Many people say "don't pay ransom" or "you are stupid if you pay, pirates will kill you anyway". In some cases it might be true, some noob pirates might screw you but IMO pirates are generally probably more honest than most carebears. Not that I get ransomed or caughty by pirates that often, in 3 years I had been ransomed 3 times, 2 times the ransom were honoured and the third time I said screw it, kill me (asked to much in ransom for a myrmidon and had problems even breaking my tank until they got an extra ship so I took my chance).
A pirate corp which is honest is BL3H (United something). They caught me in Crielere in a freighter (lol that must be a pirates wet dream coming true). I paid them 700 mill in ransom + 100 mill to escort me to Doden, which they did. I probably paid a bit to much (cargo was worth maybe 500-600 mill depending how you count), however freighter was not insured so I would have lost a bit more (not to mention the time having to get a new freighter etc). And pirates need to make a living too 
So for me it was a business deal and fortunately I made the correct judgement that BL3H could be trusted. Cool guys. If they ransom you, you can trust them. Not that I will not kill them if I am on my pvp chars though  .
Of course if they had not honoured the ransom the contents of this post would have been a lot different.
So why was I in low sec with a freighter? That I wonder myself lol. I travelled from Jita going to Heimatar and auto pilot screwed up. I lost connection and logged back in and somehow autopilot got screwed up and choosed shortest instead of safe path (which was my setting).
I was just checking were I was and to my surprise I saw myself being attacked and first thought I was being suicide ganked until I saw I was in low-sec. Not again, I said to myself, because this is the third time this happens.
First time I was transporting a data interface (when they were worth 400+ mill) and some other stuff. Was in a Raven to be safe from suicide ganking while travelling AFK from Rens to Jita. Turned on computer and was surprised to see a bunch of red blinking guys. Why were they in high-sec until I saw I was in Rancor , noticed to late.
Second time it happened I was in a freighter and noticed just before jumping into Rancor. Survived that though. After that I made sure that I ALWAYS check AP route.
However, today the third time it happened. Was going from Jita to Rens. I was watching TV and had to disconnect because I was stuck in Jita but forgot to check AP route. Damn, I have been checking and double checking AP routes for months and this time I forgot. 800 mill mistake 
Think I know what is causing this BUG. If you disconnect and then login another character which has autopilot set to shortest path and after that login your char with autopilot route set, you will loose your current autopilot setting (actually if you look at AP settings neither shortest or safest route is choosed, but it looks like it default to shortest). You are free to send me some ISK for that advice .

I think United is a pretty cool guy. eh makes alt posts to make it seem like they aren't the shittest pirate corp ever and doesn't afraid of anything

Thanks for the kind words Drozza, we had a lot of fun ransoming you, and you are right, it was (one) of our wet(test) dreams come true. guess we where lucky you didn't stay AFK too long, like the freighter we caught on saturday.
And before anybody asks, no we didn't ask Drozza to post this topic, i came to work this morning, browsing C&P to find this "endorsement".
to Cairo Dog: Please don't be a soor looser, we are good at what we do best (gate camp ), even you have to conceed that.
to MC Purge: who are you again? FYI, The United is a corp, not a guy.

Where would us Pirate 'scum' be if we didn't honour ransoms? Poorer most likely as we make a lot of ISK from people paying us to stay alive. If it got out that Pirates in Crielere or wherever didn't honour the ransoms less people would pay us. As much as I like big explosions, I'd rather have the ISK.

Hai, i have seen the united dishonour ransoms, blow raspberries in local and generally behave quite awfully (for shame)
Do not trust them especially revilot as he is a meanie who likes dangle puppies by thier nadjers.

Paying pirates ransom is giving to the problem....flying a freighter afk is not ever good and if you have one you should know what systems not to go through(DUH).So now a pirate corp is 800 mil richer from one person,thanks.

I agree pirates should NEVER be paid...NEVE.....oh wait....No I mean yes by all means pay the ransom, don't lose your ship. You will never get over it. It will haunt you always...and well pirates are people too, just trying to earn a living.....tough times to be sure....ya know.....

I can't really say whether the united honour ransoms or not, but the few times I have been on vent with any of them they all seemed very drunk/high. Just hope they don't have their finger on the trigger, anything could happen

BL3H is probably one of the best and one of the few "true" pirate corps left in the game. If they demand a ransom, and the guy is re-tardedly slow and pays them just as he gets blown up, they give it back.
It's bad for business if ransoms arn't honored, no pirate would make any money then.
They honor every ransom, mainly because they're a bunch of money hungry greed-bears.

I'm not a pirate at the moment (although I'm sure I'll get back to it sooner or later), and I never really did it for the money. However, a lot of pirates (especially the younger ones) do need to make at least a small profit if they're going to do it full time. Ransoming a ship is almost always more profitable than blowing it up and rooting through the wreckage, and the only time it's not profitable is when the pirate asks for too little. It's almost always a smaller financial blow to pay a bounty than it is to lose your ship, and the only time THAT isn't true is when the pirate demands too much. Pirates who ask too much rare get what they ask for, and tend to adjust their asking price accordingly.
TL;DR: If the bounty is less than what you'd lose otherwise, pay it. Also, pirates who don't honor bounties are either stupid or don't need the money.

My experience of BL3H is completely the opposite. I was in their silly corp, they sit all day camping the same system and have been doing for months and months. I flew around the surrounding areas and nobody would fight me, even when they had 4 or 5 people. When I asked why, they said BL3H always have people ready to gank nearby. So I asked for a 1v1 and they laughed, turns out they have had numerous 1v1's dishonoured by BL3H. When I brought this up in BL3H I was told to stfu and then kicked the next day without time to get my stuff out and they continually tried ganking me. Worst corp ever imho
