Personally I've always been a huge fantasy nut.
Dragons > everything else
But.. Eve is a really good game on its own merits and that's why I play it. Spaceships are cool too . Although if CCP's new World of Darkness MMO is like Eve but fantasy you can bet I'll be one of the first in the door.

And you know why ?! Because goblins and orcs are much easier to implement into games ! Spaceships require some degree of complexity because ... well, they're not just clubs and armors.

I'll add that technology is the ONLY way you are going to get magic.

What, flying reptiles and green skinned humanoids are advanced technology ? Lol.

Unexplained phenomenons does not equal magic. Well, unless you live in the 13th century.

Is this a Generic MMO v EVE choice? In Which case EVE.
I love Fantasy novels over Space ones (Although WH40k novels are usually good.), movies hard to call. (BTW i think LOTR can be classed as Large scale war...)
One thing i've always wondered is howcome theres many SCI-FI t.v series, but not many Fantasy ones (I cant actually think of one off the top of me noggin.)
edit:// With your descriptions, i'm guessing your trying to get a "I love EVE"/"EVE kicks WoW's ass" post.

No, what I'm trying to point out is the difference between them.
The newer generations are much more exposed to the "lord of the rings" type of 'fantasy', orcs, gnomes and goblins (warcraft3, WoW, countless other games based on the same lore).
Older generations are more into space adventure, spaceships, politics, intrigue, more realistic stuff that will probably happen in the future.
You can't compare them.
One is for grown ups, other is for putting kids to sleep.

The large mass dont like fantasy I think, even though the success of The Lord of the Rings trilogy kind of argues against that...
Ive seen some of Bewitched and it has magic, but its not really fantasy. Also its pretty bad and boring.

Yea. Fantasy makes movies, but leave TV to sci-fi and anime. Please. I hate most of the quasi-fantasy crud they have on TV, at least when they have it (Which is like never)

This is true, but if you think the future will be anything like what modern sci-fi says it will I'd advise you to think again.
108 years ago people thought we'd deliver everything with a world-wide network of pneumatic tubes and the only viable aircraft would be military blimps.
Not saying it won't happen but it'll be so different it may as well be orcs and magic spells for how accurate it will be - I've always thought of sci-fi as being something like fantasy in denial. Doesn't mean I don't appreciate good sci-fi of course though.

See anime and manga is so appealing to me because it seems to flawlessly combine ideas about magic and supernatural with solid science fiction, more often than not in the modern day or near future
Part of that reason is cultural and historical influences, and you don't have to dig very deep into any sci-fi or fantasy fiction to see the ideas of the time reflected in some way. (Arguably, the best stuff avoids this and as such becomes 'timeless'. With anime, once you see beyond the giant robots to the characters, their principles and even the way the scenarios are laid out, presented and carried through, you see them reflect and reinforce things to do with the target (Japanese) audience. Same as something like the TV series 'Heroes' ultimately slips into the whole American superhero formula, and equally something like '28 days later' is clearly aimed at a different audience to 'Resident Evil' f.e).
There's also the whole thing to do with how different pieces of sci-fi and fantasy (within their own genres) work affect each other's content. That some ideas become so obvious and/or ingrained in the mind of both authors and audience, things somehow seem missing without them (giant robots again). That is why we have many of the stereotypes or set ideas about said genres that we do (Just as with a crime thriller it'd be very unusual to not have a crime or a detective or some sort of resolution at the end. And in fact the whole premise of a crime novel before you even open the book is based on this).

Edited by: hall monitor on 06/07/2008 15:48:47 Space faring colonization and possible future wars? Highly probable. Much of Sci-Fi becomes reality. I vote yes.
Fantasy? Not probable and mostly supernaturalistically silly. No vote because it's mostly for little kids and girls still waiting for their knight in shining armor.
