Here's what i do in general.
* Run classic client. * Lots of ram, its never enough. * My alt machine is a core2duo e6600 with 3gbs of ram and a (recently upgraded) ati 3850. Runs perfectly fine. Minimal alt-tab lag. In general, a dual core machine with tons of ram.

I suppose your current PC might even struggle with a single premium client (depending on detail level), and isn't getting any jaw-breaking speeds on a single classic client either. So... two classic or two premium clients ? If two premium clients, what level of detail ? And what would be an acceptable frame rate ?
Basically, what you NEED is a mid-range Dual Core CPU (think 2 GHz cores or thereabouts), any (cheap) motherboard that can handle it (audio onboard but no video onboard would be preferable, at least one PCI-Express slot), a 7xxx Nvidia graphics card (at least 256 video ram, 512 preferred ; don't bother with an 8xxx IMO), but get at least 2 GB of system RAM, even 4 GB won't hurt (make sure the motherboard can handle it). You can reuse your old case, power source, HDD and optical drive if you want to, but a new case and power source (450 W or better) might be a good idea. You should be able to find all of that for around 400 $, maybe 500 $ tops... and should run dual classic clients very smoothly, even two premium clients at a decent framerate.

i run:
intel core quad Q6600
nvidia 8800gts
4x corsair 1gb ddr2 800
Asus P5K SE motherboard
windows vista ultimate 64bit
computer was bought last september so now its probably alot cheaper too.
cost me around 900Ç (i think i made the conversion right :P)
the PC you have atm is good for a alt. id buy a brand new one.... mid range brand new PC are super cheap (atleast where i live) and you can run eve whit premium on it. 2 accounts or more. on my own pc i have managed 7 premium clients... worked ok.. but combat whit more than 2 and it doesnt wanna run anymore :P ---------------------------------- Fighting for Minmatar o7 Yes... this is my main. AMD 4400+ X2, 2GB ram, and a Radeon 3850 runs both lag free. I agree that plenty of ram and decent cpu speed/dual core is the key.

thanks. ya Im running classic and it sometimes lags even with every setting as low as possable (even the hardrive is old). I want to see what this game shows graphicaly with all the bells and whistles. I could use my current computer for my alt no problem.
also I hear bad things about vista vs xp... should I avoid vista?
Thanks all.

I got this in January.
Quad-core 2.4MHZ (6600 model) GTS 88800 4 GB RAM + stuff
Runs 2 clients (+ a few other programs) in premium (window mode, all effects on, shadow/bloom off) with ease. Fps on each would be about 100.

Vista whines are pointless now. in most cases vista is better than XP for HOME use. if you have never hardware it works better whit vista than XP (atleast in my case... i get alot more performace out of my PC whit vista than i did whit xp 64bit)
those that still whine that vista sux... are the ppl who try to run it on PCs like yours (no offence :P)

17" iMac Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, two classic clients. I run missions, mine, whatever floats my boat at the time. Plenty of loading lag when approaching a crowded stargate though.

Ram, 3G of it. 4 or more if using vista. For the classic client, any non-integrated graphic card made since 2006 will do. For the premium client, you will need a better GPU, however. Everything else is nice to have but not necessary for Eve.
I still use a p4, 3G ram it was able to run 3 classic client without problem, 6800 256M too. Upgraded with a 8800 512, it can run 1 premium and two classic, no trouble.
Pay special attention to your Motherboard, too many computers, especially storebought have high-grade peripherals on a low-grade MB.
If you have the money, a WD Raptor Harddisk for the system and games will do lot of good too.
But above all, ram, lots of it.
Hope this help, i cannot recommend you a brand, i always build mine from parts.

My old 2000 machine (a paltry [email protected], with 1 GB RAM and a 9550 Radeon) barely runs EVE classic in missions, but it does run it... and can handle two classic clients docked (barely enough to change skills or trade or somesuch). I've used it extensively until last autumn. My old 2003 machine ([email protected], GeForce 5700) runs EVE premium decently, but only has 512 RAM, so it stutters with two classic clients. I usually had this machine at the office, so I used the older one at home, and I played more at home than at the office. So, now, I have a pathetic E2140 (dual 1.6GHz) with 1 GB RAM and a GeForce 8500 (it's actually not that great), and it runs an EVE Premium client with everything at max at a remotely playable frame rate, and quite good frame rate with everything at minimum... but I prefer to switch to classic when running dual clients, and it certainly does feel it could use a little bit more RAM.
Other than for EVE (or hardware failures due to old age), I never had any reason to upgrade any of the machines... and so far EVE has been the greater factor in hardware spending. Today's computers are way too over-the-top for any reasonable demands... whatever games appear that need a better machine either suck or are not worth the extra cash you'd have to shell out on hardware alone to play them decently - just get a console instead, or play them at minimum everything.

Well, Vista has nothing to offer except some eyecandy compared with XP, and what you call a "mid-range PC" is actually a behemoth of a machine, overkill for anything except "cutting-edge games". I hate spending money on stuff I don't actually need.

I run:
Dell Precision 690 (the 750W model, not the 1KW)
2 x Intel 5160 3.0 GHz Dual Core processor chips (EMT64 processor)
4 x 1GB 667 MHz ECC memory
80 GB SAS disk
EVGA 8800 GT "superclocked" 512 MB vid card
2 x Dell 20" normal aspect LCD screens at 1600x1200 Eve windows are 1280x1024, cascaded
Windows XP Pro 64-bit
In Classic Grahics with the newly-fixed cache set to "off" I can run eight Eve windows for some hours. I don't know yet whether it will sustain nine Eves.
64-bit XP Pro is a breath of fresh air after 32-bit. Not only does Eve run well but all the other software important to me either has 64-bit versions or installs and runs very well as 32-bit.
Next will be to add another 4 GB of mem, and move up to a 1 GB vid card.

WTF do you do, wait 2 years to play games after they're released and go OH hay this neww game runs on mah machine mah machine must be gud!
I just build my own machine for 1000USD with basically the exact specs of his, after dropping the one I'd been using for 4 years. It ran EVE fine on premium and dual ran it perfect on classic.
There are OTHER new games besides eve. I like to play them.

If you're just looking for a computer which is cheap and works, take a look at Dell's refurbished and/or scratched/dented machines, as they are heavily discounted. I got a 2GB dual core w/ a lower end PCIE nVidia card about a year ago for $500 US without a monitor. It runs two instances of EVE classic just fine.

I assembled that computer to run multiple client smoothly :
Intel Quadcore cpu Q6600 (step G0) overclocked to 3,4Ghz + 4 G0 DDRII (PC6400) (134 eur + 60 eur) Graphic card Gainward 8800GT 1Go (200 eur) Gigabyte EP35-DS3R Motherboard (100 eur) windows XP 64bits (bought 45 eur on ebay) Iiyama 24" Prolite E2403 WS 1920x1200 (350 eur)
Total = 890 eur.
With that computer I can run my 6 classic accounts into 6 windows from 1600x900 to 1920x1080 smoothly (50 to 100+ frames/sec) or 4 classic accounts + 1 premium account
each account uses less than 7% cpu
The memory on the graphic board is the most important parameter, when it's full the frame rate in EVE slows down enormously. be careful that GX2 cards with 1Go ram offers only 512Mo per gpu.
I am very happy of that computer because it was not expansive to make and it serves its purpose very well

That probably wont cut it with what you have.
Mine barely does it, and this is with classic not premium graphics:
P4 3.2ghz (old style one, single core) 2.5gb RAM 256mb 1600 ATI card
My RAM is fine, it's the processor and video card that's the problem.

my PC is not Mid range.
mid range is like Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 2GB DDR2 Nvidia 8600GT
or some sorts
that runs eve + vista whit all the candy really easy.. i have a PC like that at work. i have run 2 accs on premium + all the work related programs (remo desk, monitoring tools etc) at the same time whit no problems
PC like that should cost 450Ç or less(all depends where you buy it from.. i get stuff alot more cheaper as i buy stuff from the supplyers directly..).
some ATI and AMD dual core configs are becoming popular again as they are catching up whit Nvidia/Intel now. so its worth to look at those as they are cheaper and the performance is better or same. ---------------------------------- Fighting for Minmatar o7 Yes... this is my main.
