Many people say "don't pay ransom" or "you are stupid if you pay, pirates will kill you anyway". In some cases it might be true, some noob pirates might screw you but IMO pirates are generally probably more honest than most carebears. Not that I get ransomed or caughty by pirates that often, in 3 years I had been ransomed 3 times, 2 times the ransom were honoured and the third time I said screw it, kill me (asked to much in ransom for a myrmidon and had problems even breaking my tank until they got an extra ship so I took my chance).
A pirate corp which is honest is BL3H (United something). They caught me in Crielere in a freighter (lol that must be a pirates wet dream coming true). I paid them 700 mill in ransom + 100 mill to escort me to Doden, which they did. I probably paid a bit to much (cargo was worth maybe 500-600 mill depending how you count), however freighter was not insured so I would have lost a bit more (not to mention the time having to get a new freighter etc). And pirates need to make a living too 
So for me it was a business deal and fortunately I made the correct judgement that BL3H could be trusted. Cool guys. If they ransom you, you can trust them. Not that I will not kill them if I am on my pvp chars though  .
Of course if they had not honoured the ransom the contents of this post would have been a lot different.
So why was I in low sec with a freighter? That I wonder myself lol. I travelled from Jita going to Heimatar and auto pilot screwed up. I lost connection and logged back in and somehow autopilot got screwed up and choosed shortest instead of safe path (which was my setting).
I was just checking were I was and to my surprise I saw myself being attacked and first thought I was being suicide ganked until I saw I was in low-sec. Not again, I said to myself, because this is the third time this happens.
First time I was transporting a data interface (when they were worth 400+ mill) and some other stuff. Was in a Raven to be safe from suicide ganking while travelling AFK from Rens to Jita. Turned on computer and was surprised to see a bunch of red blinking guys. Why were they in high-sec until I saw I was in Rancor , noticed to late.
Second time it happened I was in a freighter and noticed just before jumping into Rancor. Survived that though. After that I made sure that I ALWAYS check AP route.
However, today the third time it happened. Was going from Jita to Rens. I was watching TV and had to disconnect because I was stuck in Jita but forgot to check AP route. Damn, I have been checking and double checking AP routes for months and this time I forgot. 800 mill mistake 
Think I know what is causing this BUG. If you disconnect and then login another character which has autopilot set to shortest path and after that login your char with autopilot route set, you will loose your current autopilot setting (actually if you look at AP settings neither shortest or safest route is choosed, but it looks like it default to shortest). You are free to send me some ISK for that advice .
