are fine. You do need to pay constant attention though otherwise your hold will fill up real quickly and your miners will drop offline. Do not start this procedure if you do not have a full capacitor otherwise you will also run out of energy. Its a good idea to have some sort of cap charger along with all your extra CPU boosters.
Glad to help, please ask any questions you like

I did this on purpose. It's called AFK mining. Get a miner II and fit it to that industrial and go to a .9 or 1.0 system and find the biggest veldspar rock you can and put your miner on it then walk away from the computer. Come back in a few hours and fly your ship back to the station and then back out to the field again. I'd set it up when I got home, empty the ship before I went to bed, and empty it again before I went to work. I was pulling in about 1.2 million per day doing afk mining.
Then my friend started mining with me and we bought a couple of ospreys for 2.2 mil each and with 3 mining lasers on each we quickly had enough money and bought Moas, since we are both caldari. Now we mine in .5 space and ship our ore out to 0.0 space to sell to guild and alliance mates. Once we both have 1.5 million skill points or so we'll head out there too and start mining in 0.0 space.

Im mining in a thorax and i have no problem with activating all the miners II's at the same time, my setup is 3 CO-Processors I's, 5 Miner II's, 1 Expanded Cargohold I, 1 Type-E Altered SS Expanded Cargo, 2 Named Capacitor Rechargers(don't remember their names)and 5 Hammerhead's. Though i dont have the astrogeology skill so i only pull in 72 m3 per miner (360 for all the miners and the cargohold is 370 something) |
