TBH, that's alot more fire than I imagined NVIDIA's CEO to have... lol. I love how he seems to have delivered a KO to both Intel and MS at the same time..

Shouldn't nVidia be more worried about AMD right now? By my understanding, they just got completely pwned in the graphics card department. __________________________

I'm pretty sure they are worried, AMD caught them by surprise with the 48xx series. But they still have the "performance crown" with the most powerful single GPU graphics solution, to some that is all that matters. To me, bang for my buck matters, which means AMD has a commanding lead.

You've obviously not heard about ATI's 4800 series. They wipe the floor with nVidia in terms of performance vs price. __________________________

Have they also improved the driver situation since AMD took over ATI?
I've also had bad experiences with their driver support in the past, particularly under Linux, and that's the reason why I've gone since with nVidia exclusively. I even remember once having to stick with an older version of X11 for way too many months as ATI couldn't be bothered to update their drivers to work with the newer version.
But if that has changed, I'll be happy to reconsider their cards.

meet the ATI 4870, or "how do I get performance over a GT280, by spending 20% less in a crossfire solution with better performance"

last time I checked, ATI released the source code of their drivers to GPL. It's still not at NV level, but large steps in performance have been made. ---

I wouldn't know about the Linux drivers, but the Windows ones are fine. Not a thing wrong with them. __________________________

I was talking about why nVidia should be worried, not us. The vast majority of people use Windows exclusively. Thus, the market for Linux compatible graphics cards is very small. __________________________

Stop being such fanbois, NVIDIA has been crap in terms of development since 9800. ATIs 4k series are much more priceworthy than the NVISIAS 200 series.
Just look at the performance charts on the reviews from any of the major hardware sites - the performance of 4850 is almost on par with 260 and it costs less than half the price of its "competitor".
4850 x2 is much better than 280 while costing much less too. ---

Edited by: Bhaal on 17/07/2008 10:57:53 I've gotten burned by ATI one too many times. Sorry ATI fanboi's, not interested...
I'll always take computer hardware/drivers that are more reliable over slightly better performance any day...
ATI sucks IMO. I've given them multiple opportunities to prove me wrong, they have failed every time. (except for 9800PRO, their last good card)

Hah just because YOU had a couple of bad cards you write off the entire lot AND THEN use the worst excuse for a reliable chip (9800pro) that died in droves as their one good example? Anyway both Nvidia and ATI have had their fare share of leads and terrible cards (though I think the geforce 4mx will always have place as the worst card). ---------------------------------
Oh noes!

The only one thats dead is the 9800pro (well I did volt mod it lol) TBH if your failure rate is 80% your doing something wrong.
(And yes there have been nvidia cards in there too, being a fanboy for either side is stupid). ---------------------------------

It doesn't matter what you buy, some are good and some are bad. Nvidia have the best track record from my point of view, having experience with several games running (or not running as in my case) on ATI cards. I think I've once had a problem with a Nvidia card (Farcry) but that was the game and not the drivers and was patched within a couple of days of the game release.
So far, I've had 5200, 5600, 6200, 7300 and now a 7600 and not a single hitch with any. I refuse to pay 300+ UKP for a graphic card so I wait till they come down below the 100 mark. When I can get a DX10 compatible card <100 pounds, I'll buy one.
Most of the time, it's Microshaft changing things in DirectX and not telling anyone that causes the video drivers to screw up and require them to be updated. The only times I've ever had BSOD is right after a DX update, can anyone say DX8a?
I love the smacktalk though, it makes you realise that even a CEO has to have a dig at the competition occasionally -- There's a simple difference between kinky and perverted. Kinky is using a feather to get her in the mood. Perverted is using the whole chicken. |

That's one thing I don't do anymore. I buy cards that are 1 generation old, I no longer pay for the newest hardware (except for work computers, as that's not my money). Games are not that important to me anymore... ------------------------------------------------ Current Hobby other than EVE |
