So we all know that EVE employees play EVE, to make it better, right?
And we all know that you have faith in your own game, that's why CSM member names and characters are public, correct?
So you definitely wouldn't be doing anything shady in your own game that would cause you to abuse your powers for your in-game characters, now would you? I'm sure you're totally honest in a fair and balanced way. That's why you should have no problem with this request.
One could argue that you keep your characters a secret so people don't beg you to abuse your powers or come after you in game. But you know that you don't ever do that right? A game that is good enough for us should be good enough for you, shouldn't it? So this shouldn't be an issue. After all, when we know who you are, we'll be able to keep a watchful eye and make sure that you're being truthful and trustworthy. If you are being regular players this should definitely be a good-faith public relations move for you.
It's my opinion that the EVE community has a right to know when it is playing along side a GM/Dev. After all, publicly traded corporations declare their senior officers. These good practices could apply to you as well, wouldn't you say?

There are many reasons why NOT to do this.. but a simple one is that the devs, in fact, just want to be players at a point and they do not want the extra attention it would give them.

this. Can you imagine the harrassment they would get every day when they're trying to play? Big importaint fleet battles and they get like 10 private convos in the middle and constantly lose ships to crap like that? Of course every time you die someone will post about being on the killmail of one of the devs, or say something about it. _______________

But the fact of the matter is that they are Devs, so they have to be more accountable for this potentially unfair advantage. Think of it as how corporation employees handle stock buys to prevent insider trading.

And how would this differ from other famous players in the game such as well-known pirates, and CSM council members? There's something called auto-reject and CSPA fees. The game is fully equipped to handle this.

If they reveal their characters they will be treated differently to normal players, which will in turn skew the gaming experience they use to evaluate the game. So doing so would be a bad idea from a game design perspective as it'll defeat the purpose of them playing. -------- Ideas for: Mining |

I must be missing something here, how exactly is knowing that a char is a gm/dev/etc going to tell you anything other than that char works for ccp? Should you also get their api keys too so you can monitor them..bah, fail idea.

This is a ridiculous idea. Apart from the fact that they may want to play the game just for fun, they also play it to get to know what the problems are in the game. To do that requires being able to play the game normally, which they would not be able to do if their player characters were revealed. They may as well just play with their dev accounts.
CCP have an internal system for making sure devs behave themselves. If you don't trust them not to cheat, then you have no obligation to play their game.

There's only this little problem of COMPANY POLICY, where it says that if the "regular" gameplay character of a CCP employee is ever exposed as belonging to a CCP employee, that character's name, ID and emploment history has to be "randomized" as soon as that is known.
I bet a lot of CCP employees that still play (yes, a lot have quit due to draconic measures following the T2 scandal) would love to be able to tell some regular players they're dev characters - even if they're painfully aware they couldn't do anything to help them, and they WOULD get a lot of requests for help even in spite of their inability to do anything thanks to the IA dept. - but they're not allowed to.

How much more things would you be able to do as a dev on a normal account? (which is what they use for their normal character)
Well in short, nothing more than what a normal player can, ok they will know how certain mechanics works but they still have to abide by the rules of the game.
They also have to abide by a lot of rules on their 'gm' or 'dev' character, maybe even a lot more, just to stop employees from abusing...
I think you are taking this too far, are you so scared someone might actually get an advantage that you wouldn't trust the developers with a character of their own to play the game they made?... I think you should get your head examed.
edit: as an addition, and bonus, do you think it is any different on other mmorpgs? aside from the fact that the companies behind them might fully deny that their developers/game masters play the game? get real

So you're saying we have a broken wardec system that needs attention? What prevents me from doing this to you, or you doing this to me? I think you're using fanboy logic here.
The argument you present will prevent them from playing the game they make. War decs or not their characters will be treated differently, no way around it. The war dec system does have some flaws, however thats not what where i was going.

Why would a CCP employee do that?! You know what would happen if they did? Half of them would be kicked out of their own corporations, the other half would be in corporations charged with dev assesstance and all of them would recieve 100+ evemails a day asking for BPO's and free handouts. CCP cannot reveal their ingame names for very good reasons, this also applies to ISD/Aurora etc, though one good reason is peer pressure to give items etc and constant accusations, say a ccp employee was a member of bob or goonswarm two successful alliances, people might get out the conspiracy theories book (grabs tin foil hat) and start throwing accusations around, or peer pressure to give items under duress and generally make their day hell. i agree that CCP employees and ISD etc should stay hidden for our good and theirs -------------------------------

Forum whorveterans always come back
I wouldn't read too much into it, as I'm currently on that free two weeks thing. There was no reason not to come back for at least that long. -

I smell a L5 high-rank skill that will be ready by December's next free 14 days

Unfortunately I have no more long skills I have any real interest in training. Continually coming back whenever free play time is given out might be an good plan though. If it wasn't for the autolock feature, I could read the forum all the time, and respond to the whines en masse every six months or so. -

I am opposed to that particular flavour of metagaming, I'd rather just quit the game. -

Edited by: Khemul Zula on 12/07/2008 01:17:00 I actually think the OP has a good idea. Just think how much easier explaining everything would be! All we'd have to do is find a dev-alt that is using the game mechanic we want nerfed and a new conspiracy is born!
For instance, I propose that there is a dev-alt in the gallente militia that is going on raids into caldari space, flying nanoships, while at the same time using wardecs to gain extra targets from noob industrialists.

It's a 2003 character and of what I know there was a time when employment histories were truncated due to some issues. That's why there's no starter corp. Ask Chribba, I remember him talking about that.
Fascinating point of trivia that I didn't realize.
Well i can asure u it aint "trivia" in any kind of way, if i remember it right it happened mid 2004. quite alot of my corpmates back in the time got their Employement history erased from that day and on,. all of them played during Beta tho so this could maby be one of ther reasons. :)

Never happen. Would be the BoB/Dev scandal to the 10th power if everyone found out eve's corps were 90% run by dev alts. they are devs 9-5, outside of work they're just regular players with free eve accounts. you wouldn't give customers of your work your personal information, would you? it seems unreasonable to ask the ccp staff to do the same.
