Among MMO players I'm pretty sure fantasy is more popular. Worldwide among all people in general, I'm not sure.
I personally like both, but I'm more into sci-fi recently, whereas I used to be into fantasy more. Eve has helped to pique my sci-fi interests, and now I'm playing other sci-fi games, reading sci-fi books, (Honor Harrington FTW) etc.

Why you can't have magic in a sci-fi setting is beyond me
That would make for an interesting MMO. A Sci-fi with magic... I really should make a forum RPG about that.
Actually I'm writing a book (if it ever gets finished ) that covers some of these ideas. But as oft quoted about sufficiently advanced technology, there is nothing to say science couldn't explain magic (in the sense it be still magic but at the same time fit into a logical universe).
A state "where the laws of physics just don't apply" (for example)
Stuff like wizards and Harry Potter fantasy-esque magic still follows a set of laws and principles (in paralell or perhaps as a superset of the normal laws we have in the real world). There is always some limiting factor, some maximum level of skill or power or potential, always some rule which dictates that you take a certain path or have only a limited set of options (you can't just "make up" a spell to do what you want, you have to follow a spell worked out by someone before.)
These things ofc. are all there to help the audience. They need to be able to understand some universe fairly easily straight off, then explore through the author and medium some interesting aspect of that universe or the characters therein
To explore the ideas behond how we set ourselves rules and laws etc is far more abstract and probably has a much smaller appeal

Spaceships (especially with Newtonian physics, CCP I'm looking at you)> Fantasy on so many levels.
Your super magic mage **** can chuck lightning at me all he wants. My neutron-based, plasma-encased antimatter charge will cause a proton/antiproton cascade reaction taking out half of WTFLOLRPGWOWLAND with one shot. (anyone familiar with the theories surrounding antimatter and it's reactions will know what I'm talking about[I get bored and look up particle physics for fun, Large Hadron Collider anyone?])

The only real difference I seen between sci-fi and fastasy stuff is that in fantasy the major technology is magic, which people use instead of every day instead of machines. While in sci-fi any sort of ordinary magic is choked to death with a complex answer of equations to solve problems.
A group of protagonist stuck behind a door. Fantasy: wizard uses his powers to open the door, or barbarian is strong enough to lift it. Sci-fi: the door is too thick us puny humans cannot force our way through we have to invert this encrypted linear phase induced fluctuating space age technology panel and reroute all the power supplies in a over glorified door lock in a over complex sequence which will take me about 20 minutes to a week.
Other than that monsters and aliens not too different. Only change is how they travel and how they kill.
I like how pitch black / chronicles of riddic combined a bit of magic and sci fi though.

lol i was watching lotr a while back and when the belrock (giant cave monster thing) part of the movie came up I said to myself, my raven would own that thing. I think my raven would own anything in the fantasy world (dragons, wizards, smigel). Sci-Fi all the way.

Is Shadowrun that much of a niche RPG that no-one is going to mention it in this Sci-Fi/Fantasy discussion. The place had cyberspace and hacking and cybernetic enhancement of humans (and non-humans) and a huge array of weaponry as well as magic and totems and Elves / Trolls / other weirdos tied into a single coherent game environment. Recently it's been turned into a Shooter on many platforms but the original world was awesome. William Gibson wrote a bunch of heavily Sci-Fi based novels with some Psionics (ESP) hinted at through the books. Go read "Neuromancer" and "Mona Lisa Overdrive" for some phenomenal Sci-Fi with magical overtones.

There isn't any reason why Fantasy fiction can't be done on the same scale as Science fiction, and there isn't any reason, for example, that someone like CCP couldn't develop a hardcore serious MMO based in a fantasy universe.

The winner for me has always been space simulation.
However, I also like fantasy, sword and sorcery and such in reading material. The Xanth series by Piers Anthony was one of my faves. Anne McCaffrey and the Dragondrums series and a whole multitude more like them. However, I just can't seem to get the same enthusiasm for the game side of the fantasy genre.

With detailed enough explanations, Sci-Fi and Fantasy tend to merge anyway.
Or rather, Sci-Fi always tries to explain itself, and when fantasy tries to explain itself it starts sounding almost scientific too. -

I like both a very great deal, in books, film, and games. I would never limit myself to choosing between one and the other, even in jest.

Anyone read the Myth series? It did a good job blending the 2 genres and was funny to boot.

I have always loved Shadowrun
But I would have to take spaceships over orcs and elves, but not in a serious way more like its fun only when I'm drinking way.

I've always been a huge fantasy fan. Fantasy novels, DnD, the Final Fantasy series, you name it.
But, I must admit, I love this game. By far and away the most hardcore MMO out there, with a great player base, it's enough to keep me flying through space.

Space.
For some reason I just don't find spells, elves, orcs and LAME as feasible as space flight. Thats why WoW has never appealed to me, its just cack. "I WANNA KAZT MAJIK MIZZLE"
Blowing the ass out of a frigate with Neutron Blasters is clearly much more fun. AND MANLY.
There, I said it.

This is the problem with both genres; No one thinks to just find another way around
