This is always such an amazingly obtuse viewpoint to take on this. Say you were looking to get into one and was curious what the actual cost would be, and how that equipment might be utilized? Translation: whether it's even worth it isk-wise or time-wise for you to even bother going for a capital, for example? The guides will be a good.. well... guide for someone who's possibly aspiring to go in that direction.
Or another way of putting it, the % of people in EVE who look at capitals and expensive faction ships and might possibly want to be in one is vastly higher than the % of people who think it's useless to write a guide about them. :)

You know all those idiots who pay $20 more for a game to get a shiny box, an action figure, and a cloth map?
Those are the people EON is aimed at. It's for Eve fans, not the general public. So it doesn't have ads, has smaller print runs, higher costs.. blah blah.. at the end of the day CCP knows their fans, who the magazine is *for*, will cough up the change.

I have to admit i have just cancelled my subscription, there really isn't anything worth reading in it anymore, although some of the recommended setups are often good for lulz.

If I were to pay for an expensive magazine, it would be the economist. $60 for 4 issues or $90 for a years worth of high-quality news...hmm.
That said, I would GLADLY subscribe to E-ON if I could trade game time cards for an E-ON subscription.

Does posting on the forum help to change the price of an item? Is there some forum power I'm not aware of?

I would like to see a small price reduction. I would be more inclined to buy 2 of them or a sub if that was the case.

A few already mentioned this but, if they receive no revenue from selling ad space in the magazine, it makes perfect sense to charge what they do. Printing is not cheap. Even something that seems trivial, such as the gloss varnish on the cover, means an extra plate on a press which is not cheap. The OP is right in one statement and that the low print run. The smaller the print run, the higher the printing cost per unit. This really is niche magazine with a much smaller print run than a mainstream magazine. So again, not cheap to print. I'm betting they are probably breaking a little above even per printed magazine.
They definitely are offering a good-quality magazine reserved for Eve fans. I plan to subscribe once I finish closing on my house.

Dear sir, let me introduce to a scanner and a copy of doPDF. i.e. within about 5 minutes or so of someone holding the magazine in their hands they could quickly be ripping it off, copying it, and sharing it.
Think about the consumer for a minute - I'd rather for a low price click a few buttons and my officially purchased version downloads to my computer, transferred via email to my Ipod Touch so I can read it while mobile, and I'm happy.

I have purchased a few EON mags. I really enjoy them. My problem is not so much with the cost of the magazine. I would pay 55 bucks for the subscription but with shipping that jumps to like 80 dollars.
I am not willing to spend 80 for 4 mags just for a few good stories.
I wish they could setup a distribution center in us just so we don't have to pay the shipping charges.
OR come out with a pdf version.

Yes, I think a porsche is also overpriced and the 200 feet long luxury yacht is also way too expensive!!
I suggest they lower their prices to $10 respective $100, so that almost everyone can afford it. That would be only fair enough!
Hmm, or you just don't buy it if you think that something is not worth it or if you cannot afford it. Simple? Well, obviously not simple enough for some people!

And when they are able to sell a totally digital download version of the Porche but refuse to then they'll be those of us who'll not buy the physical one because it's more expensive.

Well several of us have already said we aren't buying and have stated reasons. It's ok for us to state our opinions on how we could make the E-ON producers more $$ and give better customer satisfaction though - especially if we're doing it constructively.

If E-ON offered cheaper PDF versions to download, I'd probably give it a go.
As it stands now, it's just to expensive to buy and ship things. I think $5 USD per digital issue is plenty reasonable and shouldn't take to much effort to set up. That would potentially bring in hundreds if not thousands of people who are on the fence.

I mean your expressions of supposed insight are only also effective as expressions of power over newbs if the insights are clear to everyone else and not to the newb. If they are really obvious to everyone involved, however, then the comments are just simply redundant.
I've been getting so much attitude lately within eve just for raising issues and asking questions, in forums or help chat for example, it's been really discouraging. It would be nice if people employed more of a principle of charity and conversed more amicably, instead of assuming that they are guardians of everything that should be obvious and that the new eve initiates exist to say stupid things and get shot down.
I completely agree with you. It's almost impossible to engage in any kind of meaningful discourse without being subjected to insults and flames, no matter what the topic. That said, I think if you want to still attempt to have these discussions you need to kind of ignore the one-liners and insults and keep an eye out for the meaningful responses.
As for EON, yeah the price seemed a bit steep to me too so I haven't bothered to pick it up, however I think the hardcore fan is willing to pay it and that seems to be the market they are catering to.
I'd love to see a PDF version myself.

I agree with the posts about the "roll your eyes" type replies. Fanboys are so annoying. They are against any sort of criticism, when criticism is what improves products.

I agree that the current price is about what one should expect for the the lack of advertising and the shiny quality of the publication. Additionally, I agree that the price is a bit high for most people to afford, especially with shipping added. Love the idea for pdf/digital sales.
Would people buy the paper magazine if the interior was black and white or greyscale on matte pages and the cost went down to around $10 per issue? I believe I've seen other niche/scholarly publications of about the same size in that format for that price. $10 per issue would be more attractive to me, but I'm not really interested in the pictures, though it is a very pretty mag.

Edited by: Quetl on 09/07/2008 12:44:04 Digital distribution would take research -
Simply lowering prices so more people buy does not = more profit. It'd depends on the PED of the item.
Also need to factor in how many subscribers of the magazine swap, which could result in higher prices for those of us who want the glossy goodness - forcing us to digital or simply not buying at all. So digital distribution also needs to consider XED - Also Eve.tv was pretty cheap wasn't it, and did it work?
I think eve do need a distribution center in the U.S - perhaps with the recent White Wolf agreement, this could be organised? i'd imagine its the p&p that puts alot of people off.
Although I do love the glossy style - a monthly paper version would maybe interest me more (in the style of new scientist) - Could always keep the glossy version as a quarterly issue and focus the paper version on more in-game news and current/recent ccp action - this would of course require the in-game big cheeses to be more involved, making it an Eve-newspaper.
Edit:// Are ccp running the magazine for profit? or aiming for break-even out of kindness for the fans ;)
Economic Terms: PED = Price Elascity of Demand XED = Cross Elascity of Demand

i'm currently thinking about buying this mag, but i can't get past the price. i was worried about the size of the issue, and about content / ad ratio.
15 bucks for a hint guide isn't bad, but usually you are only paying once (unless an expac is released). i bought all the guides for the baldur's gate series, and the elder scrolls series, mainly because they were so informative, and (for the most part) gigantic.
the fact that its a quarterly mag does make the news awfully out of date, especially when the news relates to a persistant world.
throw us a bone, people! ship an issue with the purchase of a game to entice us! for now, i suppose i'll continue to peruse the sites and forums to get my information...less gloss, but free.

I don't buy it for one reason, its a quartely magazine and its based on an MMO. Which means i will be buying some thing very out of date. I might buy the 6 week one...but to make it not out of date i would have to say it has to be every week and a didgital download. but to make some money out of it it would only be severa pages long meaning less quality... How did it go so wrong. |

I've seriously considered buying a few issues of E-ON before, but never have. One thing I am concerned about is the shipping of the magazine. I'm a tad anal when it comes to my books and magazines, and the thought of such a nice magazine being crammed into my mailbox scares me a little. I think somebody mentioned that these were shipped in a box? Is this correct?

I got a couple of friends that won't play eve no matter how much I insist, but they'll watch the tournaments and read e-on when I bring it with me. Of course, they're not paying for either :p
I find the content very original, and informative, even if it's a little informative at times. The stories are great, the interviews. The map wasn't as great as I expected, but it's just a free gift, like the dvd from fanfest.
I'm always carrying it around with me the first few days until I've read it.
I'd like it to be cheaper, but I'm willing to pay something extra. I wish I had subscribed for EVE-TV too, when I had the chance :(

The problem with EON isn't the cost of the magazine, it's the shipping? Can't they mass ship them to the US and ship them out from Atlanta to get the cost down?
