Ive been training a mission runner alt for a torp golem, because everyone says they are just that good. So I snagged a rattlesnake since I have skills to fly that for now. I find most of the BS rats orbit out of my torp range, so I have to AB toward them, but then my drones kill it long before I get even close to torp range. This is VERY SLOW for mission running. Of course, you can rig for range, and gimp your dps or tank; then you wind up with little benefit over a tengu or nighthawk.

Torps are good for certain missions but I personally don't use them for every mission. That said, you're doing it wrong. For one, you need range rigs. For another, you need the ability to use javelin torps for rats that are out of range. They do pretty solid damage on my 2x target painter golem and the javelins hit out to around 60km in practice. |

Yeah you are missing something.
Try fitting a T2 rocket fuel cache partition rig, it will bump the range out a bit, and Javelin torps will extend all that great DPS out to 50-60km or so. Fit an AB or a MWD with a appropriate shield booster, tank and a PWNAGE or 2 and u are ready to rock. I have skilled up very high skills and have actually used all 3 - CNR, Golem and Tengu.
After all of this, I prefer the CNR for most missions.
The Tengu does not suck and I can see people choosing it instead of the CNR. I think it more a matter of preference than whether the Tengiu or the CNR is better for level 4's
The Golem...well.....meh. It doesn't SUCK...but, likt the other thread OP said...you have to do alot of work for something that really isn't better than the CNR.
I have all 3 in the hanger. I dust off the Golem for missions like 'Damsel in Distress' where it does better than the CNR (but not much better). However, if I didn't already own the Golem, I wouldn't make one.
The Tengu works great for some missions. I probably fly it 20% of the time.
Most of the time I still use the gool ol CNR. Great missioning ship. |

Lol, yea the Golem is too overpowered to be fun, and too shortranged to be convenient. It's just a pain. Wild burner chases, and it takes too much time as well. I have a Golem. It's collectiong dust in the garage. Tengu is also overpowered/boring. I have a Tengu too. It's also collecting dust in the garage.
If you don't want to be really sporting, my suggestion is that the venerable Navy Raven is still the best bet. And quite cheap these days. If you want more tank & less dps, there's the Navy Scorpion.
Weird thing is that a cutely fitted Drake + max skills is quite good at missions. The poor veteran's choice.

Just use cruise missles and kill them long before they get into torp range. I have all skills related to the Golem, missles and shields etc, maxed out and have tried both and the torps just suck unless you like to move around alot. I dont. It does get boring and the CNR is faster at killing and like someone said the Golem is the better overall tank but not by much. I dont understand the Tengu because even with max skills you fire alot of heavy missles and it does take longer to do the same missions and most people to speed up the missions use navy missles to kill the rats. Not effective in the cost per hour to me, but that is just my opinion. Good luck on whatever you decide. |

Yea they suck but no matter how many times I take out the torp Golem I go back to the cruise missles. I just do not see the benefit of torps except in a few missions. I have actually started using the Kronos or Navy Mega just to keep from going nuts from mission boredom. |

Golem is a terribly outdated mission platform.
Other ships have climbed up to its potency and then just walked over it in most of the mission running related aspects.
Golem is not worth the SP is requires. CNR is more then equal in performance and more enjoyable to use. Tengu is .. well we all know how nice they are.
Golem is hurt most by its weapon choises ... torpedoes requiring a very stiff and carved to stone fitting to even be mission viable and cruises just being overall terribad in comparison to other weaponsystems.
Not even going to mention the pirate BS line with nightmare and mach ... aka the kings of lvl 4 nowadays. |

Torp Golem was awesome everytime i used it, it doesnt even need to fly much with good skills and rigs. The Damge it puts out is just awesome, i prefere turret ships though. |

Look at the bright side: If you've spent the SP, then you can use the torp skills for flying SBs, use Marauders V for Vargur/Kronos/Paladin, and Caldari BS V for CNR/Rattlesnake/Nightmare. And AWU V is a good skill to have.

If CMs are terribad, they're ultrabad on a Golem, since one defender missile will take out 25% of the Golems volley, compared to 1/6 or 1/7 for Raven/CNR. |

Defenders do 70 HP of damage. Torps have 280 HP. Four torps have 4 * 280 = 1120 HP.
So one defender reduces the stack by 70 / 1120 = 6.25%

Short answer is 'No'. http://eve-search.com/thread/1369392#13
Long answer is "Eh, there is a way." http://eve-search.com/thread/1369392#19
Defenders do not partially damage a torpedo thus causing reduced damage. However, some NPCs get a missile damage modifier, which if at 4+ would enable a defender to kill a torpedo.

Fly a Rokh, 425s with 4 mag stabs.
Since patch they do same DPS as a CNR and wont lose any DPS to Defenders. And have great range.
Freaking easy modo tank on it too.
But no selectable damage. But dont have to manage TPs either. |
