So, hypothetically speaking, if someone started playing this game and decided to try a little piracy and wanted to know what was the best way to learn the ropes would you advise him to:
1) Just go out and solo in lowsec, attack people, get blown up a lot, try to learn from it...
2) Drop cans with T1 junk in newbie zones, attack the people who are dumb enough to loot them...
3) Try to join a pirate/pvp corp and hope he wasn't just getting scammed out of a "membership fee"...
4) Pay a bunch of money to Agony Unleashed in hopes you learn something valuable...
5) Make a dumb post in the forums asking how one goes about learning to be a pirate...
6) Other (please specify).
I'm just curious. It's for a... uh... research paper I'm doing in school. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Flip it, and destroy the can you create. That'll really **** them off. You want 'em mad and irrational.

Avoid that one. GMs display a keen dislike of baiting n00bs in starter areas. Anywhere else works.

Not it isn't, people should be encouraged to get out in low sec space, but never forced to do so.

No joke.
They will get you going with the right mindset.
Last I checked 11 mill total for Basic/Wolfpacks is not "a bunch of money".
Then go find a decent pirate/outlaw corp that will help get you to the next level.
**EDIT**I think if you ask the AU folks nicely they might even help you get the funds together. That may be old info though.

IMO, if you can't be bothered to fly solo, you shouldn't bother with low sec piracy.
Teamwork is great and all, but if you never think for yourself, what kind of PvPer are you? Lalala. |

Hey, it's only a scam if you're an asshat to start with
Most will take you in (some are exclusive) but what our joining requirements say and what we actually recruit are two different things... The big numbers are to scare the un-dedicated peoples away ------------

I'd say spend some time with 1) and after that go for 3). Dunno where you got the "membership fee" part, but if that's the case with some corp, just look for a different corp.
1) is pretty important in my opinion, to see if you actually like the hunt. And it's very satisfyin when you actually do manage to kill something.
Also if you go outlaw, make sure you have an alt that is capable of hauling (it takes minimal skill training). It's not a 100% necessity, but it sure does come in handy.

Option 1 Option 3 Option 7
In my opinion, i would say grab a cheap fitting ship that can deal enough DPS to take out the smaller targets, fast lock time, scramblers and webs required, add NOS and nuetralizers to drain cap and pick and choose your targets. Case the zone for about three days to see whats out there. Be aware of thier buddies. Never underestimate the value of intelligence on the enemy. use the map to show pilots in the past 30 mins in low sec areas. Dead end systems with nobody around may provide a sharp miner or two.The tend to warp/dock as soon as someone enters local since they suffer from paranoia. Recommend ineterceptors to tackle and learn where they like to mine. Alot of pilots use bookmarks to warp in points to mine from not towards the center of the belt. Pre-made bookmarks in a system can save you, and be the death of your enemy, a.k.a. Roid blaster, ETC. good luck and happy hunting. Speed and surpise are an advantage never to be underestimated.

Thanks for all the replies, this was a lot more response than I was expecting. Looks like I'll be going with option 1 for the time being... seems like most pirate corps have sp minimums or would rather have new members who already at least somewhat know what they're doing. The idea of a newbie-friendly pirate corp seems like a bit of an oxymoron.
So last night my alt got trained to propulsion jamming, fitted scram & webber and off I went in my new rifter. Roamed around lowsec looking for fights, some hisec looking for cans to flip, practicing with the scanner, but everything I encountered ran away before I could get in scram range or seemed out of my league. After reading the "new players first encounter" thread though, I think I just need to man up a little.
I also may need to change locale tho. In The Bleak Lands and Heimatar I was finding a lot of lowsec zones with nobody in them. Any tips on better places to hunt?
Also, I saw a lot of ships on the scanner with a "board" option when I right-clicked them. What's up with that? Some of them were somewhat high-end ships, battleships and whatever. Surely people aren't just leaving these floating around in space unattended?
Anyway... to those who've offered to help in one way or another, expect to hear from me. |

At time some of these ships are floating around without an owner. This happens when a pilot parks a ship at a planet and ejects, or hides them in a safe spot hoping it wont be found. Also be weary of the almighty POS. There might be a player owned station there (use overview settings to confirm) so warping in on an abandoned ship may bring you face to face with somebody's station artillery batteries. Be cautious when approaching moons.

Originally by: Moritsu Takana 1) Just go out and solo in lowsec, attack people, get blown up a lot, try to learn from it...
The best option, the one I recommend to people who want into our corp here.
Quote: 2) Drop cans with T1 junk in newbie zones, attack the people who are dumb enough to loot them...
Also a good option; unfortunately, sec status makes this problemmatic over the long run. Just stay out of actual noobie zones, however, to avoid the wrath of the GM's. Can-flipping also belongs in this category.
Quote: 3) Try to join a pirate/pvp corp and hope he wasn't just getting scammed out of a "membership fee"...
Not likely to work out too well. The pirate corps that take in noobs often aren't really prepared to train noobs. On the other hand, one could get lucky.
Quote: 4) Pay a bunch of money to Agony Unleashed in hopes you learn something valuable...
Agony Unleashed and EVE University seem to focus more on the kind of PvP one engages in in 0.0--fleet warfare, bubble camps, etc. This is a minority of the type of PvP pirates typically engage in.
Quote: 5) Make a dumb post in the forums asking how one goes about learning to be a pirate...
This could only lead to one of the other options in short order.
