From what I gather, Mining crystals get used up or burn out over time. But for the life of me I can't figure out how to tell how much time I have left on a crystal.
Is there a way to tell how much longer a crystal has got left before it goes poof?
Thanks in advance. |

I remember seeing something about that posted once, tho since i never used em i wasn't really paying attention. IIRC someone worked out an average 26 hours of total use, but i dunno if that was T1 or T2 or if im just way off base and thinking of something else, that figure is jus stuck in my head.

On average, 2000 cycle starts for T2 and 4000 cycle starts for T1, IIRC.
Can vary from 40 to almost forever (just with a very, very, very small chance of that happening).

If you hover your mouse above the laser-icon, you the pop-up will show which fraction has been used. It starts at 0.00 and goes to 0.99, and at 1.00 it goes poof. As far as I can see, the damage to the crystal is chance-based. My 3 crystals never finish at the same time, although they mine almost the same time. [None] |

0.25% damage at 0.1% chance for T1 and 0.2% chance for T2 apparently... or somesuch.

For what it's worth, there is a typo when you do a "show info" on the crystals. The volatility for the T2 crystals is not "0.2%", but rather "20%". This means that every cycle, there is a 20% chance that your T2 crystal will be damaged by 0.025 HP. Since the crystal can take 1.0 HP total damage, your crystal can be damaged 40 times before it becomes useless.
As for T1 crystals, I've never used them. In theory, they have a 10% chance to be damaged for 0.025 HP, which means that while they can only be damaged 40 times like the T2 crystals, they should last at least twice as long.
This doesn't sound like a lot, but your T2 crystals will normally last around 10 hours of constant mining.
I always keep at least three replacement crystals in my hold. Nothing sucks more than having a crystal pop when you don't have a replacement! I've been very unlucky and had crystals pop after only two hours. I've also had some last several six hour sessions.

I don't think T1 crystals breaks. AFAIK mine wasn't even damaged after 60 hours of use. But I could be wrong tho, damage could be chance based and I'm just lucky.

We're taling MINING crystals, not Amarr lasers. T1 weapon laser crystals never break (unless you use them in POS turrets).

I like the fact that when a crystal pops, if you have a replacement in the cargohold, it will automatically be inserted into the mining laser.
Thanks for the "chance-based" damage info. Couldn't understand why same crystals had seemingly different rates of decay.

Dayum, that's sure as hell longer than t2 frequency crystals. :P
BTW, you can change or 'reload' crystals, just like every other 'mod add-on'. The only thing you can't do in space is actually fit mods without POS assistance. :D
