Edited by: Alkanine on 25/05/2004 02:36:48 I already posted this but I am so dedicated to this fact and that it wont be distributed properly where I posted it that I think it needs a place here.
( please dont flame me )
I think this is how a fleet is supposed to be built in a large scale battle (opinion)
1 Titan (because im stupid and a dreamer)
6 battleships (big behemoths towering above the other ships shotting large shots in random directions targeting other battleships in the process)
10 Cruisers (attacking the large battleships and encountering eachother occasionally taking Crak shots at the frigates)
40 frigates (a bunch of annoying little frigs killing eachother and annoying the crap out of battleships and cruisers as they are focusing eachother. The pilots flying these know they probally wont last long but thier purpouse is served by either chipping away at the capital ships or distracting them so that thier allied capital ships get more hits off.)
This is my ideal of a built fleet. The frigates cause damage due to numbers and still cost less than a battleship it just takes people that have the balls to take the job. The cruisers are the mid ship that will engage all 3 types with their own type of firepower. The battleships loom over everything trying to eliminate the other battleships and occasionally cruisers and they may get annoyed with frigates and try to fire at them but theres so many they would get zoinked by the other B ships. The titan just sits there as the flag ship and adds the fear factor as hits just bounce off of it.
I may be stupid but this to me sounds like the coolest engagment I could see happening and would be an awsome battle that should be what eve is. Don't flame just think about what I said for a second and maybe youll see what im talking about
by the way a base priced battleship sales for around 90 mill and a frigate even with a few minor items added to it costs around 300k.
thats 300 frigs per battleship cost wise. Frigs may be weak when theres 1-3 of them but if they are in a mixed fleet and theres 30-40 of them you can bet they will be a very very large threat at the expense of only 9 million - 12 million.
Also since theres a bunch enemies will get confused with targeting the right ships at times and your corp may avoid losing one of your 90 mill battleships over just a few mill worth of frigates and it would be easy to reequip a frigate fraction of pilots in moments. The cheap cost means you will always have the frigates you need to provide that support.

I like the idea. I to had always pictured the big "Fleet Battles" made up of fleets like this.

ok flame time
But seriously, I agree with you completely. Only real disagreement is such a large number of smaller ships...I mean, it would be cool, but lets face it theres basically no way in hell youre gonna have a fight with ~60 pwople on each side. Even if you had the people, the server would probably blow up once ~80 people start shooting each other. What you hinted at, and what too many people overlook, is that BS should not the the end-all be-all uber-ship of the universe. Ideally, it should be able to bring huge amounts of anti-BS/Titan power to bear as well as do significant damage to cruisers, but should have to have cruisers and frigs escorting and supporting it to survive. Otherwise a group of 12 or so frigs could swarm it and peck it away to pieces. Cruisers ought to be the gold standard in combat, able to group up against a lone or poorly supported BS, or individually take on small groups of frigates. In fact, no ship should be able to bring *overwhelming* firepower against another ship class 1v1. Im not saying that a small ship should have equal combat chances with a big ship, just that a big ship shouldnt be able to blow away a smaller ship with one small volley. A lot of my worries about the updates come down to the fact that cruisers can totally nuke frigs with, say, dual assault launchers shooting beefed-up lights, and BS's will be able to totally nuke cruisers with a couple torps (remember, cruisers are *slow* and dodge like drunk elephants, especially when modded with fleet-action equipment like EW).
Something I think would be cool (Ill post more details in a full post, when I refine it) would be to have like spinal-mounted "super-hislots" on certain frigates, cruisers, and BS's with zero tracking outside the ships own agility, but packs a hell of a lot of firepower relative to the ships other gun choices. Good for taking on big stuff, i.e. BS/Titan/Station. Making truly unguided missles would be cool too, but again only if enough slow stuff like bases and Titans were around to make it worthwhile.

That engagment will never be fought. Whoever is in-system to start with will win, because 40 frigs trying to jump into an already overcrowded system will be a shooting gallery as they uncloak.
And on the off chance it does get off, the lag will be so bad that you yearn for the sweet embrace of podding. -------------------------------------------- CONCORD: Kneecapping Pilots for Misdemeanors Since 2003 |

I have to say I agree with the last couple of posts. I am a noobie. Last night I had my first attempt at group combat leading a team of 6 ruptures hunting rats in 0.2. There wasnt alot to shoot, but thats another matter.
The main thing I noticed was the huge amount of lag as just this small number of ships warped into belts and started to move about. If there were any PVP players waiting on the other side we would have been toast.

you can get an entire fleet into a system in under 30 seconds and uncloak in the exact same instant. no problem :D - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - In a future where freedom is outlawed, outlaws will become heros |

was sitting in a nice 100+ fleet battle couple o months ago running fraps, didnt drop below 30fps once =] Lag was about 1-3 seconds - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - In a future where freedom is outlawed, outlaws will become heros |

such a battle would be really great.
specially frigs like the stiletto can hamper battleships to death. 4 med slots make for battleships that are unable to move/warp......and maybe even unable to shoot.........
and if not an EF, the caldari EW frig has 4 med slots as well :)
frigates are far from dead, they can tackle anything, at less that 10% the price.
All of above post was formulated wth 100% honesty and 100% sarcasm. Now i only need to get drunk
The 3rd turret is the Malediction is missing. Plz make as much noise as possible so that CCP gets us a remedy for that, possibly before X-Mas this year. |
