Of course, don't expect to live that long with just that... actually, expect to get popped almost as soon as you start combat. The more support skills (gunnery, drones, engineering, electronics and navigation) you have and the higher these above are, the better.

I remember a 1v1 with a guy who had 2 years on me in SP wise.. he plated his thorax and i had resists on mine (mainly setup to gank/tank...ish) but he had ECM drones and i had HH II's ..i won :). he also had light neutron blaster II's i had heavy neutron blaster II's.
Plate setup sucks.

To "properly" fly a Gankerax (as opposed to the less-demanding Platerax, and as opposed to "being able to" fly a Gankerax), you'd want:
DRONES SKILLS Combat drone operation IV Drone durability IV Drone interfacing IV Drone navigation IV Drone sharpshooting IV Drones V Electronic warfare drone interfacing IV Gallente drone specialization IV Minmatar drone specialization IV Scout drone operation V
ELECTRONICS SKILLS Electronic warfare IV Electronics IV Long range targeting IV Propulsion jamming IV Signature analysis IV
ENGINEERING SKILLS Energy grid upgrades IV Energy management V Energy systems operation IV Engineering V
GUNNERY SKILLS Advanced Weapon Upgrades IV Controlled Bursts IV Gunnery V Medium hybrid turret V Medium blaster specialization IV Motion prediction IV Rapid firing IV Sharpshooter IV Surgical strike IV Trajectory analysis IV Weapon upgrades V
MECHANIC SKILLS Hull upgrades IV Mechanic IV Repair systems IV
NAVIGATION SKILLS Acceleration control IV Afterburner IV Evasive maneuvering IV High speed maneuvering IV Navigation IV Warp drive operation IV
SCIENCE SKILLS Cybernetics IV Thermodynamics IV Science IV
SPACESHIP COMMAND Gallente cruiser IV Spaceship command IV
These skills allow the ability to fly a fast, tough Thorax with guns and other appropriate modules at T2, deploying T2 scout and ECM drones to good effect, using a nice set of implants. I daresay few Thorax pilots actually have this skillset; by the time they have the support skills, they're already pushing themselves into some other ship class.

Effective as in "my HAC outdamages your BS"? Sorry but t1 fit lowskill BS are just cannon fodder. Better stick with BC+t2 guns than BS+t1 guns.
Contrary to popular belief you do NOT have to fit T2 guns to pvp in a BS. You will lose a maximum of 8% dmg (but more likely 2-4%) and since you will only use factional ammo, that's about the only shortcoming. Considering the time it takes to train to T2 Blasters or Rails, you can spend that time and SP on far more critical aspects of skills, like being able to utilize a T2 Damage Control. When you have the skills to fit your preferred setup in T2 mods, then you can start training for those T2 guns.

Originally by: Tarminic By you people's definition, it takes a year of training to properly fly a T1 frigate.
Yes. It does.
That does not however mean that low SP characters should not be flying them in the mean time. If you want into PvP in a frigate, you can fly a tackler on low skills and let's face it you're not going to kill much in a frigate these days anyway. You can make some reasonably impressive low SP PvP cruisers, picking on the 'Rax in this situation is kinda scewing the viewpoint as they are quite skill intensive to fly anyway. Low SP BS are another matter. The ability to use Null/Barrage/Scorch really changes things at BS level and if you're up against guys in BS who can use that ammo you'll be at a notable disadvantage. That's not to say you shouldn't fly BS with T1/named guns, just that you need to be aware of the problems.
Back to your point though, I remember about the time I'd finished training for T2 big guns and I was finally comfortable flying BS into fleet PvP, for the first time in ages, on a whim, I fitted up an Incursus for actual combat rather than as a glorified shuttle. My God it was awesome compared to what I remembered and that's what having all the support skills to 4 or 5 does for you. Ships you remember as being kinda mediocre are suddenly a completely different experience.
So yes it takes a year to be able to fly a frigate properly. Fly them anyway, and cruisers, and BS. As long as you know what you're getting yourself into then don't let others tell you what to fly.

The last time I looked Megathrons cost 83 milion or if you build it yourself even less. The payout of a fully insured Megathron is 105 million. I knows this cause I just lost one. Even with my great battleship, gunnery, dronery and other support skills.
So I say to the OP if you can fly it, fit big guns, a large armour rep and a MWD then go for it. The only way to learn how to fly a ship is to actually fly it and with the death penaly so low just now the best time to learn is just now.

First off, the guy who said this... You're funny, I actually had a good laugh at this. You just forgot Mechanic V, Weapon upgrades V, Spaceship Command V, Engineering V, and Assault Ships IV. That's not to mention if your going to fly an Ishtar you had better have some really good drone skills and Heavy Assault Ships to IV at the very least. That also Doesn't include the Hull Upgrades skills so you can fit a half way good tank, or the Navigation skills so you can use a MWD.
The best suggestion I can make is find you some friends or join EvE University for Pew Pew fun. Then you fit up an INEXPENSIVE frigate or cruiser and go have fun. EvE Uni will actually teach you skills you need in everyday EvE, everything from how to move as a fleet to how to make ISK by buying and selling things on the market.
They are usually under a war dec and if not usually take people into low sec to give them a taste of pew pew. So, getting in can be a timing thing, as they don't usually accept members while at war.
Trust what most of the people here are saying, you don't want to just hop in a Mega and go try to pew pew or as some people know it PvP. It will get very expensive very fast as you loose ship after ship. You don't need a ton of skills if your smart, but you need experience and smarts to survive. It is a lot cheaper to toss frigates and cruisers away while learning skills, both PvP tactics and actual skills.
As some would say, you need to learn to crawl before you can walk. You would be suprised at the amount of pirate corps or 0.0 alliances that will take you just as long as you can fly a frigate and have tackling skills.

only managed to see one of those in a 1v1 situation, and my harbinger just ripped it apart. he barely got into my armor.
Of course it would lose to a tier 2 BC. But on the other hand, I once took on a small T1 gatecamp (frigates, cruisers) in one, and of course died, but took out one of their cruisers first. YMMV. -

I would at least make sure you got t2 tank before using mega in pvp. But what some people here tell is just plain ridiculous. If you go solo in thron imo t2 heavies are pointless, since you will be using hammers/warriors/ecm drones anyway. And funny people telling you need long range targetting to lvl 4 to fly a gank thorax...

He said a megathron, not a tmepest.
you want all gunnery skills at 4/5 - caldari navy antimatter means GOOD named guns can do decent dps. Getting about 1mil in drone skills is a must, drone interfacing 4 and heavy drone op 4 for good damage from them. Hull upgrades 5 is a must however.
Most of these will give you a decent megathron setup - vet's in a mega can do sick things, but if you want a 5-6 month solution then go with the above. -------

Originally by: Ragnar Dannaskjold I gave up on mining shortly after getting a procurer (lawl, skipped cruisers) because I realized:
1. Mining is incredibly boring 2. It would take months to be able to fly a coveter/hulk
So I rerolled Gallente so I could pirate/pvp/actually enjoy the game.
Evemon is showing that it would take 10ish days to actually be able to get in a thron, but what skills would I need to be able to fit/fly a blasterthron well?
I started flying a Mega as soon as i got Large Hybrid Turret 4 (modals), with some success... but i already had all gunnery support @ 5, T2 armor tank and maxed cap management skills. It got really nice when i got the T2 large guns, and now i'm working on T2 Heavy Drones.
My navigation skills still suck... and you don't need t2 web, just use the best named.
So... i'd recommend you at least get cap skills @ 4, t2 armor tank (mech / hull up 5 / rep 4 / compensations 3) and at least 3 million SP in gunnery and 1 million in drones.
Ah, and Gallente BS 3 is ok, 4 is better, 5 only if you're going to get to caps/marauders, tbh...
And Thermodynamics, being able to overload modules make a HUGE difference too...

Some of you may know my feelings about players who want to rush into a battleship with low skills. That is good-more salvage to go around because if you pvp in one you will get owned-20 million skill points to fly a battlship with skills approaching good-anything less & you are going to have a hard time.
Lets look at your Hulk-it will probably take you 3 months of skilling up-particulary if you want to use deep core strip mining. I fly a hulk so I know this. Lets look at a Dominix-I've been training this for 9 months & i'm not even near where I want to be-I have nearly 5 million skill points in Drones alone for the Dominix & that is still not enough training. Don't rush your battleship training, chill & enjoy the ride because sometimes it is going to get rough & you need to be ready or you will be a pod combatant. Have fun.

T1 mega can do for everyday piracy , as damage dealers to kill mission runners or intercept juicy ships at gates. T2 tank is a priority if you want to use it in combat , you better train gunnery and armor skills a good bit. Then AWU and T2 guns.
At first , use a rax as your main hunting ship while you get your skills up , and mega as a dedicated damage dealer when you find a tanky target (drake , BS) but watch local threats. Once you have more isk , use a full T2 mega as your main ship.

It all depends. If you're using torps/pulse lasers/autocannons, then by not having t2 you lose out on your ability to deal damage at range (javelins/scorch/barrage). Matar pilots aren't saying train t2 for the 8% damage boost so much as they're saying train it so you can use barrage. The same applies for the others. Although some forms of t2 ammo are all but useless, others are practically a necessity. Not to mention it's more than 8% damage bonus. Assuming you're at large energy turret 4, going to t2 gives 8% rof from spec and 5% damage from LET 5. And if you already have large turrets to 5, you can just train t2 guns easily enough. But at least imho, the main advantage for at least a lot of the guns is the ability to use t2 ammo.
